Organized by the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey, Knock Out Opioid Abuse Day brings communities across New Jersey together to promote education and prevention. The New Jersey Senate and General Assembly have unanimously approved joint legislation permanently designating October 6 as Knock Out Opioid Abuse Day in New Jersey. 

Best known for its statewide substance use prevention advertising campaign, the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey is a private not-for-profit coalition of professionals from the communications, corporate and government communities whose collective mission is to reduce demand for illicit drugs in New Jersey through media communication.  To date, more than $200 million in broadcast time and print space has been donated to the Partnership’s New Jersey campaign, making it the largest public service advertising campaign in New Jersey’s history. Since its inception, the Partnership has garnered 233 advertising and public relations awards from national, regional and statewide media organizations.

This October, pink is more than just a color—it’s an urgent call to action right here at home. While breast cancer death rates have plummeted by 44% since 1989, diagnoses are steadily rising by about 1% every year—with the fastest increases seen in women under 50.

Because early detection is the ultimate cure—boasting a greater than 99% survival rate when caught at a localized stage—Palisades Medical Center is kicking off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with an interactive, highly visual “Pink Out” event. Medical experts, patients, and survivors will be on-site to urge local women to take advantage of new life-saving technologies, particularly in light of recent national guidelines urging women to begin screenings at age 40.

The Ghost of Uncle Joes is a Fundraiser for and at The Historic Jersey City Harsimus Cemetery. Today, Hudson County Executive Craig Guy applauded the Town of Kearny’s filing of a lawsuit against heliport operator Helo Holdings Inc. (HHI) in the Chancery Division of New Jersey Superior Court. HHI is located in the South Kearny portion of the town. In June, Hudson County Executive Craig Guy and the Board of County Commissioners entered into a shared services agreement to support coordinated legal action and the sharing of legal expenses aimed at addressing and curbing the impacts of incessant tourist helicopters flying over Hudson County municipalities.

“For years, Hudson County has been inundated with the relentless whirring of helicopters flying low over our communities, creating excessive noise and safety concerns for our residents. With the filing of this lawsuit, we will fight to ensure that the heliport operator is held accountable for its actions,” said Hudson County Executive Craig Guy. “Government works best when the County partners with our municipalities to work on behalf of our residents and we will keep fighting to ensure that HHI abides by agreements it previously made.”

Hudson County has filed papers with the court asking to be included as an interested party in the legal proceedings. This will give the County the ability to file legal briefs and certifications in support of Kearny’s suit. It is expected that the municipalities of Jersey City, Hoboken, and Bayonne and Union City will make similar applications to the court.

After more than 100 years of serving the Bayonne community, Barney Stock Hosiery Shops at 499 Broadway will close its doors permanently early this fall, as owner Mel Stock retires following almost 50 years at the helm of his family’s beloved store

Founded in 1922 by Barney Stock, Barney Stock Hosiery Shops became one of Bayonne’s most enduring small businesses — a fixture on Broadway that outlasted decades of change, chain retail, and economic upheaval.

Mel Stock and Larry Stock, sons of the founder, both went to work in the business following their graduations from NYU. While Larry had to leave the store after a short period due to poor health, Mel has spent his life at Barney Stock Shops. He took over the business, spending almost seven decades behind the counter serving generations of Bayonne families with the kind of personal service that has become a rarity in modern retail.

Known for its wide selection of hosiery, bras, Spanx, sportswear, girdles, and mastectomy apparel, Barney Stock Shops was as much a community institution as it was a store. Customers recall mothers and grandmothers shopping there for decades, with longtime reviews speaking to Mel’s personal attention — expert fittings, affordable prices, and a warmth that made every visit feel like family.

Later, in a partnership forged with a handshake, Barney and Phil Glass together moved to the store to 499 Broadway and expanded the business to a total of 6 stores across Bayonne, Jersey City, and Union City before Phil retired in the 1980s and Barney followed suit in 1987.

Mel Stock’s retirement brings down the curtain on a remarkable story of family, community, and commitment — a business built by one generation and carried faithfully into the next, for over 100 years serving the Bayonne community. About Barney Stock Shops: Barney Stock Hosiery Shops was founded in 1922 by Barney Stock in Bayonne, NJ. Hoboken’s River City Fair the fall and music festival one of Hoboken’s original waterfront festivals celebrating music, arts, culture, and community scheduled for Saturday, September 26th has been moved to the fair’s rain date of October 3rd, due to a forecasted nor’easter.

The October 3rd date will be held Pier A Park, along Sinatra Drive from Newark Street to Fifth Street and run from 12p.m to 5p.m

The festival will feature two stages, one at Sinatra Park and one at Pier A. Pier A will provide much-needed space for attendees following the success of the Observer Highway stage during the Spring Arts & Music Festival, which drew over 3,000 concertgoers.
