The Arts Pop Up Everywhere in Hudson County

Hudson County has become a haven for artists . On any street, at any given time, you’ll never know what art medium might be staring you in the face. Like this graffiti figure staring from behind bushes on Rt. 440 in Bayonne.

Here an artist has planted Coors Light Bottles to look like aÂ hostas plant.

To bad it wasn’t Bud Light -then we could call this photo…

Â “This Buds for you.”

Â At leftÂ a bearded performance artists is seen juggling onÂ Avenue C, in Bayonne.

The Print in Question!

Who is the Artist?

When was it paintedÂ ?

Does it have any financial Value?

Â Who else has a print? Only 250 prints were made Number 80 is in my posession.

Many years ago while rummaging through the downtown Jersey City Salvation Army on 14th Street I came across the above print. I was intrigued by its subject matter-a little girl with blonde hair pulling a toy duck on a string while her mother or guardian stares at a fountain, perhaps in France. My own mother had passed away a few years earlier in 1994 and the print reminded me of how she would always take me to Hamilton Park in Jersey City. I paid $20 dollars for the print and it has shared a prominent place on the walls of our homes for the past 15 years or more. I love it! Continue reading Unraveling An Art Mystery… →

HCCC Art Student-Produced Mural Unveiled at 25 Journal Squareâ€™s Student Lounge

Hudson County Community College

On Wednesday, May 12, Hudson County Community College’s Fine Art Department and the Office of Student Activities held an unveiling ceremony of a 4′ x 18′ mural painted specifically for the Student Lounge at 25 Journal Square.

Â In addition to the mural reception, the Fine Art Department had the students’ works on view in the Student Art Gallery on the fourth floor at 25 Journal Square.

Â Pictured are Laurie Riccadonna (third from left), Coordinator of the Fine Art program, and College students who participated in the production of the mural during the spring semester.

Jersey City Artist subject of this month’s -Art Views

Carl Ellis was born and raised in Erie Pennsylvania and earned his BFA in photography, at Edinboro University in 1991. He moved to New York City in 1992.

Camera in hand, he had hopes of becoming a commercial photographer.

Taking place at the crossroads of 4th Street, Newark Avenue and Brunswick Street, the event featured an array of local artistsâ€™ works, the finest up-and-coming bands New Jersey has to offer, and delicious food from local vendors.

Crowds come out for 2nd Annual Yo Mamaâ€™s Craft Fair in Downtown, Jersey City

According to their websiteÂ Not Yo Mama’s Craft Fair started last year with an idea and acted upon by Sophie Penkrat, Megan Gulick and Leah Siegel- Picus.

The second annual fair was held yesterday On Saturday April 17 to entusiastic crowds Â and Â over 60 artistsÂ selling Â 7500 or more items at Parlay Studio’s 161 2nd St., Downtown Jersey City.Â Â Everything fromÂ jewelry, leather goods, soaps, furniture, cakes, leather bags, paintingsÂ andÂ many other items were on display and being sold.

The doors opened at 11am and the event Â ran until 6pm.

Besides the vendors, live entertainment was provided byÂ Kelly St. Patrick, Hezekiah Jones, Any Day Parade, Chrisitan Alessi, Land of the Look Behind

A portion of yesterday ‘s fair proceeds will go to Arts to Grow a non -profit organization which is dedicated to providing inner city children with a chance to explore the visual, literary and performing arts

Presenting sponsors of yesterday’s event was the Saffron, Boutique Realty and Michael Anthony’s.

BAYONNE HIGH SCHOOL ART STUDENTS RECEIVE AWARDS AT EMERGING 2010 Art Competition

Amanda Unger and Lilian Makar were presented with awards for their artwork in the 22nd Annual Emerging Artists Exhibit sponsored by the Art Administrators of New Jersey. This exhibit featured artwork produced by students who are studying art in high schools throughout the state of New Jersey.

Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Amanda, a junior, and Computer Graphics student of Mrs. Charlann Meluso, received a Merit Award for her image titled “Your Favorite Drug”.Â Â It was a digital image of a snap shot of a prescription drug bottle spilling jewels onto a hand that is reaching into the photo, creating an illusion of a third dimension. JC FRIDAY’S IS BACK- March 5th

Â JC Fridays, Jersey City’s acclaimed city-wide celebration of arts and culture, returns on Friday, March 5, 2010 with events happening throughout day, including art exhibitions, live music, performances, and educational demonstrations. JC Fridays was created in 2005 by a coalition of artists, arts organizations and local businesses that wanted to showcase Jersey City’s exciting and burgeoning cultural landscape. Today Art House Productions and JC Fridays’ Major Sponsors presentÂ this eagerly anticipated quarterly event, taking place at the start of every season, where both residents and visitors can celebrate the growing vibrancy and distinct charm that Jersey City has to offer. Since its inception, the number of participants has more than doubled through increasing outreach to Jersey City’s neighborhoods, organizations, businesses and artists. JC Fridays is made possible through a grant by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, with major support provided by the State of New Jersey Urban Enterprise Zone Program and a host of other sponsors and patrons. Opening Reception for “HERSTORY” at Justice William J. Brennan Court House, Theodore Conrad Rotunda, Jersey City

In celebration of Women’s History Month;” Herstory,” an exhibit of black and white photographs taken by local women photographers: Danielle Fotopoulos,Virginia Kamenitzer,Beatrice M. Mady, Dot Paolo, Melida Rodas,Roberta C. Scott, Reena Rose Sibayan (Photographer for the Jersey Journal), Debbie Teicholz, Tara Thurber of women in the arts, sciences, the environment and other professions had itsÂ opening reception on Tuesday evening March 2nd, in the Justice William J. Brennan Court House, Theodore Conrad Rotunda.Â In attendance wasÂ aÂ large receptive crowd of family, friends and Hudson County residents.
