Back in the 1970s, alumni from the Argos Eyes Drama Society at Saint Peter’s College met one night in a tiny Jersey City attic and talked about starting a theater where they could put on plays that challenged them artistically and attracted local audiences. By the end of the meeting, that group of aspiring playmakers became the Attic Ensemble.

Several theaters and more than a hundred plays later, the Attic Ensemble has settled into the Barrow Mansion on Wayne Street in Jersey City, a block from the Grove Street PATH in a hip neighborhood where the company continues to stretch and grow. Continue reading THE SECRETS IN THE ATTIC

What Is The World’s Riskiest Hotspot?

Hint: It’s Not Iraq or Afghanistan, But Rather,

A Celebrity Vacation Haven

While most Americans are focused on conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, primarily because we have troops in active combat there, potentially significant threats to the U.S. are simmering elsewhere, from China to Russia, from India to Pakistan – and one of the world’s most secluded celebrity tourist destinations may prove to be the Cuba of the new millennium. POWERHOUSE ARTS FESTIVAL-September 12th

sept-12-power-house

The 4th  Annual Powerhouse Arts Festival

 11:00am to 6:00pm.

The annual Powerhouse Arts District Neighborhood Association’s barbeque and crafts fair will have all the fine arts, nifty crafts, music, cheap beer and block-partying good times of last year, this year PDNA is adding a bunch more vendor spaces and hopefully some live art this year.

PDNA is seeking VOLUNTEERS for the day of the event. They will need people to help with set up, grill-manning (or woman-ing), beer pouring, etc. There will be free food and drink for all who volunteer, plus that special warm and fuzzy feeling that comes with contributing to a good cause. For more information or to sign up, email Jessica.

The festival is also a fundraiser for the Association. Much of our operating income for the year comes from the Fest – so tell your friends and come eat, drink, and be merry in service of the neighborhood.

“Gipsy Jazz” on Brunswick Street- Downtown, Jersey City

madame_gipsy20jazzDowntown Jersey City is where I was born, and raised, and Brunswick Street was a very important part of the Village community when I was growing up.

That is why as a homeowner in the village and Publisher of the River View Observer, I am excited to post this item from Rob Crow of JC Village- Thanks Rob!

(Sep 05, 2009) They call this style of music in Europe “Manouche”. In Jersey City, Mattias Gustafsson, co-owner of Madame Claude Cafe, and fellow musician Bryan Beninghove, call it “Gipsy Jazz”. As I sit with my eight year old daughter in my very own neighborhood on an absolutely perfect late summers evening, I would call it nothing short of astonishing.
