JERSEY CITY – Hoboken Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla and Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop today announced a partnership to pursue a combined bike share program for the Cities of Jersey City and Hoboken. Both cities have committed to selecting the same bike share company, will release a request for proposal (RFP) from interested companies, and are expected to roll out a bike share program together later this year.

“Both Hoboken and Jersey City are leaders in advancing alternative transportation options, and we are thrilled to partner together to utilize the same regional bike share program for our cities,” said Mayor Bhalla and Mayor Fulop. “Now, more than ever, a greater number of people are relying on shared transportation for essential services, employment, and more, and a regional approach will substantially improve the quality of life for all of our residents. And, as our communities continue to adapt to COVID-19, this coordinated effort will provide residents and visitors with healthy, socially distanced alternatives to mass transit.”

By choosing one bike share company for both cities, Mayor Bhalla and Mayor Fulop seek to achieve greater regional connectivity and mobility within both cities, making it easier for residents and visitors to travel within the two communities. A number of residents within Hoboken and Jersey City regularly commute to and from both cities, and a regional bike share option will provide easier access to employment opportunities and improve both cities regional economies.

A regional bike share company will also help advance safer, alternative transportation options, a central component of both cities’ Vision Zero campaigns to eliminate pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries within 10 years or less. Jersey City and Hoboken are two of the most bike-friendly communities in New Jersey, with a combined 75 miles of protected bike lanes, conventional bike lanes, and shared lanes.

Currently, the City of Hoboken utilizes Jersey Bike, while Jersey City uses Citi Bike.

On Sunday June 7, 2020 a Bayonne group Black in Bayonne organized Power in the Park a peaceful demonstration against the killing of George Floyd an unarmed African-American man who was killed in Minneapolis when police officer Derek Chauvin held his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8:46 seconds.

Black in Bayonne organized the event to meet at the Gazebo in Stephen Greg Park at 1pm our River View Observer photographer was there at the beginning of the event and took the following photos.

The event was planned to remember George Floyd and to also encourage voter registration for the upcoming Presidential election in November 2020. Including at the event was an Advocacy Station for voter registration and to join the NAACP there was also a Yoga Station for those that attended.

We will post more photos as they are sent to us of the rest of the day including the mark to the flag pole in Bayonne and the 8:46 minute silent tribute to Mr. Floyd.

COVID-19 UPDATE 6/7/2020 Mayor Davis has directed OEM to keep residents informed on all the latest information related to this health emergency.

Bayonne Residents CURRENTLY Positive – 567* The number above reflects only the Bayonne residents that are CURRENTLY COVID-19 Positive. We have 517 Bayonne residents that are considered recovered. Recovered patients, according to the CDC, no longer have to isolate or be reported.

Our numbers of current residents that are COVID positive continues to decline, even as testing opportunities have increased. TESTING: There are numerous options for COVID-19 or Anitbody testing in Bayonne. The BMC continues testing at Veterans Stadium for people with appointments. Currently, widespread testing of senior congregate housing is taking place in Bayonne for all seniors (with or without symptoms).

GOVERNOR’S DIRECTIVES: There have been many changes to the Directives that have been in place since March. Phase 2 of reopening begins on 6/15. Outdoor restaurant dining and all non-essential in person retail. On 6/22, Barber shops and hair salons can reopen. Please see the Governor’s Social Media or go to www.covid19.nj.gov for details. MASKS: There is no mandate by the State of New Jersey or the City of Bayonne that requires healthy individuals to wear a mask when outdoors. Masks must be worn when in stores or outdoors when social distancing is not possible.
