River View Observer reviews Laico’s Restaurant one of Hudson County’s favorite and Best Italian Restaurants

Thirty-eight years ago, Louis and Felice Laico opened a neighborhood restaurant on Terhune Ave in Jersey City, where families shared a huge pizza pie, soda came in a pitcher and beer flowed from the tap. A humble family eatery serving delicious Italian cuisine to neighborhood regulars, professors at the local colleges and old-timers who shared colorful stories of Jersey City back in the day.
 Although Louis and Felice have since passed on, their son Louis Laico, Jr, who worked side-by-side with his mom and dad, took over the restaurant, keeping that warm, ‘welcome-to-the-family’ ambience that invites you in as soon as you enter the door. Laico family members wait tables and bartend – Louis’s brother-in-law Jimmy Wolowitz is bar manager and Louis’ wife Gloria sometimes fills in when they need a hostess.

 Film Producer PJ Leonard Rolls out Red Carpet for Little Curly Top at NYC Premier of “The Fallen Faithful”

 Film producer PJ Leonard grew up in Jersey City at a time when mothers taught sons to do the right thing with a smack in the back of the head. He’s one of those tough-talking types with the heart of a marshmallow, like when Bogart says bye-bye to Bergman in “Casablanca.” Bogey, too, had to do the right thing and maybe his mama cracked him good because he ended up sacrificing his only crack at freedom for the woman he loved.
 “The Fallen Faithful” is Leonard’s second crack at filmmaking as Executive Producer doing what producers do best – making a movie from script-reading to film screening. As Executive Producer of Other Side of the River Productions Leonard raises money, puts creative teams together, hires actors, negotiates contracts and scouts locations – the bim, bam, boom of movie-making. It’s also his job to get his new film seen, which is exactly what Leonard put in place for Monday, October 25th at the Director’s Guild Theater in New York City where “The Fallen Faithful” makes it’s NYC premiere. It promises to be a glitzy night with the film’s stars Sonny Marinelli and Obba Babatunde attending and one special name on the guest list that isn’t in the credits.Â
 Meghan “Maggie” Elizabeth Russo, a curly-topped two year-old from Staten Island was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare form of cancer that forms in the eye. Currently in treatment at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, little Meghan has a tough road ahead as she prepares for a bone-marrow transplant and a series of chemo. Her dad, Mike is a NYC Firefighter and mom, Mary Beth, left her full-time job to care for Maggie, her older brother Michael and baby sister Mary Kate. Keeping the family healthy and happy are Mike and Mary Beth’s number one priority, and according to Leonard, “they look like the happiest people in the world, always doing things together,” but they can use a helping hand paying for necessities like Pampers and babysitters. That’s where Leonard plays a part.

 Dover Business College Instructor Carlos Sanchez (right) receives the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal from Deputy Director, Navy Nurse Corps, Reserve Component, Rear Admiral Cynthia Dullea, for his support of the victims of the January earthquake in Haiti. Mr. Sanchez collected medical surplus from Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen, NJ, where he works as a Senior Surgical Technologist, and donated the supplies to missions orchestrated by the Guardians of Healing and Haitian-American Charitable Alliance organizations. Mr. Sanchez, a resident of Secaucus, NJ, is a 17-year veteran of the US Navy Reserves.
Across from Jersey City’s City Hall a little Octoberfest Om-pa -pa got underway on Friday October 8th, when the trendy restaurant Bar Majestic held its 5th Annual  Octoberfest Celebration. On hand for the festivities was master of ceremonies Real Estate Developer and partner of Bar Majestic; Paul Silverman, a few members of the Jersey City Council, The Octoberfest Girls and many people enjoying the wonderful food, music,  beer and other libations.

Park Will Be Built For Use By Residents And Community

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – CANCOlofts, an industrial-to-residential condominium loft building in Jersey City, celebrated the groundbreaking on Sept. 10 for CANCOpark, a public park that is being constructed across the street from CANCOlofts, at 50 Dey Street.
 CANCOpark, which will offer 15,000 square feet of green space, landscaping, seating and a walking path, is expected to be complete by the end of October. The park will be open for the enjoyment of CANCOlofts residents as well as residents of the neighborhood, contributing to the already appealing lifestyle of the unique property, formerly the American Can Co.

 Canoeing, fishing, swimming, splashing the grown ups, receiving holiday and birthday presents – these are normal joys that most children experience. Unfortunately, for many children who enter Youth Counseling Services (YCS) for the first time, these things are anything but normal.
 For them, normal means, being abused: sexually, physically, mentally and verbally. For some, normal means spending time in jail, just like Mom and Dad. Normal means selling drugs, just like Mom and Dad. Normal means, stealing, just like Mom and Dad. Normal means being neglected and abandoned, year after year, time after time.

Meghan Elizabeth Russo (Maggie) came into the world on January 10, 2008, a happy and healthy baby girl born to proud parents Mike and Mary Beth, a NYC firefighter and a teacher turned stay at home mom. Her best friend and hero is her big brother Michael, 13 months her senior, and she is the proud big sister of her baby sister, Mary Kate. Meghan is a bubbly, vivacious bundle of energy a…nd Mommy and Daddy’s beautiful Princess.
In late October 2009, Meghan’s parents noticed that her left eye was reflecting strangely in the light.
During a trip to the pediatrician’s office, Mike and Mary Beth asked the doctor to examine her eye. Moments later, her doctor was setting up an emergency trip to the ophthalmologist’s office. Later that evening, Meghan was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare form of cancer.
Six days later, Meghan and her parents went to see Dr. David Abramson at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. After an examination under anesthesia, Dr. Abramson confirmed that she had retinoblastoma. He said that the tumor was covering over 60% of her eye, that the retina was severed and she had no vision, and that her safest option was an enucleation (removal of the eye). Dr. Abramson did offer an alternative treatment called chemo-reduction, but he felt that it was not in Meghan’s best interest. With the knowledge that Meghan would never regain sight in her left eye, and the fear that the cancer could spread toward her other eye, her nervous system or her brain, Meghan’s parents agreed to the surgery.
On Monday, November 9, 2009, Meghan had an enucleation of the left eye. She was home that night. By the next morning, if it weren’t for the tell-tale bandage, you would not know that she was sick.
December marked the beginning of her visits to the occularist, who began to fit her for a prosthetic eye. She also continued to make regular trips to Dr. Abramson to make sure the cancer had not returned.
While on vacation in the Poconos for President’s Week, Meghan began to look like she was getting a black eye. Her prostheses did not fit right, nor did it stay in very well. When the family returned to New York, they went to visit the occularist. A new prostheses was given, as well as the assurance that all was well. However as the week progressed, Meghan’s upper and lower eye lids continued to swell. By the following weekend, the prostheses would no longer stay in.
On Tuesday March 2, 2010, Meghan returned to Dr. Abramson, where her family was told the cancer had returned. The next two weeks were filled with trips to Memorial Sloan-Kettering, where her team of doctors tried to figure out if the cancer had spread outside her eye socket. Finally, tests confirmed that the cancer had also spread to her bone marrow.
The chemotherapy has done quite a number on Maggie’s immune system, and she has been battling two tenacious viruses over the past five months. At one point, she was down to 20 lbs (she was 36 when she began in March). She is now given vitamins and lipids through her IV each night, and her weight has slowly climbed back up to 30 lbs.
Meghan is currently receiving chemotherapy treatments at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and will soon be admitted for her bone marrow transplant. Her doctors are hopeful that the chemotherapy will destroy the cancer, but she has a rough road ahead.

River View Observer Festival Pick for Saturday, September 25th -“A wonderful Fun day out with the family and friends.”Â
The Newport Neighborhood Association (“NNA”) is excited to be hosting its fourth annual International Cultural Festival on Saturday, September 25th from noon to 7:00 pm on Town Square Place, the old Pavonia Avenue, in Jersey City’s downtown Newport community. This location is just outside the Newport/Pavonia PATH station in Newport, across the street from the eastern entrance to the Newport Mall. The NNA has planned an even bigger event than last year’s Festival which drew roughly 2,500 to Newport as this year’s event will have something for all ages, many cultures, and something new, including showcasing a bike show by Grove Street Bicycles, several new performers and legos for kids.
