Local Author Takes on New Jersey Governor’s Political Career “Ruthless Ambition: The Rise and Fall of Chris Christie” in Stores Now

 By Ricardo Kaulessar

Ruthless Ambition Manzo“I have heard enough fiction from Mr. Manzo, I don’t need to read his book too.”

If it’s possible for Governor Chris Christie to offer a book review, then he did so at a recent press conference in Camden when asked about “Ruthless Ambition: The Rise and Fall of Chris Christie,” the new book by former New Jersey State Assemblyman Louis Manzo, which can be seen as a nonfiction work that tells a story that’s stranger than fiction. Green, Textured Bike Lanes Roll Out in Jersey City

Jersey City is the first municipality in the state to receive this particular coating treatment

handlebars3JERSEY CITY—The biking community in Jersey City marked another watershed this week, as contractors began installing a new, highly visible green surface in bike lanes on busy streets. They are the first specially colored or textured bike lanes in the city, and among the first in the state.

Work on the surfacing began last Thursday, as city bike lane contractors Statewide Striping began laying down Endurablend, a mixture including polymer, fine gravel, and green dye, in pre-striped bike lanes along Christopher Columbus Drive. The surface is being sprayed through a honeycomb-patterned stencil, forming small hex shapes divided by thin lattice lines. The color emphasizes to cyclists and drivers that the lane is for bikes only, and the gravel is for traction, while the hex pattern is designed for better wear and drainage than solid coverings, according to Statewide representatives. Archbishop Hebda, members of the clergy, to Kathy and Al McBride, Melvin’s brother Alex, all of his family and friends that are here today.  On behalf of the City of Jersey City and the Jersey City Police Department, I offer to you our deepest condolences.

Melvin Santiago was everything we would want in a police officer. He was hard working and conscientious, good and courageous, strong and considerate. To quote the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C., “It was not how these officers died that made them heroes; it is how they lived.”

Melvin had always wanted to be a police officer.  I’ve been told that as a boy he’d travel with his uncle to the precinct to learn about the JC Police Department. Continue reading Eulogy for Jersey City Police Officer Melvin Santiago by Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop July, 18, 2014

Update on Investigation into Shooting Death of Jersey City Police Officer Melvin Santiago

OFFICER MELVIN SANTIAGO
Jersey City Police Officer
Melvin Santiago
While the incident still remains under active investigation, Mayor Steven M. Fulop released the following information:
• At 0409 hours, Jersey City Police responded to the Walgreens at the corner of Communipaw Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard on a call of an armed robbery.
• The actor has been identified as Lawrence Campbell, 27, of Grant Avenue.
• Lawrence Campbell entered the Walgreens asked the security officer directions to purchase a greeting card. Campbell proceeded in that direction, left the store and circled back.
• Campbell, who had a knife, then assaulted the security officer, taking his weapon.
• Campbell did not rob or attempt to rob the Walgreens, but proceeded to wait for the Police Department to arrive – approximately four minutes.
• Surveillance cameras show Campbell walking outside and speaking to a witness, at which time he apologized for his conduct in Walgreens and told the witness to watch
the news he is going to be famous.
• The first marked vehicle arrived at the scene with Officers Santiago and Martinez.
Campbell approached the police vehicle at close range and fired into the vehicle with the door open striking Officer Melvin Santiago in the head. He then fired three more times at a second marked police car striking the windshield, in attempt to kill two more officers.
• Officers in the subsequent car and first car returned fire, striking Campbell and killing him.
• During the course of the investigation, police identified Lawrence Campbell as one of three suspects wanted in connection with a prior homicide in Jersey City.
