Rental Assistance Program Available for Homeless People and At-Risk Tenants

         

          The Bayonne Economic Opportunity Foundation (BEOF) announced that the Rapid Re-Housing Rental Assistance Program is available for homeless people and those who are at risk of becoming homeless.  The program can help with the security deposit and/or rental subsidy for up to twelve months.  Residents of Bayonne and other communities in Hudson County are eligible to apply for this housing assistance through the BEOF.

          The Rapid Re-Housing Program offers monthly case management to help the tenant access resources and become housing-stable over the course of the program.  During the program, households pay 30% of their gross monthly income towards rent.  The objective is to help households reach their goals and be able to maintain their housing going forward.

Week 4 of Jersey City Theater Center’s 6th Annual New Play Festival: STRENGTH To Take Place Online

The month long festival, part of New Jersey Theatre Alliance’s Stages Festival, features 10 new works from emerging playwrights 

The Jersey City Theater Center (JCTC) staff have transferred the final program scheduled for its 2022 New Play Festival to an online format. Due to COVID-19 affecting some team members, the production taking place during Week 4 (Thursday, May 26, 2022) can now be accessed via Zoom at www.jctcenter.org. 

“COVID has become an element of our world that forces us to take extra precautions to protect our supporters,” said Olga Levina, artistic director of JCTC. “Our team wants to ensure that all of our producers, patrons, and performers remain safe while concluding our Festival with quality virtual presentations. We encourage attendees who were planning to visit us in person to join us on Zoom to experience our final performance, which we’re extremely proud to premiere. Until we can guarantee a safe reopening of our Theater, we’re committed to maintaining our daily operations through online and hybrid formats.” 

Centered on the timely theme of STRENGTH, the Festival– which commenced on May 5, 2022 and will end on Thursday, May 26– kicked off with five short plays presented online. The virtual plays were supposed to be followed by three full weeks of live performances at JCTC Studios, including the final play that will now be presented online. In total, the festival will showcase 10 new plays by 11 emerging playwrights who, together, represent the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Slovenia, and Romania. All events include a Q&A and discussion with the playwrights; admission is free with a suggested $25 donation.

Hoboken Historical Museum March in Hoboken’s Memorial Day Parade

Join The Hoboken Historical Museum Wednesday, May 25 as they march up Washington Street in the city’s Memorial Day parade, honoring US Military personnel who died while serving.

From City Hall: “This year marks the 122nd year of marching up Washington Street in honor of those that made the ultimate sacrifice.”  

Walk with the Museum in honor of our servicemen and women, and their families. Community, commemoration and celebration! Floats and marching bands! Be a part of it. Meet up with us in front of City Hall on Wednesday, May 25th at 6:15. The parade up “The Avenue” begins at 6:30.

Bayonne Hometown Fair Set for Saturday, June 4, and Sunday, June 5

Fun Event for the Entire Family Returns to Bayonne in 2022

Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the 2022 Bayonne Hometown Fair will take place on Saturday, June 4, and Sunday, June 5.  This will be the sixth fair in its current format.  The event did not take place in 2020 or 2021, due to the Coronavirus. On Saturday, the fair’s hours will be from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.  On Sunday, the fair’s hours will be from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m.  The fair will be located along Broadway, from 21st Street to 26th Street. The 2022 fair will feature food, games, rides, vendors, and musical entertainment.   Mayor Davis said, “We are happy to welcome back the Bayonne Hometown Fair after a two-year hiatus. Local organizations, businesses, entertainers, and volunteers are working to make sure that this year’s fair is a great event.  We can all look forward to the 2022 Hometown Fair.”

Hudson County Community College to Celebrate Graduating Students Who Began in ESL Classes

    Hudson County Community College (HCCC) will hold an “ESL to Graduation” Celebration, an event to honor graduates who began their HCCC academic journeys in the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program.

     The ceremony will include remarks by HCCC President, Dr. Christopher Reber; Interim Director, English as a Second Language and Academic Foundations English, Jed Palmer; Associate Professor, ESL, Linda Miller; and several HCCC alumni and graduating students.

THE NJ POISON CONTROL CENTER WARNS DIY Recipes for Formula Are Not a Safe Option for Baby Formula Shortage

 As the formula shortage worsens, parents and caregivers find themselves in emergency situations where they cannot find baby formula. Shortages have caused parents and caregivers to search for other options to feed their babies. Unknowingly, some of the options may put their baby’s health at serious risk.

The NJ Poison Control Center warns families of the misinformation circulating online and on social media claiming it is safe to dilute (watered-down) formula or use homemade/Do-It-Yourself (DIY) recipes as alternatives. Neither of these options are safe alternatives, and both can result in serious harm to infants.

Bayonne Memorial Day Parade to Return in 2022

Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the City of Bayonne, in conjunction with the Bayonne Memorial Day Parade Committee, have organized the return of the Bayonne Memorial Day Parade, on Monday, May 30, 2022.   The parade has not taken place since 2019, due to concerns about the Coronavirus in 2020 and 2021. 

Mayor Davis explained, “The parade has been a Bayonne tradition since 1918. We call upon the patriotic residents of Bayonne to turn out for the parade’s return on Monday, May 30.  We look forward to seeing people out on Broadway again for this parade.”

Pete Amadeo, Supervisor of the Bayonne Recreation Division, has been working on the parade with the veterans on the Bayonne Memorial Day Parade Committee.  Barry Jones, an Army veteran, chairs the Memorial Day Parade Committee.  Michael Wilson, a Navy veteran, will be the Grand Marshal of the 2022 parade. 

The parade will assemble at 9:00 a.m. on East 5th Street between Broadway and Isabella Avenue, and will commence at 10:00 a.m. There will be a brief ceremony at the start of the parade to honor our deceased veterans and to place a wreath at the World War I Memorial. The parade will proceed north along Broadway and will then pass a reviewing stand setup in front of American Legion Post 19 and will end at 32nd Street and Broadway.

HEATHER WILLIAMS -PROTECTIVE SPIRITS -BRIDGE ART GALLERY

We would all like to believe our ancestors are smiling down at us.  We want to think that if they could see us, they’d beam with approval.  In the fantasy, they’d radiate nothing but warmth.  But if we could stand before them, what would we observe?  What marks would omniscience leave on their faces?  If they could watch us as we went about our lives — if they could peer into our private moments — would they really be so pleased?  And what about the parlous state of the world?  Would they not be weary of all the deleterious matters and cruel inequities that obstruct their guidance and protection?

Heather Williams has thought about all of this, and she’s been brutally honest about it.  Her “Protective Spirits” are formidable, and sincere, but they’re also tired of the nonsense. The weight of history is heavy on their faces: it drags down their eyelids, furrows their brows, and tears at their terra-cotta cheeks. Williams’s visages will stare out from the walls of the Bridge Gallery (199 Broadway, Bayonne) until mid-July.  Standing before one of them is a bit like facing a stern but loving auntie after you’ve screwed up. Facing an entire roomful, as you do at “Protective Spirits,” might just prompt you to reevaluate some of your dodgier decisions in order to get right with the ancestors.
