Hip and Cozy Eatery Warms Up Paulus Hook Neighborhood

By Sally Deering

Nestled in the historic Paulus Hook section of downtown Jersey City, Amelia’s Bistro on Warren Street is a warm, welcoming and beautiful restaurant with a lovely menu. As soon as you enter the corner bistro, the vibe is welcoming and the attentive staff greets you at the door with a smile. Designed with an artful eye, the restaurant is reminiscent of the bistros in Paris with its muted gold walls, dark wood accents, white tablecloths and stained glass low-hanging lamps dimly lit over the bar and throughout the dining room.  Continue reading Amelia’s Bistro, Welcoming and Wow!

Inside the Lisbon Restaurant in Downtown Jersey City

The Paulus Hook section of Jersey City located downtown near Exchange Place is a mix of old and new brownstones and hi-rises, small and big businesses, and restaurants and bars tucked inside the nooks and crannies of this beautiful neighborhood. One charming and cozy bistro is the Lisbon Bar & Restaurant on York Street, a tiny gem of a restaurant that serves traditional Portuguese cuisine to its neighborhood clientele and regulars who have been dining at Lisbon since it first opened around the corner on Warren Street 20 years ago.

When the lease ran out on their space on Warren Street a few years ago, the Lisbon re-opened its doors around the corner on York. That seems to be the only big change, says Joe Cunha, Lisbon’s manager. The menu has pretty much stayed the same, traditional and modern Portuguese and Spanish cuisine featuring seafood, meat, poultry and pasta dishes using fresh ingredients and flavored with the spices of Portugal and Spain. Laico’s Restaurant Neighborhood Favorite for Over 30 Years

River View Observer reviews Laico’s Restaurant one of Hudson County’s favorite and Best Italian Restaurants
by Sally Deering

color-photo-of-laicos-restThirty-eight years ago, Louis and Felice Laico opened a neighborhood restaurant on Terhune Ave in Jersey City, where families shared a huge pizza pie, soda came in a pitcher and beer flowed from the tap. A humble family eatery serving delicious Italian cuisine to neighborhood regulars, professors at the local colleges and old-timers who shared colorful stories of Jersey City back in the day.

Although Louis and Felice have since passed on, their son Louis Laico, Jr, who worked side-by-side with his mom and dad, took over the restaurant, keeping that warm, ‘welcome-to-the-family’ ambience that invites you in as soon as you enter the door. Laico family members wait tables and bartend – Louis’s brother-in-law Jimmy Wolowitz is bar manager and Louis’ wife Gloria sometimes fills in when they need a hostess.
