Whereas, Women have formally been a part of the United States Armed Forces since the establishment of the Army Nurse Corps in 1901, but have informally served since the inception of our nation’s military; and

Whereas, Whether disguised as male soldiers during the American Revolution and Civil War, as nurses in World Wars I and II, or as combat helicopter pilots in Afghanistan, women have served honorably and with valor; and

Whereas, Today, women constitute approximately 15 percent of the military personnel on active duty; and

Historic Landmark Loew’s Theatre to FINALLY Move Forward with Renovation & New Management

City of Jersey City & Friends of Loew’s Community Group to Jointly Issue RFP for New Operator with International Reach; Ends Years of Litigation and Opens New Chapter for Journal Square 

Following decades of slow progress, Mayor Steven M. Fulop joins the Friends of Loew’s (FOL) to announce a new joint endeavor for an exciting new chapter at the iconic Loew’s Theatre in Journal Square to restore and maximize the historic landmark’s potential.  City officials, in cooperation with FOL, are issuing a request for proposals (RFP) with the goal of boosting programming as well as supporting significant restoration and improvement of the theatre, listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places.

ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK ANNOUNCES PHASE TWO DIRECTIVES ALLOWING PUBLIC WEEKDAY MASSES WITH RESTRICTIONS STARTING JUNE 15

New “Welcome Back” Video Offers Guidelines on What to Expect

NEWARK â€”Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R, Archbishop of Newark, announced this week that Phase Two of the Directives for Re-Opening Churches has been approved as part of the ongoing, three-phase reopening process for parishes throughout the Archdiocese.

Beginning on Monday, June 15, 2020, Archdiocesan parishes, which already have been reopened for private prayer, will now be reopened for the celebration of public weekday Masses,as well as Funerals, Baptisms, and Weddings. 

As part of Phase Two, the following protocols will be observed:

  • It is the responsibility and decision of each pastor to determine the process and timing for safe reopening weekday public Mass for their local parish. Parishioners are encouraged to contact their local parishes or visit their local parish website for more information.
  • Based on state public official guidelines, the maximum number of participants for public Masses, Funerals, Baptisms, and Weddings is now set at 25% of the church’s capacity or 50 participants in total, whichever is less.
  • All directives from Phase One remain in force including social distancing, wearing of facemasks, and sanitizing. 
  • Due to social distancing protocols, services should take place in church, not small chapels.

The Archdiocese has produced a “Welcome Back” video, available in English and Spanish, to inform parishioners about what to expect as they prepare to return to Mass.  

“As we slowly resume public Mass, it is important that we work together to allow for a safe and dignified parish environment for all,” said Cardinal Tobin. “Out of love and respect for human life and health, let us act responsibly and adhere to the guidelines provided by the Archdiocese and our local parishes.”

Cardinal Tobin continues to dispense the faithful from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. Parishes will continue to livestream Mass so that those unable to attend may maintain a spiritual connection with their local parish.

“If you are ill or at higher risk for illness, or if attending public Mass in the current climate brings you anxiety, please be at peace and remain at home,” Cardinal Tobin said.

The Archdiocese will continue to monitor the expert guidance of public health officials and federal and state public officials, who have cautioned not to rush into reopening churches to the faithful before manageable safety protocols can be put in place. The Archdiocese remains committed to the health and wellbeing of its clergy and staff, the faithful, and the public.

Phase Three of the Directives for Re-Opening Churches is expected to commence on Sunday, June 21, 2020, and is contingent upon any further developments or guidance from health and state public officials.  Phase Three continues the dispensation from the Sunday obligation to attend Mass and extends the celebration of public Mass to Sundays with the observance of all directives and protocols on social distancing, wearing of facemasks and sanitizing. This includes no more than 50% of the total seating capacity of the church permitted for a liturgy.  Additional information will be announced.

Bayonne Residents CURRENTLY Positive – 526*

  • The number above reflects only the Bayonne residents that are CURRENTLY COVID-19 Positive.  We have 569 Bayonne residents that are considered recovered.  Recovered patients, according to the CDC, no longer have to isolate or be reported.  We are continuing to see a steady decline in current positive residents in the city.

GOVERNOR’S DIRECTIVES: We are all under the governance of the Executive Orders that are coming from the Governor.  As of late, there have been many changes to these orders that affect each of us.  Please go to www.covid19.nj.gov or see the Governor’s social media for the latest information.

TESTING:  There are numerous options for COVID-19 or Anitbody testing in Bayonne.  Dial 2-1-1 or go to www.covid19.nj.gov for any/all testing sites throughout the state of NJ.  Testing at Veterans Stadium has ENDED.  Anyone getting an appointment for a test by a Bayonne physician by the Bayonne Medical Center, will be tested on their property.  The BMC is also testing senior citizens at all the various senior congregate housing in the city.

MASKS:  There is no mandate by the State of New Jersey or the City of Bayonne that requires healthy individuals to wear a mask when outdoors.  Masks must be worn when in stores.

Mayor Bhalla and Mayor Fulop Announce Pursuit of Combined Hoboken-Jersey City Bike Share Program

JERSEY CITY – Hoboken Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla and Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop today announced a partnership to pursue a combined bike share program for the Cities of Jersey City and Hoboken. Both cities have committed to selecting the same bike share company, will release a request for proposal (RFP) from interested companies, and are expected to roll out a bike share program together later this year.

“Both Hoboken and Jersey City are leaders in advancing alternative transportation options, and we are thrilled to partner together to utilize the same regional bike share program for our cities,” said Mayor Bhalla and Mayor Fulop. “Now, more than ever, a greater number of people are relying on shared transportation for essential services, employment, and more, and a regional approach will substantially improve the quality of life for all of our residents. And, as our communities continue to adapt to COVID-19, this coordinated effort will provide residents and visitors with healthy, socially distanced alternatives to mass transit.”

By choosing one bike share company for both cities, Mayor Bhalla and Mayor Fulop seek to achieve greater regional connectivity and mobility within both cities, making it easier for residents and visitors to travel within the two communities. A number of residents within Hoboken and Jersey City regularly commute to and from both cities, and a regional bike share option will provide easier access to employment opportunities and improve both cities regional economies.

A regional bike share company will also help advance safer, alternative transportation options, a central component of both cities’ Vision Zero campaigns to eliminate pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries within 10 years or less. Jersey City and Hoboken are two of the most bike-friendly communities in New Jersey, with a combined 75 miles of protected bike lanes, conventional bike lanes, and shared lanes.

Currently, the City of Hoboken utilizes Jersey Bike, while Jersey City uses Citi Bike.

Bayonne power in the park peaceful demonstration for george floyd

On Sunday June 7, 2020 a Bayonne group Black in Bayonne organized Power in the Park a peaceful demonstration against the killing of George Floyd an unarmed African-American man who was killed in Minneapolis when police officer Derek Chauvin held his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8:46 seconds.

Black in Bayonne organized the event to meet at the Gazebo in Stephen Greg Park at 1pm our River View Observer photographer was there at the beginning of the event and took the following photos.

The event was planned to remember George Floyd and to also encourage voter registration for the upcoming Presidential election in November 2020. Including at the event was an Advocacy Station for voter registration and to join the NAACP there was also a Yoga Station for those that attended.

We will post more photos as they are sent to us of the rest of the day including the mark to the flag pole in Bayonne and the 8:46 minute silent tribute to Mr. Floyd.

The program will be in conjunction with AeroFarms, the world leader in vertical farming, and the World Economic Forum (WEF) who recently selected Jersey City as their first partner in the Healthy Cities and Communities 2030 Initiatives.
