Jersey City to Showcase Its Newest Community Gardens with the 2012 Adopt-A-Lot Garden Tour

JERSEY CITY – Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy , the Division of City Planning in partnership with several community organizations are hosting the 2012 “Growing Together”: Adopt-A-Lot Community Garden Tour from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2012.

The shuttle bus will be leaving the Bright Street Community Garden, located on Bright and Grove Sts., at 10:00 a.m. for the tour. Pre-registration is encouraged as seats are limited. To register, please call Ivan Freire at 201-547-4513 or email freirei@jcnj.org

Jersey City to Celebrate the Annual Polish Festival

 As part of the City’s ‘Tapestry of Nations’ Ethnic Festival Series

JERSEY CITY – Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy, the Municipal Council and the Division of Cultural Affairs proudly announce the annual Polish Festival which will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 26th 2012 on Washington Street, between Sussex and Grand streets.

“The greatness of this country, especially our city, is largely attributed to the contributions that immigrants have made and continue to make,” said Mayor Healy. “Jersey City was densely populated by Polish immigrants and their descendents, many of whom worked at the nearby Colgate Palmolive Soap Factory and other shops located in the old First Ward of Jersey City. Bark in the Park: FUNDRAISER

Registration for Bark in the Park walkers is now open! Walkers can sign up individually, form teams, or fundraise as a “virtual walker” if you cannot attend the event.

Their   goal this year is to raise $40,000–which Liberty Humane Society   is confident  their supporters can help them achieve.

The initial registration fee is $25 a for single walker and $35 for a human plus one dog.

Why stop there? If at least 200 participants each raise a total of $200, LHS will already be at their goal! CD Release for David W. Jacobsen’s Newest Album -Not What I Meant at Lampost Bar & Grille, Jersey City

Singer/songwriter David W. Jacobsen’s CD release for his newest album, Not What I Meant, will be on August 25th at the Lamp Post in Jersey City. The album contains humorous and reflective songs about failing to communicate. It deals with misunderstandings and their lighthearted or heartbreaking repercussions.

Lyrics play on miscommunications where one party and the other are on different pages and sometimes at least one of the two is unaware of this discrepancy.

Musically, it is predominated by melodic acoustic guitars accompanied by a rhythm section and occasional mandolin.

Hudson Regional Health to Use Helicopter for Mosquito Control on Friday, August 24

The Hudson Regional Health Commission has advised Bayonne residents that it will be applying mosquito control larvicides by helicopter flying at low altitudes over Hudson County on Friday, August 24. In the event of inclement weather or other flight restrictions, the flight would be rescheduled for the next available date.

Helicopter application sites in Bayonne include the following:

1) Bayonne Golf Club – the marshes along the water at the northeastern point of the golf course

2) The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor (the former Military Ocean Terminal) – the wooded area at the western end between Route 440, the access road, and Centre Street

3) Northwestern corner of Bayonne – area west of Sunset Avenue from 54th Street to 56th Street; the area between the New Jersey Turnpike and Route 440; the area within the Turnpike, Route 440, and the Conrail line; and the area on the North side of the Conrail line and the Eastern side of the Route 440 ramp

 The 17-Acre Municipal Park will Transform Brownfields into Much- Needed Park Space in the Morris Canal Neighborhood

JERSEY CITY – Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy, the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency (JCRA), Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Regional Administrator Judith Enck and other city and local officials broke ground at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 on the Berry Lane Park project located at 1000 Garfield Ave., Jersey City in the Morris Canal neighborhood.

Berry Lane Park will rejuvenate the Morris Canal neighborhood with a nine percent increase of usable space in Jersey City by transforming more than 17 acres of property – including former rail yards, junk yards, auto repair shops, industrial facilities, and warehouses – into the largest municipally-owned park in the City.

Mayor Healy. “With sixty percent of the residents in the immediate area being children under the age of 18, Berry Lane Park will provide the space necessary for recreation and community involvement. The transformation of these fallow and deserted properties will also rid the area of an eyesore and contamination, and will make this neighborhood a more enjoyable place to live.”
