July 2, 1911 was an extremely hot day across the Eastern and Midwestern US. The New York Times reported that on July 2 inÂ New York City it was:

Â . . . the hottest day here in twelve years. Mercury up to 94.5, with 72 per cent. humidity, and next to no breeze.

The paper also reported that:

HARRISBURG, Penn, July 2â€”The temperature today reached 98.2, the hottest recorded since July 1, 1901, when 100 was the maximum. The intense heat caused much sickness.

Department of Health and Senior Services Recommends Health Precautions Due to Today’s Excessive Heat

(Trenton)Â With the heat index soaring to 110 degrees today,

Â the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) urges the elderly,

disabled and those with chronic medical conditions to drink plenty

of water and visit senior or cooling centers if they do not have air

conditioning.

“These are dangerous weather conditions that can cause heat

strokeÂ Â and exacerbate chronic medical conditions, leading to

severe complications and death,” said Acting Commissioner

Dr. Tina Tan.

Â The risk of severe illness and death from extreme heat

exposure is highestÂ Â among:

Â·Â Â Â Â Older adults, especially those 65 years of age and older

â€¢ Adults of all ages with chronic health conditions, especially those with

asthma, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity or psychiatric

disorders

Â Â Residents may locate their nearest cooling center by calling their local

senior center, town hall or by calling NJ EASE at 1-877-222-3737.Â

People may also visit the DHSS website for the locations of the

nearest senior center (web.doh.state.nj.us/apps2/seniorcenter/scsearch.aspx)

or Area Agency on Aging (www.nj.gov/health/senior/sa_aaa.shtml).

The company headed by PJ Leonard, just completed “The Fallen Faithful” which starred Sonny Marinelli as Moran Douglas. “Fragmented Commitments” is based on a story by PJ Leonard and written by Brandy Mead.

Hudson County Community College to Host College-Wide Open House

July 18, 2011, Jersey City, NJ â€“ Hudson County Community College invites prospective students to become better acquainted with the College at its Open House on Thursday, August 4, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Open House will be held at the Collegeâ€™s Culinary Arts Institute/Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City, just two blocks from the Journal Square PATH Station.Â Â In addition to information about HCCCâ€™s course offerings and degree and certificate programs, members of the College staff will be available to acquaint attendees with the financial aid and student support services HCCC provides.

Hudson County Community College offers courses during sunrise (early morning), day and evening hours, online and on weekends. Fall classes will begin on Wednesday, August 31.

The Films of Frank Sinatra
Frank Sinatra was one of the biggest show business stars of the 20th century. In addition to his phenomenal success and influence as a recording artist, he was also a prolific star in movies and television. In August and September, Museum of the Moving Image and the Paley Center for Media will join forces to celebrate Sinatraâ€™s legacy as a performer on the big screen and on television. From the 1940s to the 1980s, he made more than 60 films. After his early success for MGM in a number of lightweight musicals, he lobbied for the substantial dramatic role of Maggio in From Here to Eternity, and won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. He then showed his range in a surprising variety of rolesâ€”in comedies, melodramas, gangster films, action moviesâ€”revealing surprising depth and ambition as an actor.
