Bayonne Elite Cheer, Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis Celebrating 2017 Season

The cheerleaders of Bayonne Elite (ages 4-18) spent St. Patrick’s Day Weekend competing against hundreds of other teams from around the country at the Battle at the Capitol National Competition hosted by Coastal Cheer & Dance. Around 200 athletes, accompanied by their coaches & family members, traveled to National Harbor, MD with only one mission – to take over the capitol.

All 9 teams from the organization, including their two exhibition teams, performed during the two-day competition. Out of the remaining seven teams, Diamonds (large senior level 3) and Rubies (large peewee level 2) came home with National Titles. The highlight of the weekend was when Onyx, their Senior Level 4 Team, was crowned National Champions and received the highest combined score of all the Level 4 teams who competed, in spite of having to restart their routine after a teammate was injured.

Hoboken Introduces Post Office Redevelopment Plan for New Hotel & Improved Waterfront Connectivity

The City of Hoboken is introducing a redevelopment plan for the Hoboken Post Office Rehabilitation Area that includes a new hotel and improvements to waterfront access and connectivity. The plan, which will be introduced at the City Council meeting on Wednesday, April 5, 2017, would redevelop the underutilized parking lot behind the Post Office as a hotel with unique architecture while preserving the Hoboken Post Office as an important landmark. It would also require the redesign and reconstruction of Newark Street with wide sidewalks and streetscape features to improve connectivity to the waterfront and would activate the block of Sinatra Drive between Newark Street and First Street.
 
“I thank Council President Giattino and Redevelopment Committee Chair Councilman Cunningham for advocating for this project and working very hard to address some of my initial concerns,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “With the W Hotel often fully booked, there is a clear need for more hotel space for our families, friends, and everyone who visits Hoboken. This world-class hotel would improve pedestrian and bicycle connectivity to our waterfront, replace an eyesore with a vibrant, active streetscape with public amenities, and also provide much-needed meeting and event space for our community.”
 
It is estimated that the plan would create more than 100 permanent jobs and generate over $1 million annually in real estate taxes in addition to hotel taxes on a site that is currently exempt from taxes.
 
“This project will bring tremendous benefits to the neighborhood, create jobs in Hoboken, and generate significant real estate and hotel taxes that will help to keep our taxes stable,” said Council President Jennifer Giattino. “I want to especially thank City planner Jessica Giorgianni who has done an amazing job on this plan.”
 
The Hoboken 2004 Master Plan encourages hotels in the area near Hoboken Terminal to “provide a needed service for residents, businesses, and visitors.”
 
“As Council Subcommittee Chair, my projects have always strongly supported diversifying our tax base from residential towards more commercial, and this project does just that,” said Councilman Peter Cunningham. “I am confident we have met these challenges which will result in a win-win for Hoboken and its local businesses and residents.”
 
Setback requirements for the hotel, which must use high quality design materials and architecture, are designed to narrow the building to maximize light, air, and open space and minimize shadows on Pier A Park. The implementation of the plan would terminate the existing easement with the Post Office which provides angled parking for Post Office vehicles along Newark Street where there currently is no sidewalk. All Post Office and hotel loading activities would be moved to First Street and take place inside of a building and the hotel would be required to have lease agreements with private parking garages.

Hudson County Community College Hosting Job Fair

The event, is open to Hudson County Community College students and all Hudson County residents; 40 companies are participating.
 

Hudson County Community College Hosting Job Fair Hudson County Community College (HCCC) will hold a Spring 2017 Job Fair on Wednesday, April 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the College’s North Hudson Campus – 4800 Kennedy Boulevard in Union City. The HCCC North Hudson Campus is adjacent to the Bergenline Avenue Transit Station. There will be part-time and full-time positions offered. Job hunters are recommended to dress for a business interview and to bring five to 10 copies of their résumés to the event.

The companies represented at the event include nearly every sector of business, including health care, banking/financial services, insurance, education, logistics, computer programming, retail sales, STEM, social services, technology, government, pool maintenance, real estate, U.S. armed forces, and more.

Jersey City Writers to Meet March 27th, 2017

jc writers Jersey City Writers is a community of dedicated writers who seek to develop and explore their craft by interacting with other writers. They inspire and support each other to be the best writers they  can be in a fun and open social setting.
JCW meets on three days — Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Each meeting day follows the same schedule. Twice a month and  host a Writer’s Workshop and twice a month  host a night of Writer’s Prompts. (Please see schedule for details and guidelines).
All genres are welcome. Each attendee is encouraged   to finish their play, novel or  short story. Stop by and bond with other writers who understand the complicated, yet satisfying process of creating something from nothing.

Liberty Science Center’s Planned SciTech Scity get Jersey City Council Approval for Land Transfer

The Jersey City Council recently voted to approve the land transfer necessary for Liberty Science Center’s planned SciTech Scity, a mini-city, unique in the world, that will house a K-12 school dedicated to STEM; the world’s first business “optimizer” for 100 science, technology, and engineering startups; a small conference center; and Scholars Village, short-term accommodations for visiting scientists and entrepreneurs and longer-term residences for STEM college students and people working at SciTech Scity.

“We want Jersey City to become one of the East Coast’s premier innovation and STEM education hubs,” said Paul Hoffman, President and CEO of Liberty Science Center. “SciTech Scity may be the region’s answer to Silicon Valley.”

Turnpike Interchange 14A Improvement Project Work Schedule Next Three Weeks

The following work is scheduled over the next three weeks:
The Turnpike 14A Improvement Project Work Schedule for the next three weeks is posted here to help you during your weekly commute it shows what areas will be worked on and when.
  Toll Plaza
  • East side (entering 14A): renovation of existing Toll Utility Building continues.
  • Reconstruction of Toll Lanes 8-10 continues.
  • During the weekend of 04/07/17, Toll Lanes 8, 9 & 10 will be reopened.
Ramps between the Toll Plaza and the Hudson County Extension (HCE)
  • Widening construction on the ramps to and from the westbound and eastbound HCE is complete to the extent possible and the final alignment has been implemented. Asphalt resurfacing of the ramps will be performed in 2017.
  • Local street level work at Garfield, Avenue C and JFK Boulevard bridges will resume in the Spring of 2017. This work will be supported by Jersey City and Bayonne Police as needed.
Avenue E / Proposed Roundabout
  • New roadway construction on Avenue E near 53rd Street continues. 
  • Deep bridge foundation construction in dedicated work zones continues. This work will be supported by Bayonne Police as needed.
  • New bridge pier construction in dedicated work zones continues.
Connector Bridge (Bridge from the Toll Plaza to Port Jersey Boulevard)
  • Traffic was shifted onto the new Connector Bridge in a two-way temporary traffic pattern. Please CLICK HERE for graphic.

Route 440 and Pulaski Street Intersection / Jughandle
  • Ramp roadway construction continues.
  • Median barrier construction on Route 440 continues.
  • Ramp structure construction to southbound Route 440 continues.

  • During the week of 04/17/17, northbound Route 440 traffic will be shifted left (two northbound lanes adjacent to median) and a work zone will be established on the right.

Hudson County Community College to Hold Its Fourth Annual ‘Girls in Technology’ Symposium

HCCC LOGO BLUEMarch 21, 2017, Jersey City, NJ – Hudson County Community College (HCCC) will host the “Girls in Technology” Symposium on Thursday, March 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held in the College’s Culinary Conference Center at 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City. 200 young women from Hudson County middle and high schools will participate.

Now in its fourth year, the HCCC “Girls in Technology” symposium provides the young women attending with opportunities to learn about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) studies and careers from educators and individuals actually working in STEM, and STEM-related, careers.

The event will begin with breakfast, followed by a welcome from HCCC President Glen Gabert, Ph.D. and an overview of the day’s activities from the HCCC Dean of the Division of Non-Traditional Programs, Ana Chapman-McCausland.

Bayonne Parking Meters, Pay Stations, and Street-Sweeping Back on March 27

                Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that Bayonne’s parking meters, pay stations, street-sweeping, and alternate side parking will be back in effect on Monday, March 27.  Permit zone parking will also be enforced.  These various parking practices had been suspended during the recent winter snowstorm.  With the melting of the snow expected to continue, all of the usual parking practices and enforcement will be back in effect on March 27.

 

Several Bayonne Events Announced for National Library Week

                The Bayonne Free Public Library and Cultural Center of Bayonne will be celebrating National Library Week, April 9-15.  The theme is “Libraries Transform.”  National Library Week was first sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) in 1958.

                The Bayonne Free Public Library and Cultural Center will be hosting the following events, and would like the community to come out and support it.  Please note that some events require prior registration. 

                Monday, April 10: The Children’s Room will be holding two separate events.  The first event will be for children in grades one to three from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  This group will have a spy stealth challenge.  Children can dress up in costumes of their favorite character.  The second event will be for children in grades four to seven from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This second group will participate in a treasure hunt.

                The library will hold registration for the events of April 10 during the week of March 27 in the Children’s Room as follows:  Monday, March 27, from 9:00 a.m. to11:30 a.m., 12:00 noon to 4:30 p.m., and 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Tuesday, March 28, through Saturday, April 1, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and 12:00 noon through 4:30 p.m.  The library will register twenty children for each group on a first-come, first–served basis.  Prizes will be awarded to the first three children in each group who complete the challenge. 

                Tuesday, April 11:  This day is National Library Workers’ Day.  Come in and meet the staff as they can offer many suggestions on interesting books to read and help you learn the many benefits of what your local library can offer you.  The staff will be doing a showcase display on special collections that have meaning to them.  It will be located on the second floor. 

                Wednesday, April 12: The library will be hosting its first murder mystery event.  If you enjoy the game Clue, come out to see who was murdered, where they were murdered, and by what weapon.  Registration will be held the week of March 27 for the first twenty detectives who are brave enough.

                Hours of registration for the murder mystery are Monday, March 27, through Thursday, March 30, from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the circulation desk. 

                Thursday, April 13: Take a break and breathe in!  It’s time for Introduction to Meditation.  This group meets every Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the O’Connor Gallery on the second floor of the library.  Today only they will host a fifteen-to-thirty minute presentation on a healthy way of living and eating. 

                Friday, April 14, and Saturday, April 15:  Please help the library staff support the Hudson County Animal League for two days.  Bring in an item for your overdue books from the following list.

                Items needed are: Friskies Canned Cat Food, Purina Complete Dry Cat Food, Purina Dry Kitten Food, Fancy Feast Kitten Turkey, Wee-Wee Pads, paper towels, Latex-free medical gloves, new or gently used clean sheets, large towels and pillow cases.   Since this is such an important organization and cause in Bayonne, the library will continue collecting donated items during the whole month of April.  Please refer to the list of items above. 

The library will be raffling off sets of books for all ages in the month of April, so join the library in filling out your raffle tickets.  Good luck!  All winners will be announced by phone on May 1.  Please check out the library’s many book display located on the main floor.
