Hudson County Community College Awarded$2.97 Million from U.S. Department of Education

October 19, 2010, Jersey City, NJ – The United States Department of Education has awarded a $2.97 million grant to Hudson County Community College (HCCC). The College was selected for the award from the Title V – Hispanic-Serving Institutions competitive grants program titled “Building a 21st Century Community College.”

Hudson County Community College President Dr. Glen Gabert said the funding – which will be provided over a five-year period – will be dedicated to two major initiatives: (1) Expanding access and increasing student success and persistence through the establishment of a Center for Distance Education; and (2) strengthening the capacity of the College’s mathematics and technology programs. Christ Hospital School of Nursing Prepares for Fall Semester

– The Christ Hospital School of Nursing (SON) will be hosting its Fall Information Session on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at 5:00pm in the (SON) building located at 179 Palisade Avenue, Jersey City.  In cooperation with Hudson County Community College, the SON will be offering full-time day and part-time night divisions, as well as an accelerated LPN to RN program.  For questions or further information, contact the Christ Hospital (SON) at (201) 795-8360.

Hudson County Community College Provides Glimpse of New North Hudson Higher Education Center

Elected officials joined the College’s administrators in unveiling plans for the $28,165,000, 7-story, ‘complete campus under one roof’

The  College’s Vice President of the North Hudson Center and Student Affairs Dr. Paula P. Pando said that at seven stories and 92,250 square feet, the new North Hudson Center is the largest construction effort ever undertaken by the College. The College charged the architectural firm Rivardo Schnitzer Capazzi to design a building that is people-centered, environmentally conscious, technologically up-to-date, and capable of handling the College’s present and projected enrollment growth and its expansion of program offerings. (Hudson County Community College realized a 22% increase in enrollments in 2009-2010, the largest increase of any county college in New Jersey.) Construction on the steel-frame structure began in spring of 2009, and the anticipated opening date is spring 2011.”North Hudson Center will be a complete campus under one roof, and because we are the community’s College, it will also have spaces for a variety of College and community events,” Dr. Gabert stated. Alomar brings a wealth of experience as a performer, producer, and innovator in the music industry and is the first to hold this prestigious position in the College of Arts & Letters (CAL) at Stevens.

 JERSEY CITY, N.J. / September 1, 2010 – Although they are from very different walks of life, each of the four speakers slated to appear in the Hudson County Community College 2010-2011 Lecture Series has worked to improve life and has acted as inspiration for thousands.

The series begins on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 with the appearance of Dr. Terry O’Banion, Director of the Community College Leadership Program at Walden University.

HCCC rated in top 15% of all trade schools, colleges and universities throughout the USA for best education, value and welcome to military members, veterans and spouses

  JERSEY CITY, N.J. / August 24, 2010 – Hudson County Community College has learned that the College will be named to the “Military-Friendly Schools” List. The College was chosen from 7,000 institutions of higher education across the country to be included on the list, and the official designation will be made in September. Only 15% of all of the nation’s schools of higher education make the list.

HCCC Art Student-Produced Mural Unveiled at 25 Journal Square’s Student Lounge

On Wednesday, May 12, Hudson County Community College’s Fine Art Department and the Office of Student Activities held an unveiling ceremony of a 4′ x 18′ mural painted specifically for the Student Lounge at 25 Journal Square.

 In addition to the mural reception, the Fine Art Department had the students’ works on view in the Student Art Gallery on the fourth floor at 25 Journal Square.

Hudson County Community College to Present 2010 Heritage Award to Nadia Makar, Beloved Teacher and Mentor

 1043-052710-hccc3JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Union City science teacher Nadia Makar (center) received the Hudson County Community College 2010 Heritage Award during the College’s 32nd Annual Commencement ceremonies on Thursday, May 27 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. Hudson County Community College President Dr. Glen Gabert (left) and HCCC Trustee Katia Stack (right) presented the award to Ms. Makar.

Student Innovation Day -Steven’s Institute of Technology and Honeywell

honeywell-1On June 2nd, Honeywell and Stevens Institute of Technology hosted a Student Innovation Day 2010 for Jersey City middle school students. 
Stevens’ graduates, who have successfully used engineering and innovation to design relevant, high-quality products,urged students to think “outside the box” to solve problems and discover solutions to address everyday challenges. honeywell-no-2-jpegSome of the hands – on challenges included designing and building a shock-absorbing system to protect astronauts when they land on the moon. 

Present for Student Innovation Day was  William Hague, Director of Design and Construction, Honeywell and Greg Bartus and Henry Harms, engineering educators  from the Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education (CIESE), Stevens Institute of Technology and John Dennan and Patrick Conrad, Stevens graduates, whose innovations in engineering spark interest and enthusiasm in young students.
