Residents Following Earthquake

Mayor Mark A. Smith of Bayonne and Assemblyman Jason O’Donnell announced that their offices will make telephones available for local Filipino-Americans to contact their relatives at home following the earthquake that struck the central Philippines on February 6. The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.9 on the Richter scale, and caused mudslides in the country.

Smith said, “During this time of crisis in the Philippines, many residents have been concerned about the safety of their family members in that country. Some have had difficulty getting in touch with them. At both City Hall and the State Assembly office in Bayonne, we will make phones available to call the Philippines until further notice. Assemblyman O’Donnell and I want to help our Filipino-American residents stay in touch with their families until the situation improves.”

O’Donnell said, “I am eager to help my Filipino-American constituents at this stressful time. The recent earthquake has disrupted some communication lines. My office is happy to provide additional channels of communication to the Philippines.”

The NY/NJ Giants Win Fourth Super Bowl Defeating New England Patriots 21-17

 

The New York/ New Jersey Giants (Can we start calling them the NY/ NJ Giants)  have won  Super Bowl XLVI their fourth Super Bowl win defeating the New England Patriots again 21-17. The Giants also played New England in 2008 Super Bowl XLII winning 17- 14. Eli Manning became this years most valuable player. Hudson County shook with excitment after the Giants win of Super Bowl XLVI and the naming of Manning as MVP. Manning lives in Hoboken, New Jersey.

The Giants have also won the Super Bowl in the years 1987, 1991 and 2008.

Can we expect in next years NFL Super Bowl another match -up between The NY/NJ Giants and New England? If so it will certainly be a grudge match according to Patriot fans.

Jersey City-American Heart Month and National Wear Red Day for Women Friday, February 3rd

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. This event was in support of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women® movement to raise awareness of the importance for women to make the choice to take charge of their heart health and reduce the risk of heart disease.

City, Board of Education, and Community Groups Plan Events at Bayonne Museum

Mayor Mark A. Smith announced that the City of Bayonne, the Bayonne Board of Education, and various community groups are working together to establish a calendar of events at the Bayonne Community Museum. Mayor Smith said, “After several years of renovations, the building is ready to host a variety of events and serve several purposes. As the owner of the building, the City of Bayonne looks forward to offering the facility to interested parties for exhibits, performances, art shows, guest speakers, contests, awards dinners, receptions, public meetings, and other special events. The building may also be available as a catering facility.” Smith continued, “The City of Bayonne will continue to work with the Bayonne Community Museum, Inc, a private, non-profit corporation, to enable it to use the building for its own exhibits and activities. In the years ahead, visitors to the building will be able to enjoy viewing museum exhibits while also enjoying various cultural events at the same time. Jonathan Singer’s “Botanica Magnifica” Exhibit Opens on January 28th at the New Jersey State Museum

“Open your eyes and you will see the beauty from within”, these are the words that come to mind, as I explain the photographs of Jonathan Singer. Described as a “force of nature” Singer brings to life “rare exotic flowers and plants” using photography and his extraordinary vision; the compilation of the two brings to fruition photographs which bring to mind the works of Rembrandt.

 On January 28th the public will have the opportunity to view the one of a kind photographs by Jonathan Singer. The exhibit “Botanica Magnifica” will be presented in two parts. “Part One” is on view January 28 through April 15, and “Part Two” will be on view April 21 through August 26 at the New Jersey State Museum. On Tuesday evening January 25th, Nick Jonas made his debut as Pierrepont Finch in ” How to Succeed in Business” at the Hirschefeld Theater in Manhattan. Also debuting last night was Michael Urie from “Ugly Betty” as Bud Frump.

Newark Bears Sign Two New Coaches- Ralph Citarella and Ken “Obie” Oberkfell

A native of New Jersey and former Major League pitcher of Saint Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox, Ralph Citarella joins the new Newark Bears Professional Team as their pitching coach for the 2012 season. Mr. Citarella has already begun to train and assist the Bears with player development and is preparing for spring tryouts in April.

Ken “Obie” Oberkfell, former 2011 Bench Coach for the New York Mets, will be joining the New Newark Bears Professional Baseball Team coaching staff for their 2012 season. Obie played in the Major Leagues for 16 years. He played on the 1982 World Series Championship for St. Louis Cardinals. In 2005, he was awarded Manager of the year by Baseball America.

Citerella and Oberkfell will be making their first appearance during the Bears annual Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball on Saturday, February 18th at the Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium located at 450 Broad Street, Newark, NJ 07102.
