The River View Observer sat down with Phil Granito and talked about his debut album, The Sons of Saint Rocco, which “drops” this week, to talk about the tracks, life, and whatever comes up.

RVO : I have to say the record sounds like fun from beginning to end.

Phil: I was doing it for fun. I brought in a lot of friends to work with me. Bobby Jay and Angel Risoffs both came in and helped me out with the vocals. Bobby sang bass on all the tracks and Angel performed the background vocals on BOOT ‘EM UP. Just terrific, and very humbling, the caliber of players who came together for me. These guys have played with Chuck Berry, Darlene Love and Bo Diddely, just to name a very few. It’s not about name-dropping, you know, it’s about heritage. They’ve been at the center of the scene for the last quarter century and they feel the same way about this music as I do.

RVO: Yes, it’s obvious from listening to the performances that there’s a deep knowledge here, but also a very authentic passion. Continue reading DO YOU WANNA ROCK? The Sons of Saint Rocco-Music Interview -Phil Granito

Joe Pantoliano Fights His Demons On and Off the Screen

By Sally Deeringjoey-pants-no-kiddingJoey Pants’ award-winning documentary No Kidding, Me Too! sheds light on mental illnessWhen the cameras rolled, actor Joe Pantoliano dug deep into his dark side to portray characters whose personal demons drove them to commit violent, unthinkable acts. Pantoliano’s shocking performance as psychotic gangster Ralph Cifaretto on The Sopranos still resonates like a horrific dream, and his tour-de-force portrayal earned him a well-deserved Emmy Award.

On television and in films, Pantoliano never shied away from revealing his characters’ inner-demons, but when the cameras stopped rolling, the actor isolated himself, afraid that others might learn he was fighting a personal demon of his own – depression.

Remembering Old Jersey City -THE DUPREES

In 1960 this vocal group practiced

in Downtown Jersey City’s Hamilton Park

and went on  to become

THE DUPREES

John Salvato 2nd row middle (July 19, 1940)

Tom Bialoglow 1st row left (November 5, 1940)

Unfortunately, not much has been written about The Duprees, but their musical contribution to Rock ‘N’ Roll history is reflected in their songs and their unique style. While many vocal groups performed standards from the ’40s and ’50s, only The Duprees could pull them off the way they did, and were one of the first to do so. In their early years, they were able to impressively blend the best from the sounds of the Swing Era, with the distinctive soul and infectious beat of the groups identified with rock and roll. In all they would register nine Top 100 entries nationally.  In their home state of New Jersey, and also in New York, the Duprees were phenomenally popular, with virtually all of their records making the Top 10.

But still, they were a fine, yet totally underrated group, whose recorded legacy indicates that they were far more versatile than their early more successful issues showed. When listened to as a whole, their library of recordings from 1962 to 1975 clearly demonstrates that they were easily the equals of many of their more commercially successful contemporaries. The later years showed their ability to adapt to new styles, as they searched for the right new sound and proved to be a very talented and diverse group. It was the genuine love of music and performing that kept the group together for so many years after their initial success.
