H1N1 What you should do, summer-health1and what you should know this flu season!

With school back in session and flu season already upon us, Christ Hospital in  Jersey City, is urging all residents to prepare themselves and their families in response to an unpredictable flu season.

Since H1N1 first appeared in April 2009, medical professionals at Christ Hospital have been working with local and state health officials to learn more about the virus and on ways to keep their patients, employees, and community out of harm’s way. “Education is key,” says Christ Hospital’s Emergency Medicine Chairman Dr. Vijay Akkapeddi. “Prevention and awareness remain as the most effective ways in keeping healthy. People don’t realize it, but even touching a door knob is enough to transmit the virus and get someone sick.”   Continue reading Christ Hospital Offers Tips to Keep Healthy From Flu

sept-12-power-house

The 4th  Annual Powerhouse Arts Festival

 11:00am to 6:00pm.

The annual Powerhouse Arts District Neighborhood Association’s barbeque and crafts fair will have all the fine arts, nifty crafts, music, cheap beer and block-partying good times of last year, this year PDNA is adding a bunch more vendor spaces and hopefully some live art this year.

PDNA is seeking VOLUNTEERS for the day of the event. They will need people to help with set up, grill-manning (or woman-ing), beer pouring, etc. There will be free food and drink for all who volunteer, plus that special warm and fuzzy feeling that comes with contributing to a good cause. For more information or to sign up, email Jessica.

The festival is also a fundraiser for the Association. Much of our operating income for the year comes from the Fest – so tell your friends and come eat, drink, and be merry in service of the neighborhood.

“Gipsy Jazz” on Brunswick Street- Downtown, Jersey City

madame_gipsy20jazzDowntown Jersey City is where I was born, and raised, and Brunswick Street was a very important part of the Village community when I was growing up.

That is why as a homeowner in the village and Publisher of the River View Observer, I am excited to post this item from Rob Crow of JC Village- Thanks Rob!

(Sep 05, 2009) They call this style of music in Europe “Manouche”. In Jersey City, Mattias Gustafsson, co-owner of Madame Claude Cafe, and fellow musician Bryan Beninghove, call it “Gipsy Jazz”. As I sit with my eight year old daughter in my very own neighborhood on an absolutely perfect late summers evening, I would call it nothing short of astonishing.
