Hackensack Meridian Palisades Medical Center Turns Pink to Combat Rising Breast Cancer Rates in Young Women

Local event highlights critical 99% survival rate for early detection amid alarming rise of diagnoses in women under 50.

Thursday, October 1, 2026 | 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM Palisades Medical Center, 7600 River Rd, North Bergen, NJ 07047

Flag raising outside main entrance at 10AM

This October, pink is more than just a color—it’s an urgent call to action right here at home. While breast cancer death rates have plummeted by 44% since 1989, diagnoses are steadily rising by about 1% every year—with the fastest increases seen in women under 50.

Because early detection is the ultimate cure—boasting a greater than 99% survival rate when caught at a localized stage—Palisades Medical Center is kicking off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with an interactive, highly visual “Pink Out” event. Medical experts, patients, and survivors will be on-site to urge local women to take advantage of new life-saving technologies, particularly in light of recent national guidelines urging women to begin screenings at age 40.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Read About Two Mom’s on a Mission

By Joe Calamito

Recently on my daily walk through my neighborhood, I met two dynamic and interesting ladies, Sharon Romano and Marie Costantino placing gold bows on the poles in Bayonne, I am always looking to help promote someone or an organization in our River View Observer digital issue, so I asked the ladies what they were doing, and what was the significance of the Gold bows?

Here is what they told me…

September is Childhood cancer Awareness Month and we advocate for the many children who are battling this disease, the ones who are survivors and life with side effects and those angels who sadly were taken from us way too soon.

We both lost our sons to cancer .

Sharon continued, her son is Anthony Costantino and mine is Michael Romano . Both boys went through the Bayonne Public Schools and played Cal Ripken Baseball despite their illness.

There are about 15,000 children diagnosed with cancer each year in the US alone.

We set out on a Mission a few years ago to support this cause in Memory of our sons.

We hang gold boys throughout the town and we have gained the support of the Bayonne Board of Education and each year on the last Friday of the month the District will allow staff and students to wear Gold to support two wonderful Pediatric Cancer

Foundations; Tomorrows Children’s Fund at Hackensack Meridian and The Valerie Fund of New Jersey.  City Hall gives their support and  will do a flag raising on September 25, 2026 at 4:15pm .

The town of Bayonne truly comes together to support this important cause .

On October 9, 2026 there will be a charity softball game which will support the above named hospitals to assist patients and their families financially . Bayonne’s town heroes Police and Fire Departments and members of the Bayonne Board of Education will play each other .  Our Buddy Baseball team will also support and play a few innings to show their support.  Their will be some raffles and donations will be accepted at the game. The game will start at 5pm .

We call ourselves Two Moms on a Mission .

We won’t stop until a cure is found.

No child fights alone. ?

Next week we will have photos and more about the October 9th Charity softball game and we hope this post will inspire the good folks of Bayonne to come out and support these two Mom’s on a Mission.

HUDSON COUNTY EXECUTIVE CRAIG GUY ENCOURAGES HUDSON COUNTY RESIDENTS

TO REGISTER FOR SATURDAY’S 5th ANNUAL STRIDES FOR SAFETY 5K

County Executive Greg Guy

Annual race against gun violence returns this Saturday with Free Kids Fun Run and Waived Registration Fee for College Students

With one day to go until the 5th Annual Hudson County Strides for Safety 5K: A Race Against Gun Violence, Hudson County Executive Craig Guy is encouraging residents, families, students, advocates, law enforcement, and community organizations to register in advance and join hundreds of community members coming together this Saturday, September 19, in Lincoln Park.

“Strides for Safety has become an important tradition in Hudson County because it brings people together around a shared commitment to safer communities,” said County Executive Guy. “As we enter the fifth year of this event, I want to encourage everyone to register, bring your family and friends, and join us this Saturday. Every step we take together sends a message that preventing gun violence and building safer neighborhoods is a responsibility we all share.”

This year’s fifth anniversary celebration will also expand opportunities for families and young people to take part. For the first time, Strides for Safety will feature a free Kids Fun Run for children ages 5-12, giving Hudson County’s youngest residents an opportunity to participate alongside their families during a shorter run starting at 10 a.m. Local college students can also run for free by using a designated registration code.

“Five years ago, we started Strides for Safety with the goal of bringing our community together to stand against gun violence, and it has continued to grow because people across Hudson County have made it their own,” said Gina Hulings, Director of the Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs | Tourism Development. “This year, we are especially excited to welcome more families and young people to the event. Whether you are running the 5K, cheering from the sidelines or bringing your child to the Kids Fun Run, there is a place for everyone.”

Throughout its history, Strides for Safety has brought together community leaders and public-safety professionals to speak about the impact of gun violence and the importance of collaboration, prevention, and community involvement. Five years in, the event remains more than a race – it is a community-wide show of solidarity and a commitment to creating safer neighborhoods for generations to come.

Over the past four years, Strides for Safety has grown from a new community initiative into an annual gathering of hundreds of residents, families, advocates, law enforcement, and community organizations united around one goal: building a safer Hudson County. Participation has continued to grow each year. The 2024 race welcomed 435 registered participants and 30 volunteers, while the 2025 race surpassed 500 registered participants, demonstrating the community’s growing support for the event and its mission.

Residents are encouraged to register ahead of time to help ensure a smooth check-in process on race day. Registration ends on September 19, click here to register.
