On Memorial Day, May 25th, 2026, as a Vietnam Era Veteran, I was proud to attend the 2026 Memorial Day event at Pershing Field in Jersey City, invited by a friend of 50 years, Thomas Murphy, the event , honored Vietnam Veterans who died in action and Veteran casualties who lost their lives from service -related illnesses after returning home from Vietnam.

This event was special to me because childhood friends of Murphy, were also my High school friends. Murphy worked diligently, to have their names added to the pavers.

Our friends being honored that day, John Whalen, Robert Postel, and Patrick Downes.

Their names were placed into the Hidden Casualties of War pavers that now reside with the name of Frances Dolan, another friend of ours which Murphy, placed years ago.

All four of their names, Dolan, Whalen, Postel and Downes sit across from The Jersey City Vietnam Veterans Memorial that also lists another of Murphy and my friends, Michael Majeski killed in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive.

The event was moving with Billy Joel’s song “Goodbye Saigon” playing on a loud- speaker, and roses being placed on the memorials by willing participants in attendance. There were speeches by Jersey City Mayor James Solomon , Former Freeholder Anthony Romano of Hoboken and Murphy, who fondly remembered our friends, and himself as the Hamilton Park Boys, Hamilton Park in downtown Jersey City, an area they frequented in their youth .

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee, President John Stanton acted as Master of Ceremonies to the event.

The Hudson County Community College Foundation Art Collection has long celebrated and showcased the work of artists from traditionally underrepresented communities, including the LGBTQ community. Today, it also plays a pivotal role in bringing renewed visibility to the memory of talented artists whose work and stories might have otherwise faded from view over the decades. In doing so, the Collection becomes more than a repository of artwork; it serves as a living archive of memory, resilience, and rediscovery.

One such story that deserves to be remembered and reexamined is that of David Acker.

Born in Lima, Peru in 1954 to American parents, Acker came to the United States with his family in 1957. His early life was marked by personal hardship, including the loss of his mother at a young age. He was shy and struggled while growing up and going to school in New Canaan, Connecticut, but he was driven by his creative spirit and carved out his own path. At Earlham College in Indiana, he pursued a double major in Biology and Art. He worked as an intern and apprentice to the artist Nell Blaine, assisting her on several trips to Europe.

Citywide initiative to support high-visibility enforcement from now through May 31 to improve occupant safety and reduce serious crashes

The Jersey City Department of Public Safety and the Jersey City Police Department will increase patrols for unbuckled drivers and passengers as part of this year’s national “Click It or Ticket” Seat Belt Enforcement Campaign from now to May 31.  The initiative expands on the city’s focus on increased traffic safety initiative and reducing serious injuries and fatalities on our roadways.
