Hudson County Improvement Authority to Have Mobile Paper Shredding

Mayor Mark A. Smith announced that the Hudson County Improvement Authority (HCIA) is holding a free, mobile paper shredding event in Stephen R. Gregg-Bayonne County Park on Saturday, April 27, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event will offer people the opportunity to bring personal, confidential, and sensitive papers to be shredded by the HCIA. This event is for residents’ personal documents, and not for businesses. Those bringing documents may watch as their documents are shredded, or they may drop off documents and depart. Smith said, “I would like to thank the HCIA for offering this shredding event again at a Bayonne location. I urge residents to take advantage of this useful service provided by the Hudson County Improvement Authority.”

Anyone carrying documents for the mobile shredding event should enter the park at 37th Street and Kennedy Boulevard, drive down to the parking lot, and look for the HCIA vehicles and equipment.

The HCIA offers this shredding program each year at various locations around Hudson County.

Earth Day 2013, Jersey City April 20th Liberty State Park

And a 5K Run/ Walk.
A wonderful way to celebrate the earth and have a great time in Jersey City on April 20th.

Boston Bombing Suspect Dzhokar Tsarnaev Sister Hudson County Resident

Boston suspect for website storyAccording to a report on TV station  New York’s Pix11, Boston Bombing Suspect Dzhokar Tsarnaev’s sister Alina Tsarnaev  lives in West New York.

Questioned by The FBI and West New York  police the suspects sister said she had not had contact with her brothers in years.

Pix `11’s report said that the investigators took her computer,  cell phones, plastic bags and other items. Dsarnaev’s sister and husband  gave the police permission to search their home and no search warrants were used to gain access to the home.

They are not suspected of any crime but rather gave up their computers and cell phones to collobrate the fact that they had nothing to do with her brothers and have not seen or talked to them in years saying “She remembered them being great people and has no idea what could of happened since she saw them.”

West New York Mayor Felix Rogues told the PIX reporter that West New York residents are not in any danger.

Registration Is Now Open for Courses at Hudson County Community College This Summer

 

 

hccc-logo300dpiJERSEY CITY, N.J. / April 19, 2013 — Hudson County Community College announces that registration is now open for summer term and fall semester courses.  Registration is currently underway at 25 Journal Square in Jersey City.

 

Classes for the Summer I and Summer II terms will begin on May 28 and July 15, respectively, and fall the semester will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at the Journal Square campus and North Hudson Higher Education Center. Classes are also being offered in off-campus locations including Bayonne and Kearny during the fall. In addition, several courses will be available in online format for the summer and fall terms.  originalsizeJosephGall,HCCCsnewTheaterArtsCoordinatorIn September 2012, Hudson got a little more artsy when professional playwright Joe Gallo brought Hudson County Community College to a new stage – or rather, brought the stage to HCCC.

 Gallo, whose plays have been performed in Hoboken, New York and other cities throughout the country, is a theater arts professor at HCCC who helped institute a new theater arts degree program. The new curriculum – which began in the 2012-2013 school year – is designed to provide students with a broad-based liberal arts education with core curriculum classes in theater that include Acting, Playwriting and Drama. Students who successfully complete the two-year program earn an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts – Theater, that prepares them to transfer to four-year colleges and universities where they can earn Bachelor of Arts degrees in theater and related programs.

 A theater professional – he’s a producer and Associate Artist at Mile Square Theater in Hoboken – Gallo earned an MFA in playwriting from Ohio University and his plays have been produced Off-Broadway, at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and at other theaters throughout the country. Gallo has taught Playwriting, Acting and other theater-related courses at the School of Visual Arts, Drew University and Kean University.

 Recently, Gallo spoke with Riverview Observer about how he initiated the new Theater Arts program and what prospective students can look forward to if they decide to enroll.

 RVO: Joe, can you share with our readers how the new theater arts program began?

JG: In 2007 HCCC hired to teach creative writing and because I have an MFA in playwriting, I was asked to revamp its Introduction to Acting class. I did that for the college and when I asked why the college doesn’t offer more theater classes, I was told, ‘because we don’t have a theater.’

Retired Wrestler Tony Santana of Jersey City Takes Life One Day at a Time

Tony Santana He was known as “Dr. Santana” because he always wore white when he entered the ring. Long retired from wrestling, Tony Santana still  dresses in his signature ‘whites’ when he’s out and about in his Jersey City neighborhood. 

 Born in Puerto Rico, Santana came to Jersey City when he was 13 and went to work at the Eisen Bros. button company in Manhattan’s garment district. (Being tall and burly, Santana passed for 18 to get the job.) He worked there 30 years, starting first in delivery and moving his way up to manager.  He work ed at Liz Claiborne in Jersey City and owned his own button company at 111 First Street.  After five years of being his own boss, Santana turned to bartending at Rolon’s Keyhole Bar on Bay Street, retiring in 2010.

POWERHOUSE IN JC FILTEREDThe Hudson & Manhattan RR Powerhouse in the downtown section of Jersey City stands amidst the million-dollar high-rises like a drab Cinderella before her Fairy Godmother turns her into a Princess. An icon of the golden age of Jersey City, the H&M Powerhouse that once harnessed electrical power to the Hudson Trains and Tunnel that connected New Jersey and New York before the PATH is now a deconstructed shell of her former self and – just like Cinderella – about to receive a makeover.

 

Located on Washington Boulevard between First and Bay Streets in downtown Jersey City, the H & M Powerhouse is in the city’s Warehouse Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.  Designed by architect John Oakman and his partner W. Powell Robins, the H & M Powerhouse began powering up H & M Railroad’s Hudson Tunnels subway line that connected New Jersey and New York on February 25, 1908. The Fourth Prinicpal for a Day Program in Jersey City Thursday, April 18th, 2013

Jersey City Public Schools –Area Business Leaders Reporting to the Principals’ Offices Next Thursday Morning

Prominent Jersey City business and community leaders are signing up to serve as Principals for a Day in the Jersey City Public Schools on Thursday, April 18, 2013. Last year 39 Principals for a Day made lasting impressions on the school children, teachers and administrators. The business and community leaders shared a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm. This year Jersey City business leaders  and community leaders are asked to do the same. Sign on to become a Principal for a Day.

In partnership with Jersey City developer Paul Silverman, the event marks the fourth Principal for a Day program in Jersey City. The Principals for a Day will spend their morning shadowing principals as they go about their daily routines in the JCPS.  In doing so, they will experience first- hand, the success stories and challenges facing the educators and students in the schools.

The participants and their principals will attend a luncheon in the latter part of June to turn the one-day experiences into long-term, productive partnerships with the schools that will support student achievement.

Make ‘Em Laugh- Stand Up Comedy at Art House Productions, Jersey City

It’s April and maybe you could use a few good laughs to cheer up those IRS blues. Then why not head over to Art House Productions in Jersey City on Sat, April 27 for a night of stand-up comedy featuring Mike Britt. Host Rich Kiamco, who runs the comedy nights at Art House Productions, promises it will be an evening of topical comedy not “Photoshop commentary”.

“The show is great,” Kiamco says. “This is almost our third year at Art House. The show has a following; it’s a good time. There’s always a headliner from ‘The Tonight Show’ or Comedy Central.”

Living in Hudson offers plenty of resources to inspire laughs, Kiamco says, especially when the comedy is based on natural disasters.
