Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the Bayonne Public Library is offering a series of free afternoon and evening summer movies on Wednesdays from July 6 through August 31 at 1:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the O’Connor Gallery on the second floor of the library. The building is located at 31st Street and Avenue C.
All of the movies scheduled for the library have been released in the last two years. The films to be shown include movies for adults in the afternoons and films for children and families in the evenings. Youngsters attending the children’s films must be accompanied by an adult. No children will be admitted for the R-rated movies.

The Bayonne Division of Recreation has announced the 2022 Summer Sounds By the Bay Concert Series. Weather permitting, each performance will be begin promptly on Wednesday nights at 7:00pm and held at the amphitheater on the lower level of DiDomenico-16th Street Park, which is located between Avenue A and Newark Bay. The concerts are scheduled for Wednesdays from July 13 through August 17, with August 24 as a rain date. “We are ready for a great summer. We have a great lineup of music, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone enjoying the summer nights,†stated Pete Amadeo, Supervisor of Recreation.
The following concerts have been scheduled:
July 13 – Super Transam performs the music of the 1970’s, covering the songs of The Eagles, Hall and Oates, Queen, the Doobie Brothers, Paul McCartney and Wings, Peter Frampton, Foreigner, Kiss, Boston, and Journey, among others.
July 20 – The Winslow Eagles Tribute Band celebrates the music of The Eagles. This powerhouse ensemble creates the live performance of The Eagles and the signature sound that made them one of the most successful musical groups of the ‘70’s.Â
July 27 – Long Live the Beatles, the longest-running Beatles show in the country, is an all-live musical event with an incredible, show-stopping impersonation of one of the greatest musical groups of all time. The show recreates the sights and sounds of the Beatles from 1962 to 1970.
August 3 – AM Gold Yacht Rock is a New York City-based tribute band, performing the adult-contemporary hit songs from the late 1970’s through the mid-1980’s. They cover the music of such artists as Hall and Oates, Steely Dan, Huey Lewis, Christopher Cross, Lionel Richie, and so many more.
August 10 – Lights Out Beach Boys combines the music of the Beach Boys with the smooth moves of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Sing along to the West Coast hits while you dance along with the moves created by one of the greatest groups to hit the musical landscape.
August 17 – The Amish Outlaws will surprise the audience constantly and keep everyone guessing as to what they could possibly play next, from Johnny Cash to Jay Z, Lady Gaga to Snoop Dog and Dr. Dre, Pitbull to Elvis Presley, Luke Bryan to Dropkick Murphy, to theme songs from the TV shows they have come to know.
August 24 – This rain date will be used as needed. Depending on the weather, other rain dates may be announced.

The Bayonne Division of Recreation announced that the County of Hudson will sponsor a boat trip for senior citizens on Thursday, June 30th, 2022, courtesy of Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise, County Commissioner Ken Kopacz of Bayonne, and the other members of Hudson County Board of Commissioners.
Limited numbers of tickets are available for the excursion in each Hudson County municipality. Â
Open to Bayonne residents, ages 60 and older, that are mobile and do not require wheelchair assistance. Â
There will be a lottery system of those registered to attend the boat trip.

The Cruise will leave 1500 Harbor Boulevard in Weehawken at 12:00pm on June 30th, boarding at 11:30am.
 The cruise will last approximately two hours after it departs from Weehawken. Â
Buses will meet at Veterans Stadium and transport seniors to Weehawken and back to Bayonne after the cruise. Â Buses should be back in Bayonne by 3:30 p.m.

PSE&G Partners with NJ Board of Public Utilities to Raise Awareness about Resources
The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities has named June 6-10, 2022 Utility Assistance Week to call attention to programs available to help customers who are struggling to pay their utility bills. Utility payment assistance programs have expanded to include more customers at much higher income levels, including those who are behind on their bills for the first time.
“We continue to make every effort to work with customers who have fallen behind on their bills. We’re here to help,†said Jane Bergen, director of billing for PSE&G Customer Care. “We never want to disconnect a customer’s electric or gas service because of an inability to pay.â€

Awardees receive upwards of $25,000 to Expand Arts Education and Programming; Arts & Culture proven to Boost Local Economic Assets, Create Jobs, and Stimulate Growth Mayor Steven M. Fulop joins City Council members and the Arts and Culture Trust Fund Committee to announce the first round of critical grant funding through Jersey City’s Arts and Culture Trust Fund – a sustainable funding source directly benefiting local artists and arts organizations to help them grow and thrive. With this first allocation of funding, nearly $900,000 in total grants will provide significant support to 89 artists and arts organizations throughout Jersey City, including youth and community programming.
“Jersey City’s investment in the arts is an investment in our entire community. The short- and long-term social, educational, and economic impacts generate a wide range of opportunities for our residents and businesses,†said Mayor Fulop. “We recognized the need for sustainable funding early on, and Jersey City voters understood the magnitude of our burgeoning arts community, so it is especially exciting to award these much needed grants to so many talented artists and arts organizations so that they can further expand their positive influences in our society.â€
Investing in the arts has proven to significantly boost educational attainment, create jobs, attract further investments, stimulate the local economy, among many other communal benefits. The first round of Arts and Culture Trust Fund grants include opportunities for programming, arts education, and general operating support.
“The Educational Arts Team is honored to receive an award from the Jersey City Arts Relief Fund. This award will allow us to offer our Family Literacy and arts education programming to more children, specifically from low-income communities, who might not otherwise have access to the arts,†said grant recipient Cynthia Renta, Executive Director of The Educational Arts Team. “Through our evidence-based arts and education programming, developed over five decades of service to the Jersey City community, we bring joy, play, and healing to the community while also impacting students’ academic achievement and social emotional development.â€
The allocation of the State’s first-ever municipal Arts and Culture Trust Fund includes grants worth upwards of $25,000 in the following categories:  38 Program Grant Awards  8 Arts Education Grant Awards  23 Operating Grant Awards  20 Individual Artist Fellowship Grant Awards
“This is a historic moment for our arts community, one that we’ve been working towards for several years. To be able to announce these grants to help Jersey City’s arts programming and creative artists, ranging from novice to expert, is truly a milestone that brings us closer to seeing the City’s vision as a regional arts and culture hub become a reality. From our Artist in Residence initiative to the fast-growing Mural Arts Program to the Jersey City Art & Studio Tour (JCAST) and everything in between, Jersey City continues to expand a wide range of critical arts initiatives for the betterment of the entire community,†added Christine Goodman, Director of Jersey City’s Department of Cultural Affairs.
Mayor Fulop spent two years working closely with the Jersey City Arts Council to lobby state legislators to implement the mechanisms that would allow for long-term arts funding. Jersey City was first to take action when the state bill was signed into law by the Governor in December 2019, allowing municipalities to implement an Arts and Culture Trust Fund. “The Arts and Culture Trust Fund Committee is proud to support a diverse group of organizations, art programs, and artists,†said Angelica Sanchez, Arts and Culture Trust Fund Committee Member. “We believe supporting artists is important and necessary for all citizens.â€
“We formed the Jersey City Arts Council less than six years ago to address the need for support of the arts. The building of the Jersey City Arts, Culture Trust Fund has been a years-long collaboration between the Jersey City Arts Council, Mayor Fulop, the Office of Cultural Affairs, the arts community, and the people of this thriving City. It was quite moving to see the list of so many awardees who have been wholeheartedly contributing to our cultural landscape for years. The JCAC congratulates all awardees as well as the tireless Jersey City Arts and Culture Trust Fund Committee, and looks forward to the continued growth of this exceptional granting program,” said Heather Warfel Sandler, Co-founder of the Jersey City Arts Council.
The Arts Trust Funds received strong support from voters in November 2020 to implement an annual tax not to exceed two cents ($0.02) per one-hundred dollars of assessed property value. The Trust generates approximately $1 million in annual revenue for arts and cultural programs, which is quadruple the amount of what all of Hudson County receives from the State each year.
“We have worked hard in recent years with our local arts organizations and artists to establish Jersey City as a regional arts and culture destination, attracting investments, jobs, tourism, businesses, and so much more as our arts community continues to strengthen and prosper. We are also moving forward on major projects that will further build upon these efforts, including Centre Pompidou x Jersey City and the Loew’s Theatre historic renovations. I have no doubt that Jersey City will soon be the number one destination for arts, entertainment, employment, and so much more,†concluded Mayor Fulop.
Hudson County Community College honored graduating students from the Classes of 2020-22 who began their journeys in Hudson’s ESL Program during the “ESL to Graduation: A Celebration†event.
Hudson County Community College (HCCC) is one of the most ethnically diverse higher education institutions in the United States, with students who were born in 119 different countries and speak 29 different languages. Many are recent arrivals to the United States coping with unfamiliar surroundings, cultural differences, and a new language. The College’s commitment to students’ success often begins by helping them overcome language challenges through the Academic English as a Second Language (AESL) program.Â
On Tuesday evening, May 24, 2022, the College honored graduates from the Classes of 2020-22 who began their academic journeys in the HCCC ESL Program. The “ESL to Graduation: A Celebration†event was held at the HCCC Culinary Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City. The celebration featured welcoming remarks by Jed Palmer, Interim Director of ESL and Academic Foundations English (AFE); and “Tales of Immigration: Past and Present†presented by Linda Joy Miller, Associate Professor, ESL.Â
HCCC 2005 graduate Bahmini Ketheesan, Manager, SERV Finances and Accounts Group, Stevens Institute of Technology, spoke about “Student Success Stories: Pastâ€.Â
Simone Ebeid, a member of the Class of 2021 who earned her Associate in Science, Medical Sciences degree, and Elie Natuwila, Class of 2022 who will receive his Associate in Science, Criminal Justice degree at commencement ceremonies on May 26th, spoke on “Student Success Stories: Present.â€
HCCC President Dr. Christopher Reber, and Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Yeurys Pujols offered congratulatory remarks to the graduates who are receiving degrees in Business, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Culinary Arts, Digital Arts, Early Childhood Education, Engineering, English, Health Services, Hospitality Management, Human Services, Mathematics, Medical Assisting, Medical Coding, Nursing, Psychology, Radiography, Studio Arts, and several other disciplines.
“The Classes of 2020-22 include 497 students who came to the United States from all around the world and began their higher education journey in the HCCC ESL program,†Dr. Reber said. “Attendees hail from Algeria, Brazil, Colombia, The Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Ghana, Haiti, Honduras, India, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, and Senegal. We are enormously proud of them for the courage, determination, and persistence they demonstrated in navigating the challenges of learning to read, write, and speak a new language, and then continuing on to earn their associate degrees.â€
The HCCC Academic ESL program provides students with the high-level English language skills needed to study at a United States college or university, and to succeed and advance in careers. Classes focus on academic essay writing, grammar, reading, and speaking and listening skills. Overall, HCCC ESL students are from 45 different countries. Students enrolled in the Academic ESL program are eligible to apply for the Johanna Van Gandt (JVG) Scholarship for ESL Students that provides tuition support.
