Phase One Reopening Allows for Private Prayer Only Beginning on Sunday
NEWARK —Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R, Archbishop of Newark, announced this week a three-phase gradual reopening process for churches throughout the Archdiocese to ensure the health and well-being of clergy and faithful.
Beginning on Sunday, May 17, 2020, Phase One will reopen churches in the Archdiocese for private prayer only, following all public health guidelines and once pastors determine they can safely do so. As part of Phase One, the Sacrament of Reconciliation also may be celebrated if social distancing can be maintained and masks are worn.
The Hoboken Health Department reported no new cases or fatalities due to COVID-19 yesterday in Hoboken. Hoboken’s total cases as of this morning are 540 known, confirmed COVID-19 cases and 26 fatalities.
Open Street on Adams Street this weekend
I’m glad to share that we are continuing our “open streets†pilot this weekend on Adams Street between 3rd and 9th Streets. Last weekend’s successful open streets pilot on Jefferson Street demonstrated that open streets serve as a great way to get fresh air, safely social distance, and help alleviate crowds in public parks. Residents can utilize this space this weekend for walking, biking and jogging.
Adams Street between 3rd and 9th Streets will be restricted to vehicular traffic between 8 am and 8 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Traffic Control Officers will be on hand to assist residents gaining access to garages and to move vehicles. Congregating is prohibited, and face masks should be worn at all times.
I’ve received a few additional comments about requests to close Sinatra Drive to vehicular traffic. As mentioned previously, while I support this during normal times, unfortunately we could see additional people from outside Hoboken coming to our waterfront as the weather gets nicer. We want to ensure that closing Sinatra Drive does not have the unintended consequence of making our waterfront even more of a destination for non-residents, which is not ideal during COVID-19.
Open Streets Survey
Over 2,280 people filled out the City’s open street survey this week. 88% of total respondents want “open streets†to continue during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide additional space for social distancing. 74% want open streets to continue when COVID-19 is no longer a factor, while 84% want Washington Street to operate as an open street, even if it meant a temporary loss in parking. When asked for their primary reason for using the open street, 75% said for recreation and 17% said it was on their way to another destination. Users reported walking and biking as their most common activities.

Together we can make a larger impact when we give in support and celebration of the nonprofits that make Hudson County a great place to live, work and play!
HCCB is 100% volunteer-run & 100% donation-based.
They are contingent on donations they receive during their paddle days in their cove, and fundraisers like this, to continue to be there for the community.
Giving even a small donation can go a long way as the nonprofit with the most individual donors will be able to receive additional funding from Hudson Gives partners. So, add Thursday, May 14th to your calendar and be sure to donate between 12AM and 11:59PM on that day!
The mission of HCCB is to provide free water sport programs and access to local waterways for all to enjoy. They want to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, background, economic standing, or prior experience has the opportunity to enjoy a healthy outdoor activity in our community.
Every weekend during the summer months HCCB provides free kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and outrigger canoeing for all. Initially, our free public paddling program was only offered 1-3 times a year. Now, HCCB is open every weekend during the summer serving an average of 6,000 paddlers each year!
In addition to our free paddling programs, HCCB regularly organizes beach clean-ups in conjunction with Plastic Patrol and other environmental organizations.

May 11, 2020, Jersey City, NJ – Healthcare experts predict that the COVID-19 pandemic will greatly exacerbate the opioid crisis in the United States. With more than 2 million Americans struggling with opioid use disorder, and an average of 130 Americans dying of drug overdose each day before the pandemic, the crisis has become an even greater priority for local, state and federal officials and healthcare and social services providers.

The RIOT program educators and speakers are Rutgers graduate students in the fields of public health, pharmacy, social work, applied and professional psychology, health professions, and biomedical science. Their presentations cover a broad overview of the opioid epidemic, risk factors, and effective treatment options. The group is committed to increasing education about and reducing the stigma of opioid addiction. RIOT is funded by a grant from the New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services.
