Arthur’s Tavern Serves Delmonico Steaks with Old Hoboken Charm

by Sally Deering

In a town where almost every doorway on Washington Street leads to an eatery, Arthur’s Tavern on the corner of 3rd Street stands out as a Hoboken treasure – a throwback to the way the town looked back in the day with prices that are more than reasonable (a Delmonico hamburger for $5.95) and steaks and sides as yummy and comforting as your favorite dish on grandma’s table.

The tables decked out in red-checkered tablecloths first catch your attention as soon as you walk in the door. Then you notice the stained-glass lamps hanging from the hammered-tin ceiling. Add to that the mouth-watering aroma of sizzling Delmonico steaks and you immediately relax a little, ready to settle in for some hearty and delicious fare.  Three years ago in the frozen tundra of Siberia, a reindeer herder discovered the Holy Grail of prehistoric artifacts, a real, completely preserved baby mammoth christened Baby Lyuba. Since the discovery, Baby Lyuba’s star has risen faster than Lady Gaga’s – a full-color feature in National Geographic magazine, TV appearances and a national tour that brought her first to the Field Museum in Chicago and then to the Liberty Science Center (LSC) in Jersey City, where she takes center stage in their main exhibit, “Mammoths and Mastodons: Titans of the Ice Age.”

Stained-Glass Windows Find New Home at Holy Name Mausoleum In Jersey City

sacredheart_84_300_95Restored artwork preserves faith within Hudson County Community

Thirteen stained-glass windows will be unveiled in their new home at the Holy Name Mausoleum in Jersey City on Saturday, November 6th. These artifacts, which are valued over $525,000, were removed from Saint Boniface Parish Church and have undergone a rigorous restoration, uncovering the true beauty of their nineteenth century craftsmanship.

“These fragile artifacts represent how our community has expressed its faith over the years,” said Andrew Schafer, Executive Director, Catholic Cemeteries, Archdiocese of Newark. “While the stained-glass pieces have a significant monetary value, they hold an even stronger sacramental worth to the Catholic Church and its generation upon generation of followers in Hudson County.”
