Applications Being Accepted for Foundation Scholarships at Hudson County Community College

  JERSEY CITY, N.J. / February 23, 2012 — The Hudson County Community College Foundation has numerous scholarships available for the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters.

 The HCCC Foundation is now accepting scholarship applications from students who are enrolled in the current academic year and new students who have completed the College’s admission application and assessment process. Applications are available in both English and Spanish through the HCCC Foundation Office ((201) 360-4006) and online at http://www.hccc.edu/FoundationScholarship/. The submission deadline is June 1.

 Student applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria for an HCCC Foundation scholarship: Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States and living in Hudson County; applicants may not receive more than one HCCC Foundation scholarship; applicants must submit a financial aid form (FAFSA) and supporting materials; scholarships are for tuition purposes only and may not be applied towards books, fees or outstanding balances from previous semesters.

 The Hudson County Community College Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit corporation providing tax-exempt status to contributors. The organization, which was founded in 1997, is dedicated to generating financial support for the College and its students, developing needs-based and merit scholarships, and providing seed money for innovative faculty development programs, and for the College’s physical expansion.

Actress and playwright Kim Russell was an adult when she finally got to know her mother, who died when Russell was just 2 months old.
Her father, Bernard Knighten, never spoke of his first wife, Luana.
“He never shared stories, never said I looked like her, unless prompted to by my aunts,” says Russell, author of Tuskegee Love Letters (www.tuskegeeloveletters.com).
Eventually, though, he shared with her some letters he and Luana exchanged as young newlyweds during World War II. Bernard had been a Tuskegee Airman, one of the first 15 pilots in the pioneering all-African American flying squadron based in Tuskegee, Ala. Before its creation in 1941, blacks were not allowed to fly in the military.
Bernard was 23. In letters to Luana and his mother-in-law, he’s cocky, funny and clearly smitten with his beautiful wife. Luana, 21, was a bright and educated stenotypist from St. Louis, discovering a completely foreign way of life in the Deep South.

HOBOKEN’S MONROE CENTER PRESENTS OPEN STUDIO DAY SUNDAY FEBRUARY 26th

The Monroe Center Open Studio Day is back Sunday, Feb. 26 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

During the quarterly event, the Monroe Center for the Arts’ tenants – artists, artisans, photographers, vendors, musicians and more – open their doors to other creative souls and art lovers in Hoboken and its surrounding areas.

On Sunday, 60 artists and vendors housed in vacant studios on all five floors of the center will be participating.

Highlights: – 720 Creation Station, the first Monroe Center artists’ village. Artists include Ivan Petrovski, Vincent Zambrano, Kris Dulfer, Andrea Kroenig, Monique Sarfity and Jordan DeLiso.

CITY OF BAYONNE TO HOST FIRST ANNUAL ART SHOW AT BAYONNE MUSEUM

JURIED EXHIBITON OPEN TO BAYONNE ARTISTS

Mayor Mark A. Smith is pleased to announce that the City will host its First Annual Citywide Art Show at the Bayonne Community Museum located at 229 Broadway. The opening reception will be on Friday, April 13, 2012, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. The show will be open to viewers on weekdays, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. from Monday, April 16, through Friday, April 27, 2012.

 All artists who are residents of Bayonne are invited to submit images of their work for consideration to be included in the show. A jury of Bayonne residents headed by Anthony Sienkiewicz, painting instructor at the 4th Street Senior Center Art Club, will judge the entries and choose the works to be exhibited.

“I am very excited about this inaugural show. Bayonne Planning Board Approves Eastern Millwork Expansion on 7th Street

Last week, the Bayonne Planning Board voted for Eastern Millwork’s proposal for the renovation and expansion of the Ideal Window Manufacturing plant at 151-173 West 7th Street.  Eastern Millwork envisions replacing Ideal at the site, and employing sixty people at the West 7th Street location, which will serve as both a headquarters and an operational facility.  Mayor Mark A. Smith said, “I would like to thank Eastern Millwork for its decision to locate its headquarters and operations in Bayonne.  The Planning Board’s approval of this proposal will bring new manufacturing jobs and generate more economic activity in Bayonne.  I welcome Eastern Millwork’s renovation and expansion of this 7th Street plant.”

Eastern Millwork engineers, manufactures, and installs architectural wood millwork for construction projects in New Jersey and New York.  Under the plans approved, Eastern Millwork would take over the existing plant from Ideal and expand it in two phases.  The existing plant has 40,039 square feet.  In Phase I of its expansion, Eastern Millwork plans to renovate the building and make three additions to the current structure.  There will be two additions to the first floor and a partial second floor addition in the first phase. In Phase II, Eastern Millwork will make a two-story addition to the business.  The two phases of expansion combined will increase the plant’s total area to 57,246 square feet.

Eastern Millwork will relocate to Bayonne from its current location on Chapel Avenue in Jersey City.  Ideal will consolidate its operations at its other Bayonne locations.

Inside the Lisbon Restaurant in Downtown Jersey City

The Paulus Hook section of Jersey City located downtown near Exchange Place is a mix of old and new brownstones and hi-rises, small and big businesses, and restaurants and bars tucked inside the nooks and crannies of this beautiful neighborhood. One charming and cozy bistro is the Lisbon Bar & Restaurant on York Street, a tiny gem of a restaurant that serves traditional Portuguese cuisine to its neighborhood clientele and regulars who have been dining at Lisbon since it first opened around the corner on Warren Street 20 years ago.

When the lease ran out on their space on Warren Street a few years ago, the Lisbon re-opened its doors around the corner on York. That seems to be the only big change, says Joe Cunha, Lisbon’s manager. The menu has pretty much stayed the same, traditional and modern Portuguese and Spanish cuisine featuring seafood, meat, poultry and pasta dishes using fresh ingredients and flavored with the spices of Portugal and Spain. Mayor Healy of Jersey City to Give 2012 State of the City Address

 

Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy will give his 2012 State of the City Address at 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2012 in City Hall Council Chambers, 280 Grove Street.

The public is invited to attend the speech, during which Mayor Healy will discuss his administration’s efforts to keep taxes stable, reduce crime and improve the quality of life for residents. The Mayor will discuss last year’s accomplishments and announce plans for the year ahead.

Super Bowl Sunday did not disappoint this year as Big Blue did Jersey proud. For Gang Green fans, there’s always next year. Speaking of gangs, I want to tell you the story of a very different gang of men, the criminal kind, that roamed the streets of Jersey City in the 1800s.

While New York had its infamous gangs like those depicted in the memorable film, Gangs of New York, its neighbor was no different.  In the 19th century, Jersey City was home to many gangs who claimed specific streets and neighborhoods as their turf. These hoodlums instilled fear in residents and business owners, committing robbery, burglary, assault, extortion and even murder. Those they victimized were afraid to testify against them, making it difficult for law enforcement to arrest and incarcerate them. One of the worst of these Jersey City gangs was the Lava Beds, also known as the Featherstone gang, which operated in what was then the Sixth Ward, a poor immigrant neighborhood.
