The Gimme Shelter Project grew from Michelle Vitale’s work  with the homeless and it is to bring awareness to the 16% homeless increase in New Jersey(taken from the Homeless Point In Time Count).
Ms. Vitale has created 8 out of 16 weatherized blankets with the intent to give them away after the full 16 are made. The other 8 have organized Stitch Ins so the community can contribute to the project.
4 out of Vitale’s 8 blankets are currently on view at Windows on Columbus with an an opening this Friday March 6th from 6 to 8. Also works from Gail Wilbury
The organized Stitch In will take place on Sunday March 8th

 By Sally Deering
Cast of IMPERFECT WOMEN OF THE BIBLE by Marsha Trice, performed by the Phoenix Ensemble of Jersey City
Sometimes friendships lead to creative collaborations and nobody knows that better than Marsha Trice, Artistic Director of the Phoenix Ensemble theater company in Jersey City. Trice and several company members met taking acting classes and doing plays in college and now they are collaborating as producers, actors, costumers – you name it – as the Phoenix Ensemble once again becomes a viable theater venue on Jersey City’s cultural landscape.

Together with producer Michele Baldwin, the creative team supports Phoenix Ensemble’s mission to bring theater, workshops and classes to Jersey City residents, especially to kids and teens who need creative opportunities to express themselves.

The STEPS Clapboard used on location in Jersey City to film the movie STEPS
Eddie Harris grew up in Jersey City and as a writer and filmmaker he sometimes looks to his neighborhood for inspiration. Harris found it one day when he noticed a young man in a wheelchair, who had become partially paralyzed from an altercation after years of hustling on the streets. When Harris wondered how a person could rise above that kind of life-changing experience, he took to his computer and began writing STEPS, his new movie now being filmed on locations throughout Jersey City.
STEPS writer Ed Harris, second from right, watches his movie filmed with producer Michael Baumgartner , both of Jersey City
“The movie is about redemption, recovery, forgiveness and love,†Harris says, as he heads to a baseball field in the Lafayette section of Jersey City where the crew is filming. “It’s about a guy who sets out to be the next Johnny Cochran but his life takes a terrible turn. He spirals downward into alcohol and loses everything until a street pastor reaches out to him. It’s a Jersey City story anybody can relate to, an uplifting story.†Continue reading  Jersey City’s Eddie Harris shoots STEPS,an Indie film about One Man’s Quest for Love and Redemption  →

Three women artists make the walls of the Center for the Arts at Casa Colombo in Jersey City their own in OF THE MIND, an exhibit of dreamy Italian landscapes, whimsical wood sculptures and moody photographs of the Manhattan Skyline.
Artists Abby Levine, Alina Oswald, and Jacqueline Falconi’s art works reflect their personal interests, things that inspire them and that also have a little whimsy, like Levine’s painted wood sculptures. Levine, who resides in Union City, is a graduate of the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, and has exhibited her art work throughout the U.S.

A 10-foot map of the U.S. made of souvenir plates from all 50 states; candy-colored 1960s-inspired pop art paintings; spray painted murals; all this and more goes on exhibit this weekend at the Hoboken Artists’ Studio Tour.
Artwork by Lou Carbone will be featured at the Hoboken Historical Museum
The Hoboken Artists’ Studio Tour is a free, self-guided walking tour of artists’ studios, galleries and group exhibitions that begins Fri, Nov. 7 and runs through Sun, Nov. 9, with more than 100 local artists participating. City Hall, Monroe Street Arts Center, Hoboken Historical Museum and Maxwell’s bar and restaurant are some of the 24 venues where artists will be exhibiting their work. Many will share their process; others will share interesting conversations; it’s all what makes this yearly event so interesting. (Jersey City had their studio tour last week!)
New York’s Broadway and London’s West End resuscitated Noel Coward’s 1941 farce BLITHE SPIRIT, last season, with the iconic Angela Lansbury in the role of the eccentric Madame Arcati.
Jersey City’s Attic Ensemble follows in those theatrical footsteps as it ushers in its 44th season with this kooky supernatural stage comedy – just in time for Halloween.
Attic Ensemble Opens 44th Season with Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward
Forty-four years bringing theater to the locals is no small feat and Attic Ensemble keeps the curtain rising even though financially the troupe could use some help filling the coffers. The last few years have been tough-going for the little theater company and there were times the artistic team led by president Billy Mitchell thought the company would be closing its doors for good. But the last two shows attracted large audiences, so the plays go on and hopefully this upswing will lead to a theater angel who may want to adopt the troupe.
