…Friendly Homes Needed
By Tom Dwyer

It’s a dog’s life…and a cat’s life too for that matter …here in Hudson County.  Over the last decade, a whole new industry dedicated to pet comfort has sprung up: a boutique industry of dog and cat spas, professional dog walkers, holistic veterinarians, and even a special Mass in Hoboken that bestows yearly blessings on pets. But for every lucky pet that has a home, there are still those unfortunate creatures living on the street or in a shelter.   Thankfully many Hudson County shelters and animal lovers are working hard to make sure every home finds the pet that’s right for them.  It’s not just good for the animals; after all, it’s a medical fact that having a pet is good for one’s body and spirit.

Tragedy Not To Be Repeated
On June 20th a grisly discovery was made when 15 animal carcasses were found in an unplugged freezer in the recently closed Hudson County SPCA located on Johnson Street in Jersey City.  This horror not only took the lives of innocent animals, it also cast a shadow on other well-run organizations that care for animals in Hudson County, including two of the most respected, the Hudson County Animal League www.hcalnj.org  and the Liberty Animal Shelter www.libertyanimalshelterpetfinder.org  both located in Jersey City.  Aurora Piacenpino, the manager of the Liberty Animal Shelter, admits that the incident at the SPCA shelter initially damaged the reputation of other shelters. “A lot of the public is unclear exactly which shelter the incident happened in.  And when a story like this comes to light it makes our job harder. But in respect to this SPCA incident we have had an overwhelming positive response from the public with donations and adopting pets—a huge response.”

July Health- ACL Repairs Are Easy as ABC

For Christ Hospital Orthopedist

dr-augustin-again.jpg

Jeffery Augustin, MD,

Ask a group of orthopedic surgeons what is the most common sports-related injury, and their responses will most likely be – injury to the ACL.  Fortunately, for both the professional athlete and the weekend warrior alike, tremendous strides have been made recently in treating such an injury, and Jeffery Augustin, MD, a board-certified and fellow-trained orthopedic surgeon at

Christ Hospital, is on the cutting edge.

According to Dr. Augustin, “ACL or the anterior cruciate ligament connects the upper leg bone or femur with the lower leg bone or tibia.  An ACL injury occurs when the knee is straightened beyond its normal limits (hyperextended), twisted, or bent side to side. This may happen when changing direction rapidly, which commonly occurs in sports that require stop-and-go movements. An ACL injury may also occur after contact in a sport or in an accident.”

Mini-Vacations on a Budget

By Deborah Lambeth

A vacation doesn’t need to be expensive or elaborate to give you a much-needed break from the stress of your everyday routine. Sometimes the most relaxing getaways are right in your own backyardIt’s almost that time of year when families drag out the maps, travel brochures, and other things to plan their annual “summer vacation.” While some people look upon this as a chore, others find it to be a calming experience—envisioning a week away from work on some tropical island doing something you have never done before. Oh, that life could be so blissful! Of course, coming back down to earth from that momentary escape from reality, one does have to plan; there are reservations to be made, expenses to be calculated, asking for the vacation time away from work, etc., etc., etc. .

“The Roadhouse” Comes Alive in a “Lightning Films” Production
By Evelyn Bonilla

In the world of independent film, director’s as well as actors challenge themselves to bring to the screen “true to life” emotions. There are no sound stages, no cue cards and no sketched out sets; it’s all about “on your mark, get set, go!” Actors and actresses are free to delve into their craft and to express themselves without barriers and their directors are of the mind set to see how far they can go. Is this type of acting challenging? Yes! Is it exhilarating to most actors? Absolutely!

Independent films are taking over the film industry; many actors and actresses are clamoring at the chance to bring these “unpredictable, untraditional characters” within these films to life. Continue reading July-“The Roadhouse” Indy Film
