Mayor Fulop Continues 2017 State of the City Addresses Ward C

Ward C Address Focuses on Revitalizing Journal Square and Moving the Neighborhood Toward Becoming the Most Important Arts Community in New Jersey

JERSEY CITY – Mayor Steven M. Fulop will continue the series of 2017 State of the City Addresses today in Ward C, taking the message directly to the residents to emphasize the important role each community and individual plays in the progress Jersey City is making. A total of six speeches, one in each ward, will be delivered over the course of the next several weeks.

Monday’s speech will highlight the development occurring in the Journal Square neighborhood with the focus on arts and culture, including:

 

●      Announcing new RFP with the Friends of Loew’s for the Loew’s Theater management and renovations to be released this Spring

 

●      New museum in Journal Square to open in the Pathside Building; Purchase of land from County underway

 

●      Revisiting zoning changes for both Journal Square 2060 and the Journal Square Arts District

 

●      Finalize plans for the Apple Tree House re-opening

 

While the speech will address results citywide, new development and social service outreach to the homeless community in Journal Square will also be major focuses for Ward C in the upcoming year.

“We have seen incredible growth begin to occur within this neighborhood, and our hope is that Journal Square will once again become the economic heart of our city,” said Mayor Fulop. “Through investing in arts and culture, improving neighborhood infrastructure, and collaborating with community groups, we are making incredible progress in building a dynamic and inclusive Journal Square.”

The State of the City Addresses will take place at 6:30 p.m. on each of the following dates:

EXECUTIVE ORDER OF THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF JERSEY CITY ESTABLISHING THE CITY OF JERSEY CITY AS A SANCTUARY CITY

Executive Order Jersey City Sanctuary City On February 3rd, 2017 Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop signed an Executive  Order re-affirming and strengthening Jersey City’s Sanctuary City status and outlining a detailed policy on the matter for the Police Department and other city departments and agencies who work with the immigrant community. Here is the Executive Order: 

WHEREAS, Jersey City values its ethnic, racial, linguistic, and socio-economic diversity. which is a source of our strength and ensures that all our residents can live and pursue their livelihoods in peace and prosperity; and

WHEREAS, the targeting of immigrants undermines our democracy and our common humanity and degrades life everywhere but especially for the residents of a proud and richly diverse City such as the City of Jersey City; and

WHEREAS, local enforcement of immigration law whereby local law enforcement voluntarily works on behalf of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to facilitate deportations, undermines trust and cooperation between immigrant communities and the police and could expose the City to liability for violations of individuals’ Constitutional rights; and

WHEREAS, the identification and reporting of immigrants who have not been charged much less convicted of any crime unduly burdens and diverts municipal resources; disrupts and interferes with the City’s duty to deliver basic municipal services such as healthcare, education and police protection; and

JERSEY CITY – Mayor Steven M. Fulop will be joined by members of the City Council and immigration advocates tomorrow to sign an executive order re-affirming the city’s Sanctuary Cities status and outlining a detailed policy on the matter for the Police Department and other city departments and agencies who work with the immigrant community.  As one of the most diverse cities in the nation, with 40 percent of the population foreign born, the executive order establishes a firm policy preventing city resources from being used on the enforcement of federal immigration law and will serve as a model for other cities in New Jersey and the nation.  The policy was drafted in partnership with a coalition of immigration advocates including the New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice, the ACLU of New Jersey, American Friends Service Committee and Make the Road New Jersey.

Opening of Application Process for the 2017 Jersey City Summer Internship Program Announced by Mayor Fulop

More than 3,000 young Jersey City residents have participated in the JC Summer Works Initiative

City Hall Jersey City  Jersey City Summer Internship Program (JCSI), a youth employment initiative started by the Fulop administration in 2014 that connects Jersey City public high school students to paid internships at the city’s leading companies and institutions while also earning academic credit was announced today by Mayor Steven M. Fulop  that the opening of the online application process has begun. JCSI is a part of the city’s broader Jersey City Summer Works initiative, which has provided summer employment and enrichment for more than 3,000 young people in city departments and agencies, corporations and nonprofits since the initiative began.

In these troubled times, the U.S. turns to its military, the men and women (and four-legged, bomb-sniffing soldiers) to protect America’s freedom and democracy.

On Sat, Nov. 12, starting at noon, Jersey City Mayor and U.S. Marine Veteran Steven M. Fulop and the Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs, local U.S. military men and women and other dignitaries will lead the 2nd annual Parade of Veterans and Heroes followed by a Veterans Resource Fair that will be held at City Hall until 5 pm.

The Parade of Veterans and Heroes is open to anyone who would like to march, especially men and women who are serving and have served in the military. Registration for participants will begin at 10 am at the Historic Jersey City Harsimus Cemetery on Newark Avenue near Dickinson High School. (You can also register online.)  High up on the 4th floor of Jersey City Hall, the Office of Cultural Affairs lead by Director Elizabeth Cain looks out upon the city’s street life while it oversees the city’s cultural life and the programs that connect its communities beyond brick and mortar.

Cain took over the post in 2014 after working on Jersey City Mayor Steven M. Fulop’s transition team. Prior to becoming the Cultural Affairs department head, Cain served as Executive Director for the Historic Downtown Special Improvement District (HDSID) which sponsors popular community events like Groove on Grove and Everything Jersey City. She worked for developers Paul and Eric Silverman, whose Jersey City properties often include public spaces where local artists exhibit their work. JERSEY CITY, N.J. (June 25, 2015) —  Mayor Steven M. Fulop and other Jersey City officials today joined representatives of BLDG, Ares Management, L.P. and Urban Development Partners to celebrate the grand opening of The One with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The ribbon cutting marked the start of leasing at the new 36-story luxury residential tower in the heart of Jersey City’s burgeoning Powerhouse Arts District, as well as the unveiling of a 67-by-80-foot mural that reflects the city’s artistic culture and its connection with the surrounding architecture.

Developed by a joint-venture partnership of BLDG, Ares Management, L.P. and Urban Development Partners, The One offers a mix of 439 studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments.

“This building has an artistic and unique design that will both add to the city’s growing skyline and contribute to the exciting Powerhouse Arts District,” said Mayor Fulop.  “We look forward to welcoming the new residents who will live here and call Jersey City home.”

WORLD PREMIERE OF THE JERSEY DEVIL HITS JERSEY CITY

Comedy film presented by the Jersey City International Television and Film Festival.

Jersey Devil Jersey City, NJ – The Jersey City International Television and Film Festival, Humanity Pride Productions, Green Light Films and Diamond Jesus Productions have announced that the World Premiere of the comedy film The Jersey Devil will be Wednesday, September 24th at the Loews Landmark in Jersey City. With the support of the Film Office of Jersey City and the Mayor’s Office, The Jersey Devil was shot throughout Jersey City earlier in 2014. One of the filming locations used was the Landmark Loews, which opened in 1929. This legendary theater continues to hold events today and will bring this Hollywood-style premiere to Journal Square, almost 85 years to the day of its opening. In keeping with Mayor Fulop’s vision of making Jersey City a “mecca” for film production, the creators of The Jersey Devil also utilized diverse neighborhoods throughout the city, including the Brightside Tavern in the Paulus Hook neighborhood, New Jersey City University in Greenville and City Hall. In addition to using NJCU as a location in the film, students attending NJCU were also involved in various aspects of the production. The cast and crew dined throughout the shoot on delicious food supplied entirely by Jersey City food vendors and many Jersey City residents from the surrounding location communities were used as extras in the film. Jeresey City Mayor Steven M. Fulop and At-Large Councilman Daniel Rivera announced today that they will present an ordinance to the City Council at next week’s meeting to name the new West District Police precinct in honor of slain Detective Melvin Santiago.

Mayor Steven M. Fulop and At-Large Councilman Daniel Rivera announced today that they will present an ordinance to the City Council at next week’s meeting to name the new West District Police precinct in honor of slain Detective Melvin Santiago.

An officer in the City’s West District, Det. Santiago, 23, was an and was on patrol when he was shot and killed in the line of duty on July 13, 2014 while responding to a call of an armed robbery at the Walgreens on Communipaw Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard.
