Passantino Wins Eight Awards from New Jersey Journalism Organization

BAYONNE, NJ – Freelance journalist Joseph Passantino won eight awards from the Garden State Journalism Association in its 70th Annual Memorial Journalism Awards competition.

Three of his honors were for work performed for the Hudson Reporter newspaper group, and five were for the TAPinto Bayonne news website.

Passantino received the Hildy Johnson Award for his story, “Smack Surges in Hudson County,” which appeared in The Weehawken Reporter. The GSJA bestows the honor for the “outstanding print or broadcast news story of the year.”

Along with Hudson Reporter colleague Al Sullivan, Passantino took home a second-place award in the Print/Investigative Reporting category for “Electronic Cheating? School District Investigates Possible Smart Phone Cheats.” The story ran in the Bayonne Community News.

Passantino won second place in the Photography, Essay category for “Snow Daze; After the Blizzard,” which ran in the Bayonne Community News. The photo series chronicled the city following a 20-inch snowfall.

For TAPinto Bayonne, Passantino won in the photography categories of Spot News, General News, and Portraits & Personalities.

In Spot News, he won first place for his photo titled “Sad Day,” taken following an apparent suicide in a downtown Bayonne park.

In General News, Passantino took both first and second places for “Just Super,” a picture of a super moon taken from The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor, and for “A Tale of Two Bridges.”

In Portraits & Personalities, he again took the two top spots; for “My Turn,” where he captured the image of a child waiting anxiously for his father to share ice cream, and “May I Help You?”, a shot of a dog “manning” the counter in a veterinarian’s office.

The honors were presented for work completed in 2016.

Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that Bayonne resident Award Winning Actress Tammy Blanchard: Tallulah,  Into the Woods, The Good Shepherd, Rabbit Hole and many other screen  stage and television  roles will be on hand for the Benefit Concert to sign autographs, appear on stage  and lend a hand to support Bayonne  in helping Baytown Texas.

Also  American Idol star Jackie Nese and her dancers will be performing and signing autographs at the Bayonne to Baytown benefit concert on Friday, September 22. Jackie is a rising star who ignites the passion in her young hip audiences with every performance. Along with Nashville star Joe Bayer, The Blue Dawg Band, Rocco and the Mob, and various other performers, she will rock the house.

Bayonne Summer Sounds by the Bay Entertainment Schedule

  Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the City of Bayonne will present the Summer Sounds by the Bay concerts Wednesdays, from July 12 through August 23, at 7:00 p.m., weather permitting. The concerts will be held at the amphitheater on the lower level of DiDomenico-16th Street Park, which is located between Avenue A and Newark Bay.  The schedule is as follows:

 Theater troupes have a passion for costumed period pieces and the Bayonne Theater Company has gone back to the Middle Ages to bring Boho residents and visitors some rollicking medieval fun.

The 2nd annual Bayonne Renaissance Festival happens Sat, July 22nd from noon to 7 pm and much of the entertainment is a step back in time. Bayonne Library Offers Free Summer Movies

 

             Community information for the city of bayonne

   Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the Bayonne Public Library is offering a series of nine free summer movies on most Wednesdays through August 16 at 1:00 p.m. in the O’Connor Gallery on the second floor of the library.  The building is located at 31st Street and Avenue C.  There will be no film shown on Wednesday, July 5, since that date is during the July 4 holiday period.

The films to be shown include award winners and nominees, plus a selection of children’s movies that are not just for kids.  The films intended primarily for children will be shown July 26 through August 16. Youngsters attending the children’s films must be accompanied by an adult.  No children will be admitted for the adult selections. 

The following films will be shown on Wednesdays:

 

July 12: La La Land.  Rating: PG-13.  Running time: 2hrs. 8 minutes.

July 19: Fences. Rating: PG-13. Running time: 2 hrs. 19 minutes.

July 26: Beauty and The Beast. Rating: PG. Running time: 2 hrs. 9 minutes.

August 2: Trolls. Rating: PG. Running time: 1 hr. 32 minutes.

August 9: Boss Baby. Rating: PG. Running time: 1 hr. 37 minutes. 

August 16: Sing. Rating: PG. Running time: 1 hr. 48 minutes.

Young Frankenstein is being shown as a tribute to Gene Wilder, who plays Dr. Frankenstein in the film. Singing in the Rain is being presented as a tribute to Debbie Reynolds, who plays Cathy Selden in the movie.  Wilder and Reynolds both passed away in 2016.

THREE WEEK SCHEDULE AS OF JUNE 23, 2017
 
The following work is scheduled over the next three weeks:
 
Toll Plaza
  • East side (entering 14A): renovation of existing Toll Utility Building continues.
Ramps between the Toll Plaza and the Hudson County Extension (HCE)
  • Local street level work at Garfield, Avenue C and JFK Boulevard bridges will resume in the summer of 2017. This work will be supported by Jersey City and Bayonne Police as needed.
  • During the evenings of 06/29/17, 8:00PM to 5:00AM, traffic impacts are expected on the ramps to and from the Hudson County Extension and the Interchange 14A Toll Plaza for asphalt paving operations. This work will be supported by the New Jersey State Police. 
Avenue E / Proposed Roundabout
  • New roadway construction on Avenue E near 53rd Street continues.
Connector Bridge (Bridge from the Toll Plaza to Port Jersey Boulevrd)
  • Traffic was shifted onto the new Connector Bridge in a two-way temporary traffic pattern. Please CLICK HERE for graphic.
  • Pedestrian usage of the bridge for access to and from Port Jersey Boulevard continues to be prohibited. Please CLICK HERE for shuttle bus pamphlet.
Route 440 and Pulaski Street Intersection / Jughandle
  • Ramp roadway construction continues.
  • Ramp structure construction to southbound Route 440 continues.
Ramp Area East of Route 440
  • New ramp construction continues.
  • Retaining wall construction continues.
  • Bridge deck construction on the bridge structure over Pulaski Street continues.
  • During the week of 07/17/17, nighttime detours of the southbound Route 440 Jughandle at Pulaski Street will be required for approximately one (1) week in support of bridge steel erection. Work will be supported by Bayonne Police.
