JERSEY CITY – The Official Inauguration of Mayor Steven M. Fulop, the 49th Mayor of Jersey City, will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2013 outside of City Hall, 280 Grove Street in a public celebration that invites residents to participate in the event.
Steven_Fulop_Ward_E_Councilman_in_Jersey_City_New_Jersey_circa_2012Mayor-Elect Fulop chose an Inauguration format similar to that of Mayor Thomas Smith in the 1970s in the hope of bringing the people back to City Hall to be part of the ceremony and part of the civic process.
“We believe that government should be responsive and should work for the people, which is why we chose to break with tradition and have our Inaugural ceremony at City Hall and after the work hours, so as many people could participate as possible,” said Mayor-Elect Fulop. “The Inauguration is the first step in the process of bringing change to city government and we want the residents of Jersey City to be with us each step of the way.”
At 6 p.m., Mayor Fulop will be sworn in by the Honorable Katharine S. Hayden, U.S. District Court Judge for the District of New Jersey. Mayor Fulop will then deliver his Inaugural Address and outline his administration’s vision and goals. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and U.S. Senator Robert Menendez will deliver remarks. The nine City Council members will also be sworn in during the ceremony.
The block party celebration, which is free and open to the public, will take place between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. and will include a performance by ELEW, who has performed for President Barack Obama at the White House, as well as local Jersey City bands, food vendors, and much more. Residents are encouraged to participate in the festivities and welcome their new Mayor and City Council. The block party celebration is not paid for with taxpayer dollars, but is paid for by the Election Fund of Steven Fulop. Continue reading Official Inauguration Ceremony For Mayor Steven M. Mayor Jerramiah Healy and Mayor-Elect Steve Fulop with Jersey City Council members and other dignitaries prepare to break ground on the 100 Steps Project

JERSEY CITY — Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy, and Mayor-Elect Steve Fulop and members of the Municipal Council, and other city officials broke ground  today, on the 100 Steps Project, at the foot of Mountain Road and Paterson Plank Road.

The 100 Steps project is a restoration of the original “Franklin Street Steps” which were built more than a century ago and torn down in the 1990s.

“The new stairs will provide easier access between the Jersey City Heights and the Hoboken Light Rail Station,” said Mayor Healy. “We are pleased to break ground on this project and hope to have the stairs open to the public by the early fall.”

This project involves the construction of a structural steel stairway descending from Franklin Street to Mountain Road at 100 Paterson Plank road, where the Cliff Condominium complex is located. The Riverview Neighborhood Association was a key advocate for the project.

The 100 Steps stairway will be supported by piles to bedrock; hence the drilling rig at the site.

The project generally consists of a metal stairway with open grate treads on concrete piers, some concrete curb and sidewalk at the approaches, chain link fence, decorative lights, landscaping and signage.

fERMIN MENDOZA PROJECT PHOTO FOR SIDEBAR
Meghan Baxter of Oklahoma

A year ago, artist Fermin Mendoza of West New York decided he would paint a portrait every day of people he reached out to in person and on the Internet. Taking their pictures or having them email their pics, Mendoza used the photos as the basis for a series of portraits – 183 to be exact – in the project he calls “artists/models/others” opening this week at LITM Bar, Restaurant, Art & Video Gallery on Newark Avenue in Jersey City. Kathryn Budinich Transforms her Jersey City One-Family into Supper Club

By Sally Deering

15 fox place inside dining roomLike many other houses in the Marion Section of Jersey City (west of Journal Square) Kathryn Budinich’s humble little home has a screen door, cozy rooms and a backyard – and that’s about all it has in common with the other houses on the block.

In 1999, Budinich, her husband Richie and son Mark transformed the family’s modest one-family into an exclusive dining club where Budinich and her staff, including her long-time friend Mary Lou Roche serve guests in two floors of rooms decorated in Victoriana frills, figurines and frou-frou and formal table-settings in crystal and porcelain. The lighting is low, intimate and perfect for the six-course dinner Budinich serves over the course of three luxurious hours.

A self-taught chef, Budinich learned to make Italian dishes and desserts listening to her mother, aunts and neighbors who brought in suppers when Budinich and her family worked the feasts sponsored by Our Lady of Mt. Carmel church and school their children attended. Years later, Budinich opened Word of Mouth caterers and in 1999 she turned her 15 Fox Place home into a supper club. Fourteen years later, business is so good customers have to make reservations two months in advance and Budinich only opens Friday, Saturday and one other night during the week. She also had to move out of her home to accommodate the demand for reservations.  Continue reading 15 Fox Place in Jersey City Puts the Home in Home Cooking
