COVID-19 UPDATE 6/3/2020

Mayor Davis has directed OEM to keep residents informed on all the latest information related to this health emergency.

Mayor Davis has informed us that a 50yr old male has died from Coronavirus-related illness.  The death is the 72nd Bayonne resident to die since the health emergency began.  Mayor Davis extends his sympathy to the family of this gentleman, on behalf of all Bayonne.

Bayonne Residents CURRENTLY Positive – 611*

  • The number above reflects only the Bayonne residents that are CURRENTLY COVID-19 Positive.  We have 472 Bayonne residents that are considered recovered.  Recovered patients, according to the CDC, no longer have to isolate or be reported.  Our numbers of current residents that are COVID positive continues to decline, even as testing opportunities have increased.

TESTING:  There are numerous options for COVID-19 or Anitbody testing in Bayonne.  The BMC continues testing at Veterans Stadium for people with appointments.  Currently, widespread testing of senior congregate housing is taking place in Bayonne for all seniors (with or without symptoms). 

RECYCLING: Alternate recycling has ended.  This week all garbage/recycling is on normal pickup schedules.

GOVERNOR’S DIRECTIVES: There have been many changes to the Directives that have been in place since March. Phase 2 of reopening begins on 6/15.  Outdoor restaurant dining and all non-essential in person retail.  On 6/22, Barber shops and hair salons can reopen.  Please see the Governor’s Social Media or go to www.covid19.nj.gov for details. 

MASKS:  There is no mandate by the State of New Jersey or the City of Bayonne that requires healthy individuals to wear a mask when outdoors.  Masks must be worn when in stores or outdoors when social distancing is not possible.

Hudson County Community College to Host Seventh Annual ‘Girls in Technology’ Symposium Online

Area middle and high school young women, and their teachers and counselors, are encouraged to attend the June 4 virtual event; first 200 attendees  will receive special gifts.  

– The Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development invites young women, teachers and counselors from Hudson County middle and high schools to participate in the College’s Seventh Annual “Girls in Technology” symposium on Thursday, June 4, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.  The first 200 attendees will receive a free backpack and LED light tumbler.

The interactive, virtual event will feature discussions about the exciting and rewarding Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) educational and career opportunities for women working in these fields, as well as live demonstrations. Sponsors for this year’s event include Eastern Millwork, Inc., SILVERMAN, University of Phoenix, Liberty Savings Federal Credit Union, Harborside Sport & Spine, and MAST Construction Services, Inc.

The program will open with welcoming remarks by HCCC Dean of Continuing Education and Workforce Development Lori Margolin.  The event will then proceed to the interactive panel discussion, “A Day in the Life of Women in STEM,” moderated by HCCC Executive Director of Online Learning Archana Bhandari, and featuring HCCC Chief Information Officer Patricia Clay; WPMaster.me Web Developer Kate Gilbert; General Dynamics Mission Systems Advanced Optics Engineer Dr. Bianca Jackson; Princeton University Software Application Services Office of Information Technology Associate Director Sushma Mendu; and Ernst & Young, LLP Global Director of Information Security Maureen Slipek. The symposium will conclude with STEM demonstrations conducted by HCCC Professor Dr. Clive Li.

All registrants will receive a STEM educational resource guide containing scholarship information, activity websites, and video demonstrations from volunteering New Jersey City University Educational Technology doctoral candidates.

8,000 Unit Development Site will be 35% Affordable Housing, Reshaping West Side of Jersey City

JERSEY CITY – Mayor Steven M. Fulop, the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency (JCRA), and the Department of Housing, Economic Development and Commerce (HEDC) announce an agreement for construction of the first phase of Bayfront, the largest mixed-income development site in the region. 

The city acquired the 100-acre Bayfront property from Honeywell Corporation in 2018 for $100 million with the city stating at the time a reason for the acquisition is to meet the goal of increasing the on-site affordable housing requirements from 5%, that was previously stipulated in the redevelopment plan, to a new goal of 35% with the city controlling the property.

Department of Veterans Affairs Expansion of Health Care Services

Of interest to Hudson County Veterans and surrounding areas

VA is moving forward with a phased approach for expanding select services that were put on hold due to the coronavirus at medical facilities across the country. Our goal is to care for Veterans who have the greatest clinical need while ensuring a safe environment for both employees and Veterans.

VA facilities may not expand to a full spectrum of care immediately. In resuming services, VA facilities will consider the unique circumstances of each state and local government, environmental safety preparedness, and clinical risk assessments to assure the safest possible environment. 

Due to the trend of COVID-19 cases in Southwest Michigan still flattening,  our facility is not yet ready to expand services. Facilities selected as lead sites were chosen because they align with VA, federal, state, and local guidance and meet the White House “Guidelines for Opening Up America” gating criteria for expanding services. Gating criteria are requirements that each region or state should meet before reintroducing select services, such as a decline in COVID-19 cases during a 14-day period.

Once the Battle Creek VA Medical Center has met the gating criteria, it will be phased into VA’s plan for expanding care. In the meantime, we will benefit from data, lessons learned, and best practices from the lead sites’ experiences.

Based on current data, we expect to slowly begin to expand services on June 15, 2020.  Please note that expanded services will be by appointment. Please call to make an appointment before visiting. The preferred method of care until we meet criteria is using virtual care when possible.

PAVING: Bayonne’s road resurfacing project continues this week.  Broadway from 1st to 3rd Street will be milled and paved.  Please obey all posted NO PARKING signs.  Cars not moved in time will be towed at owner’s expense.  Residents that need to use cars in this area during work hours should move them prior (This includes Marion Court).

Bayonne Residents CURRENTLY Positive – 629*

  • The number above reflects only the Bayonne residents that are CURRENTLY COVID-19 Positive.  We have 441 Bayonne residents that are considered recovered.  Recovered patients, according to the CDC, no longer have to isolate or be reported.  Testing has increased significantly, and our current positive population continues to decrease.

TESTING:  The Bayonne Medical Center continues to perform testing for COVID-19 at Veterans Stadium each weekday.  Your physician can make you an appointment for this testing.  Rite-Aid at 1097 Broadway is also performing COVID-19 testing.  This testing is free and is open to anyone (regardless if you have symptoms or not).  Go to riteaid.com to make an appointment.  CityMD is doing Antibody testing. BMC: The Bayonne Medical Center has advised us that they currently have only 3 COVID Positive Bayonne residents as inpatients, and only 6 total COVID Positive patients in total that are currently inpatients. These numbers haven’t been seen since middle of March.

PARKING: Beginning Monday, June 1st, all temporary reserved parking spaces reserved for food pick up will be eliminated.  Normal parking rules/regulations are back in effect.  Residential Zone parking regulations remain suspended until further notice.

MAYOR’S MESSAGING: The Mayor released a robocall yesterday indicating that all playgrounds are now OPEN, and more activities and businesses are reopening.  As the Governor is making changes to Executive Orders on a daily basis, please go to Governor Murphy’s Twitter or Facebook page or see covid19.nj.gov for more details.

Jersey City to Expand Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza

Will Facilitate More Outdoor Seating for Restaurants; More Open Space Residents; 40 Restaurants Citywide Already Applied for More Outdoor Café Seating

Mayor Steven M. Fulop announces the expansion of the Newark Ave Pedestrian Mall to extend outdoor restaurant seating along “Restaurant Row” and safe pedestrian accessibility in an effort to encourage best practices for social distancing during the current global COVID-19 pandemic, as well as support its financially troubled restaurant community. 

 

With the expectation that once the State of NJ lifts restrictions on restaurants they will still include additional rules with limited indoor seating, the city has set a process to expand outdoor seating for restaurants. Since Jersey City announced the application process for more outdoor restaurant seating, the city has already had nearly 40 restaurants apply.

The latest figures for Thursday, May 28, 2020 showing yet another decline in COVID-19 cases very good news for the Bayonne

Mayor Davis has informed us that an 81yr old male has passed away, marking the 71st fatality in Bayonne related to the Coronavirus.  Mayor Davis extends his condolences, on behalf of all Bayonne, to the family of this man.
