I want to thank the entire City Council for voting 9-0 last night to
authorize the use of eminent domain for the direct purchase of land to double the size of the Southwest Park. This authorization provides the City with a valuable negotiating tool and will ensure that the property can be acquired for a price fair to both Academy Bus and the City of Hoboken. I also want to thank the City Council for their unanimous support for our application for Green Acres funding, which together with our Open Space Trust Fund, will enable us to acquire this property without any impact on our municipal taxes. Hoboken Mayor Zimmer letter to Residents Regarding the Southwest Park

Dear Residents,
Tonight the City Council will consider an important vote to authorize the use of eminent domain to acquire the 2nd acre of property for expansion of the Southwest Park and for the application to Green Acres for a grant to buy the land.
Since all of Hoboken is concerned about traffic, open space, overdevelopment, and taxes, I am writing to provide some information on this important project because unfortunately, Academy Bus has chosen to completely misrepresent the facts surrounding this issue. Here’s some information for you to consider:
Park funding is available with no tax increase: The City has an Open Space Trust Fund, approved by the voters by a 3-1 margin in a public referendum in 2007, that is set aside exclusively for park land acquisition and park construction. This fund currently has a balance of $7 million, and approximately $2 million is added to the fund each year. This fund, by itself, provides a bonding capacity of $69 million. This is enough to fund the debt for the purchase of the NW resiliency park as well as the two acres in the Southwest, without ANY increase in taxes. Jersey City Rally Supports Muslim and Immigrant Communities

Newark Ave Pedestrian Plaza in Jersey City
A Jersey City Rally in support of Muslim and immigrant communities was held on Monday evening, January 30th, at Jersey City’s Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza. Over a thousand people jammed the area with signs and chants in solidarity with other rally’s that have taken place all over the United States since the President signed an Executive Order that put a halt on the processing of Syrian refugees and barred immigration from seven countries.
A temporary stay on the ban has been ordered by a federal court judge. Rally’s like the one in Jersey City have been taken place all over the country since Friday, January 27.

Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop spoke to the participants of the rally and mentioned “The anti-immigrant and anti-refugee issue is especially personal for me and my family. My family came to this country in response to anti-Semitism in Europe during the Holocaust. As a city, we can play a small role in serving as a haven for residents who are seeking basic human rights, such as safety and peace.” The Mayor also assured the crowd that ” Over the last few days we have worked with advocates of the State of New Jersey and we will introduce formal laws to the city council over the next few days that make Jersey City one of the clearest and strongest Sanctuary cities in the State of New Jersey.”
