1st Initiative under new Resiliency Master Plan uses Innovative, Cost-Effective Flood Reduction and Pollution Solutions
JERSEY CITY –Mayor Steven Fulop, the Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA), the Division of City Planning, and the Office of Sustainability announce an innovative approach to expand the city’s efforts to drastically reduce pollution while promoting sustainable development. The dual-pronged approach enables properties outside designated flood zones and requires those within to incorporate green infrastructure to promote the soundest of sustainable construction and pollution reduction practices, implementing localized flooding controls, while improving overall quality of life for community.
On Sunday June 7, 2020 a Bayonne group Black in Bayonne organized Power in the Park a peaceful demonstration against the killing of George Floyd an unarmed African-American man who was killed in Minneapolis when police officer Derek Chauvin held his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8:46 seconds.
Black in Bayonne organized the event to meet at the Gazebo in Stephen Greg Park at 1pm our River View Observer photographer was there at the beginning of the event and took the following photos.
The event was planned to remember George Floyd and to also encourage voter registration for the upcoming Presidential election in November 2020. Including at the event was an Advocacy Station for voter registration and to join the NAACP there was also a Yoga Station for those that attended.

Initiative to Focus on Food Deserts, Inequity with Food Access, and Education on Healthy Eating; Program is a Partnership with AeroFarms & World Economic Forum
Mayor Steven M. Fulop announced this week that the City of Jersey City will be moving forward with the 1st in the nation municipal vertical farming program. The program will be in conjunction with AeroFarms, the world leader in vertical farming, and the World Economic Forum (WEF) who recently selected Jersey City as their first partner in the Healthy Cities and Communities 2030 Initiatives.

Anyone getting an appointment for a test by a Bayonne physician by the Bayonne Medical Center, will be tested on their property. The BMC is also testing senior citizens at all the various senior congregate housing in the city.

Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla and the City of Hoboken ask all residents who attended Friday’s peaceful demonstration for racial justice to make an appointment for a COVID-19 test. Health experts, along with Governor Murphy, have also asked any participant in a demonstration to get a test, out of an abundance of caution, to protect the health and safety of local communities. Residents can schedule a test with their primary care physician or utilize Riverside Medical’s testing facility which is open to all residents by appointment.
To make an appointment for a COVID-19 test through the City’s partnership with Riverside Medical, which is open to all residents, please call the Community Emergency Response Team hotline at 201-420-5621 Monday through Friday, from 9 am until 5 pm. Symptoms of COVID-19 are not needed to receive a test.
“Friday’s demonstration was a powerful statement in the struggle for racial equality,†said Mayor Bhalla. “At the same time, to keep our community safe, I ask any resident who attended the event to please schedule a COVID-19 test given the practical difficulties of social distancing at the demonstration.â€
On the advice of health experts, the City recommends residents who attended the demonstration, self-isolate whenever possible and avoid any contact with vulnerable populations, including the elderly, until receiving the results of a COVID-19 test.
If a resident does not have health insurance, the City will pay for the cost of a test with Riverside Medical. Riverside and the City have also made testing available to any employee of any Hoboken business in advance of a gradual re-opening. The results of a COVID-19 test at the Riverside site are provided within 15 minutes, on site.

Consistent with The Mayor’s Pledge per President Obama, Jersey City clarifies and amends JCPD General Orders
Mayor Steven M. Fulop and Public Safety Director James Shea announced today that the “Use of Force†General Order for the Jersey City Police Department will be amended where necessary and clarified where necessary to be consistent with best practices.
“I took the pledge last night when President Obama asked mayors to step up and we are starting on Day 1 with changes and clarification where needed†said Mayor Fulop. “We have the best police department anywhere in the country and when it is possible to be even better, we will take steps to get there.â€
Over the next few weeks the Mayor will work in conjunction with the City Council and the community to make sure that Jersey City remains a national leader with regards to policing policy.

Parishioners invited to join Cardinal Tobin for Mass livestream at 6pm
Newark, NJ – The Archdiocese of Newark will livestream its annual Chrism Mass on Monday, June 8, 2020, at 6 p.m. from the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. The Mass will be celebrated by Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark with only the Auxiliary Bishops and Episcopal Vicars.
Faithful awaiting the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation and parishioners are encouraged to participate by viewing the livestream which will be available on the Archdiocese of Newark’s YouTube page at www.youtube.com/NwkArchdiocese.
The Chrism Mass is the yearly renewal of priestly promises. Holy Oils will also be blessed for distribution to parishes at a later date. Parishes may continue to use the Holy Oils, which were blessed in 2019, until these oils are received.

Mayor Davis has informed us that a 50yr old male has died from Coronavirus-related illness. The death is the 72nd Bayonne resident to die since the health emergency began. Mayor Davis extends his sympathy to the family of this gentleman, on behalf of all Bayonne.
