Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Board of Trustees recently approved appointments to leadership positions, and awarded tenure to instructors. Â
HCCC President Dr. Chris Reber noted that the appointments and tenure awards reflect the College’s dedication to ensuring HCCC students receive a quality education provided by individuals who are the best in their fields.

Hudson County Community College (HCCC) officially celebrated the grand opening of its new Student Center at 81 Sip Avenue in Jersey City on Thursday, September 30, 2021. A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at 12:00 noon with HCCC President Dr. Christopher Reber officiating. Food tastings from Libby’s Home Kitchen and Starbucks, which are located in the Student Center, were available for students throughout the day. Attendees explored the new Student Center through self-guided tours.
HCCC one of just eight community colleges in the country to be awarded this national honor.
September 22, 2021, Jersey City, NJ – Hudson County Community College (HCCC) has received the 2021 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversitymagazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. The annual award recognizes colleges and universities in the United States that demonstrate outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. HCCC is one of just eight community colleges among the 101 award recipients.Â
“This significant national recognition is another point of pride made possible by the leadership and support of the College’s Board of Trustees, and the engagement and outstanding dedication and contributions of the entire HCCC family,†said HCCC President Dr. Christopher M. Reber.
“The HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees – and best practices for both, continued leadership support for diversity, and other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion,†said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “We take a detailed approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient. Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being done every day across their campus.â€
Hudson County Community College serves one of the most ethnically and racially diverse communities in the United States. In 2019, Dr. Reber established the President’s Advisory Council on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (PACDEI), a team of 40 students, faculty, staff, alumni, trustees, and external community members. PACDEI, through collaborations and partnerships, has played an essential role in the organic development of an inclusive institutional climate. At the time of PACDEI’s inception, HCCC administered a College-wide climate survey. The survey results informed the development of four Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) overarching goals that served as the foundation of PACDEI’s comprehensive DEI Action Plan. These DEI goals are interwoven in the College’s updated Mission, Vision, and Values statements, and the Board of Trustees’ Goals, Academic Master Plan, 2021-24 Strategic Plan, and Student Success Action Plan.Â
In July, the College established the HCCC Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and Yeurys Pujols was appointed the College’s inaugural Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. In addition to leading and supporting the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion – which also includes Accessibility Services, Cultural Affairs, and oversight of Title IX operations – Mr. Pujols is charged with promoting an institutional climate that embraces and celebrates differences while championing equitable and inclusive practices, policies, and procedures in all activities for all community members. This includes working with various HCCC offices and divisions to establish guidelines and practices for recruitment and hiring, screening committee policies, promotion considerations, and succession planning; creating clear and transparent processes for safety, security, and incident reporting that are free of intimidation and respectful of confidentiality; and building community and a sense of belonging for students by advancing their academic development, professional growth, and personal transformation.Â
“These activities will promote and expand an institutional culture in which every person is celebrated, every voice is encouraged to contribute to shaping our institutional climate, and an equity mindset is infused and embedded into every part of the College,†Mr. Pujols stated.
HCCC has also been selected to receive the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) 2021 Equity Award for the Northeastern United States. That award will be presented on October 14, 2021, at the 52nd Annual ACCT Leadership Congress in San Diego, California.Â

Students from Jersey City Public High Schools and Hudson County High Tech High School will receive college degrees on May 27.
Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Class of 2021 will include 31 students from area high schools who earned associate degrees as part of the HCCC Early College program. The Early College graduates will receive their diplomas during the in-person Grad Walk on Thursday, May 27, 2021 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the HCCC Culinary Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City.
“We are so proud of our Early College graduates, most of whom will be receiving their college diplomas a few weeks ahead of getting their high school diplomas,†said HCCC President Chris Reber. He explained that the HCCC Early College program permits juniors and seniors living in Hudson County or attending County high schools to enroll in up to 18 college-level credits per academic year, and earn credits towards an associate degree. Credits earned in the program transfer toward baccalaureate degrees at four-year colleges and universities.Â
Additionally, agreements with some high schools allow students the opportunity to earn a full Associate degree upon high school graduation with a combination of in-school, dual-enrollment classes and college courses taken after school. “Apart from the benefit of jump-starting their college education, students participating in the HCCC Early College program pay just half of the in-County tuition rate – a huge savings in comparison to tuition at four-year institutions,†Dr. Reber stated.
This the first year the College will present diplomas to students from the Jersey City Public Schools. Fourteen students from Dickinson High School are graduating with Associate of Science (A.S.) degrees in Environmental Studies; one student from Lincoln High School is graduating with an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree in Criminal Justice; and three students from Ferris High School are graduating with Associate of Science (A.S) degrees in Business Administration.

  Recently, Hudson County Community College (HCCC) students and staff provided Hudson County Executive Thomas A. DeGise with a tour of the recently completed Student Center at 81 Sip Avenue in Jersey City.  HCCC President Dr. Chris Reber and Mr. DeGise were joined by students and administrators in a tour of the renovated building, which was completed last March just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown.  “This building represents a milestone for Hudson County Community College as it is the first, dedicated Student Center in the College’s 47-year history,†Dr. Reber stated. “We are exceedingly grateful to County Executive DeGise, the County Commissioners, HCCC Trustees, and everyone who assisted in making this dream a reality for our students.† Dr. Reber said the $8.2 million renovation to a College-owned building was designed by Di Cara| Rubino Architects to create a state-of-the-art setting that affords students the very best in technology, safety and convenience. The renovation by APS Contracting, Inc. included the addition of façade brick stained to match that of the adjoining HCCC Gabert Library; replacement of the existing roof; complete interior demolition; the addition of a new entrance vestibule; installation of new HVAC systems, elevators, emergency generator; and a direct, indoor connection to the Gabert Library. Wi Fi and computer stations are available throughout the building, as are “green†elements for energy efficiency and the sustainability of resources.
