Green, Textured Bike Lanes Roll Out in Jersey City

Jersey City is the first municipality in the state to receive this particular coating treatment

handlebars3JERSEY CITY—The biking community in Jersey City marked another watershed this week, as contractors began installing a new, highly visible green surface in bike lanes on busy streets. They are the first specially colored or textured bike lanes in the city, and among the first in the state.

Work on the surfacing began last Thursday, as city bike lane contractors Statewide Striping began laying down Endurablend, a mixture including polymer, fine gravel, and green dye, in pre-striped bike lanes along Christopher Columbus Drive. The surface is being sprayed through a honeycomb-patterned stencil, forming small hex shapes divided by thin lattice lines. The color emphasizes to cyclists and drivers that the lane is for bikes only, and the gravel is for traction, while the hex pattern is designed for better wear and drainage than solid coverings, according to Statewide representatives. Jersey City Police Officer Melvin Santiago Killed Responding to Armed Robbery at Jersey City Walgreens

Jersey City Mayor Fulop on the cause and death of Police Officer Melvin Santiago

“Today was a horrible day for Jersey City.  At 0409 hours, Jersey City Police responded to the Walgreen’s at the corner of Communipaw Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard on a call of an armed robbery.  The first responding officers were Officers Santiago and Martinez, who responded from Bergen and Lexington.  The actor fired at the marked police car, striking Officer Santiago – who was still inside the vehicle – in the head.  Officer Melvin Santiago was pronounced dead shortly after at the Jersey City Medical Center.  Additional responding officers returned fire at the actor, who was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.  The armed security guard at the Walgreen’s stated that the actor struck him and took his weapon, which police believe was the weapon used in the shooting.  The incident remains under active investigation.

It is a tragic situation when any officer is killed in the line of duty.  Melvin was an officer who represented everything one would want to see in a police officer.  I know the entire city’s thoughts and prayers are with the Santiago family during this difficult time and we mourn together.”
Further updates will be released by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office

Attorney Paul Fishman and former NBA player Jayson Williams all being at the same place seems highly unlikely. Unless the issue is prisoner reentry.

The topic of ex-offenders coming back into society was what brought the four men into the same space as they were all keynote speakers at the Prisoner Reentry: Breaking the Cycle conference held on April 17 at Saint Peters University in Jersey City.

The event, sponsored by various entities including the Jersey City

Employment and Training Office, Integrity House and Saint Peters University, is an extension of the policy goal of the new Employment and Training Office Director, former Governor Jim McGreevey, to help those coming out of jail to integrate back into society.

Williams, the onetime New Jersey Nets star, shared his powerful personal story of rebuilding his life after serving time in prison for several brushes with the law including the accidental shooting death of his limousine driver, Costas “Gus” Christofi, in 2002.
