Dining in the Glow of the Lamp Post

Try the Lamp Post Bar & Grille for Hearty Dishes, Local Brews and Neighborhood Charm

By Sally Deering

Downtown Jersey City looked a lot different back in the day and on Second Street, between Monmouth and Brunswick Streets, the neighborhood bar known first as The Village Pub and  and then renamed the My Way Lounge attracted blue collar regulars who bellied up to the bar for some beers and small talk.

Ten years ago, Tom Egar and his sister-in-law Michelle Egar, who grew up in the same neighborhood bought Miller’s Pub with their friend Monica Kress. They renovated, updated and renamed it The Lamp Post Bar & Grille and although some things have changed, The Lamp Post has kept its connection to the neighborhood by offering hearty dishes at good prices in a welcoming atmosphere. Arthur’s Tavern Serves Delmonico Steaks with Old Hoboken Charm

by Sally Deering

In a town where almost every doorway on Washington Street leads to an eatery, Arthur’s Tavern on the corner of 3rd Street stands out as a Hoboken treasure – a throwback to the way the town looked back in the day with prices that are more than reasonable (a Delmonico hamburger for $5.95) and steaks and sides as yummy and comforting as your favorite dish on grandma’s table.

The tables decked out in red-checkered tablecloths first catch your attention as soon as you walk in the door. Then you notice the stained-glass lamps hanging from the hammered-tin ceiling. Add to that the mouth-watering aroma of sizzling Delmonico steaks and you immediately relax a little, ready to settle in for some hearty and delicious fare. Laico’s Restaurant Neighborhood Favorite for Over 30 Years

River View Observer reviews Laico’s Restaurant one of Hudson County’s favorite and Best Italian Restaurants
by Sally Deering

color-photo-of-laicos-restThirty-eight years ago, Louis and Felice Laico opened a neighborhood restaurant on Terhune Ave in Jersey City, where families shared a huge pizza pie, soda came in a pitcher and beer flowed from the tap. A humble family eatery serving delicious Italian cuisine to neighborhood regulars, professors at the local colleges and old-timers who shared colorful stories of Jersey City back in the day.

Although Louis and Felice have since passed on, their son Louis Laico, Jr, who worked side-by-side with his mom and dad, took over the restaurant, keeping that warm, ‘welcome-to-the-family’ ambience that invites you in as soon as you enter the door. Laico family members wait tables and bartend – Louis’s brother-in-law Jimmy Wolowitz is bar manager and Louis’ wife Gloria sometimes fills in when they need a hostess.

Ten East – Hibachi, Fusion and Sushi Bar Lounge

James Bond Cool with a Side of Sexy!

by Sally Deering

ten-east-inside

Tucked away in the back of South Cove Commons, a waterfront mall in Bayonne where fast-food places gratify customers on the run, Ten East – Hibachi, Fusion and Sushi Bar Lounge is an intoxicating oasis at the end of an asphalt parking lot. An exotic restaurant where the cocktails, cuisine and atmosphere are so divinely cool, you can practically picture Secret Agent 007 ordering a Jade martini (vodka and melon-pear juice) shaken, not stirred.

The alluring atmosphere at Ten East whispers James Bond cool as you step inside the sleek and sexy restaurant bathed in red lighting with two stylish dining rooms and the sleek curves of an inviting bar. The lounge serves as the central focal point between the Asian Fusion dining room and the Hibachi dining area where nimble-fingered chefs prepare your meal right at your table juggling cutlery in a dramatic display of culinary “martial arts.”

Ten East is the dream child of brothers Anthony and Patrick Franconeri, who grew up in Bayonne the sons of hard-working parents who ran their own local eatery. The boys, who attended Marist High School, decided they would someday design their own restaurant in Bayonne that would reflect their personal tastes. The result:  a sexy, sultry restaurant and club that serves sophisticated Asian cuisine in a sensual atmosphere and perfect location for appetizing adventures.
