BAYONNE COVID-19 UPDATE FOR 1/14/2021

Mayor Davis has informed us of the passing of a 46yr old male who also tested positive for COVID-19.  On behalf of all of Bayonne, the Mayor sends his condolences to the family of this resident.

Under the direction of Mayor Davis, OEM provides weekly updates on the status of Bayonne in relation to the COVID-19 Health Emergency.

Bayonne Residents CURRENTLY Positive – 467*

  • The number above reflects the Bayonne residents that are CURRENTLY COVID-19 Positive.

OEM UPDATE:  To date, 4,277 Bayonne residents have tested positive for COVID-19, regardless of where that test was given. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 93 Bayonne residents have died due to Coronavirus-related illnesses. 3,717 residents have recovered to date (discontinued isolation per CDC guidelines).  There are currently 12 Covid-19 Positive Bayonne residents that are admitted to Bayonne Medical Center.  Please see Mayor Davis’ weekly video update for latest information.

VACCINE UPDATE: NJ has moved all seniors (65+) and anyone 16-64 with serious health conditions into Phase 1A.  Any Bayonne resident that is in Phase 1A can register to be vaccinated at our County Vaccination Site in South Kearny by going to www.hudsoncovidvax.org/vax/registration.

Any resident in Phase 1A that wants to be vaccinated in Bayonne can either call 201-858-6088 or email at bayvax@baynj.org to be placed on the list.  Someone will call you to schedule appointment at BMC when more vaccine becomes available.

    Hudson County Community College Receives $850,000 Investment from JPMorgan Chase

    The award will fund the College’s initiatives to address and improve
    Hudson County’s COVID-related workforce challenges

    January 15, 2021, Jersey City, N.J. – Hudson County Community College (HCCC) has been named the recipient of a one-year, $850,000 investment from JPMorgan Chase. The investment will be utilized for a program the College developed to address the challenges of the economic crisis in Hudson County that were brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program is designed to provide lasting improvement in the County’s workforce ecosystem.

    “We are exceedingly grateful to JPMorgan Chase for funding our ‘Gateway to Innovation’ initiative,” said HCCC President Dr. Chris Reber. “This program is strategically aligned with needs related to the community’s COVID-19 challenges, and the College’s student success and ‘Hudson Helps’ initiatives.”

    BAYONNE COVID UPDATE FOR 12/31/2020

    Mayor Davis has informed us three Bayonne residents with COVID-19 have passed away.  Three men, ages 76, 77, and 88 have recently died and also tested positive for COVID-19.  Mayor Davis extends his deepest condolences, on behalf of all of Bayonne, to the families of this residents.

    Under the direction of Mayor Davis, OEM provides weekly updates on the status of Bayonne in relation to the COVID-19 Health Emergency.

    OEM UPDATE:  To date, 3,584 Bayonne residents have tested positive for COVID-19, regardless of where that test was given. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 92 Bayonne residents have died due to Coronavirus-related illnesses. 3,116 residents have recovered to date (discontinued isolation per CDC guidelines). As the numbers continue to rise, we urge everyone to please continue good hygiene, practice personal responsibility and social distancing.  The State of NJ still requires masks to be worn inside businesses and whenever social-distancing cannot occur.  Please go to www.covid19.nj.gov for the latest information.

    BMC UPDATE: There are currently 21 Bayonne residents with COVID-19 admitted in the Bayonne Medical Center.

    NEW 2021 SCHEDULE FOR Bayonne garbage and recycling

              Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the City of Bayonne has adopted a new garbage and recycling schedule, effective January 2, 2021. 

              For purposes of garbage and recycling pick-ups, Bayonne will be divided into three zones:  Zone 1 will run from 1st Street through 16th Street including Broadway.  Zone 2 will run from 16th Street to 30th Street, including Broadway, Prospect Avenue, Avenue F, and Harbor Pointe (the former Alexan).  Zone 3 will run from 30th Street to 63rd Street, including County Village (the development by the City Line, the Bayonne-Jersey City border), and all other thoroughfares between 30th and 31st Streets.

    A CONVERSATION WITH dR.MICHAEL lOFTUS CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER AT JERSEY CITY MEDICAL CENTER ON COVID-19 VACCINE

    Jersey City Medical Center began distributing the COVID-19 vaccine to its employees. In the coming weeks, the vaccine will be given to first responders and high-risk individuals before it is made available to the general public. We sat down with Dr. Michael Loftus, chief medical officer at the hospital, to ask him questions about the vaccine.

    Q: Which COVID-19 vaccine are employees at Jersey City Medical Center receiving?

    A: We have the specialized freezers that are required for storing the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine so we will start by distributing that vaccine.

    Q: Why are health care workers getting the vaccine first?

    A: The goal is to vaccinate some of the highest risk groups – those most likely to be exposed on a frequent basis. The thought is to vaccinate those who are exposed to COVID-19 frequently and as well as those who would negatively impact our ability to care for sick patients if they were to become ill themselves.

    Q: Do you feel these vaccines are safe?

    A: Absolutely. The safety data was gathered in a very rigorous way. These vaccines were run through the appropriate safety protocols and the early testing data has been excellent. It’s not just one manufacturer either. It is at least two, with very similar safety profiles. Everyone here at Jersey City Medical Center are very excited to be able to offer this as an important intervention in our fight against COVID-19. The vaccine is going to be the biggest game changer we’ve had so far to fight COVID-19.

    have you ever considered giving the gift of life? Former Jersey City Resident IN NEED OF A KIDNEY

    Meet Tony Lombardi, he is a Husband, Father, Son, Brother Friend.

    Tony is in need of Kidney, he presently recieves regular dialysis treatments three times a week Monday, Tuesday, Friday 3-1/2 hours at a time, at DaVita Dialysis Center in middletown, New Jersey. The treatments helps his kidneys do their job & keeps him alive.

    Tony needs a transplant, this will provide him with the ability to live longer, healthier and to live more of a normal life and will give him time to do what he loves & treasures the most spending time with his family and new granddaughter. However, finding a kidney is not easy. Just ask the thousands & thousands of people on the waiting list for a deceased kidney like Tony.

    Time is not on Tony’s side, especially, if you are 70 years of age, you only have until 75 to get a deceased kidney. The average wait time is 7 to 8 years for a kidney from a deceased donor. Some wait for years, many die while waiting. However, there is another option receiving a kidney from a living donor. A living kidney donation will last longer and have better function. Some people are afraid about the surgery and what living with one kidney will mean for them. We have some basic information about kidney donation:

    1. You only need one kidney to live a healthy long life.

    2. Most donor surgery is done laparoscopically, meaning through tiny incisions.

    3. The recuperation period is usually fairly quick, generally two weeks.

    4. The cost of your evaluation and surgery will be covered by Tony’s insurance. The hospital can give you extensive information on this

    .5. You will have a seperate team of healthcare professionals to evaluate you as a living donor.     bAYONNE ‘S 3RD wARD cHRISTMAS tREE lIGHTING fRIDAY, dECEMBER 4, 2020

    On Friday, Decemeber 4th, the Bayonne uptown tree lighting took place with a moment of silence and candle lighting for Bayonne’s 3rd Ward Councilman Gary La Pelusa deceased wife, Cherie.

    Councilman La Pelusa’s children helped with the countdown and lighting. The event was live streamed to Facebook.

    Councilman La Pelusa expressed his thanks to the following : UEZ coordinator Dee Dee Bottino and her husband Mark; UEZ Supervisor Matt Portenti, UEZ asst Supervisor Joe Terrano and their crew.     Mayor Fulop Announces $10M to Transform Toxic Superfund Site into Brand New Waterfront Park for Jersey City Community

    Over 500 Trees being Planted to Memorialize each Resident Who Died During COVID and Wasn’t Permitted a Proper Funeral Due to COVID Restrictions; Each Name will be part of a Memorial Wall at the Park

    The design includes a pedestrian bridge to connect various sections of the park, a pollinator garden framing views to the Hackensack River, a waterfront walkway, as well as a grove of 502 trees. Each tree will represent a Jersey City resident who lost their life to the COVID-19 pandemic and were unable to receive the appropriate funeral services due to the safety protocols in place at the height of the contagion.
