Healy, the Municipal Council, the Department of Health and Human Services/Division of Cultural Affairs and the Jersey City 9/11 Memorial Committee  observed  the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks with the annual 9/11 Memorial Service “Reflections.”The Memorial Service took place a t the foot of Grand Street on the Jersey City Waterfront.

On September 11, 2001, Jersey City lost 37 residents in the devastating terrorist attacks. After the towers fell across the Hudson River, the Jersey City waterfront became a staging ground for recovery and relief efforts. Today, the 9/11 monument stands directly across the river from where the World Trade Center towers once stood and where the new tower, One World Trade Center, has risen. The names of the 37 residents of Jersey City are etched on the monument as a memorial for future generations to remember with respect and honor. “It was a tragic day in which the whole world stood still and offered prayers and condolences to the people of the United States of America,” said Mayor Healy. “Every year, Americans across the country stand united with remarkable spirit, compassion, and patriotism. We continue to salute the many brave men and women who protect our lives and our liberties abroad and at home.” The Mayor noted that contingents of Jersey City firefighters, police officers, doctors, nurses and medical technicians were among the first responders to Ground Zero. Local Theater-Attic Ensemble- The Dining Room

September 14-23, 2012,

The Attic Ensemble, Theater for a New Jersey City, presents the first production of its forty second season: a production of The Dining Room byA.R. Gurney, directed by Wanda Maragni.

The Story: The Dining Room is a play set in a single dining room. This is a real dining room, by the way, not just a room attached to the kitchen where the table is set up. This is the sort of room in which a long wood table is accompanied by a matching hutch, buffet, and beautifully carved chairs. It’s the type of room in which manners are of the utmost importance and the rules of behavior are as uncompromising as the crystal of the water glasses. In some ways, the dining room table and chairs become a character in this play. It is the only fixture that remains constant from scene to scene. While the play is written for six actors–three men and three women–there are 57 different characters who perform 17 scenes throughout the course of a “day.”

The cast features of six features Jean Brookner, Ben Holmes, Katie Lawson, Will Nagy, Jessica Nelson and Ross Pivec Continue reading Local Theater-Attic Ensemble- The Dining Room

River View Observer Celebrity Interview- Hitting High Notes with Jay Black

Legendary Singer to Perform at St. Peter’s Pac in Jersey City.

By Sally Deering

In the 1960s, Jay and the Americans’ hits “Only in America” “Come a Little Bit Closer” and “Cara Mia” topped the record charts and on Sat, Sept. 15, lead singer Jay Black will headline – along with Darlene Love – at the new Saint Peter’s PAC in Jersey City.

Now in his 70s, Black works with a different set of musicians (for legal reasons he can’t use the name ‘Jay and the Americans’ – sanctioned by the IRS over unpaid taxes) and he sings his hits at venues like The NYCB Theater at Westbury, formerly the Westbury Music Fair. Black still packs the house and even though the girls who saw him perform on The Ed Sullivan Show back in the day are now grandmothers, they still scream and shout when they hear him sing.

With a career that spans more than 50 years, Black does it his way. He doesn’t rehearse or warm-up before a show, just hits the deck running when the curtain opens. On a recent Friday afternoon, Black gave an impromptu interview with Riverview Observer to talk about his show biz career and performing at the new Saint Peter’s PAC.      Continue reading River View Observer Celebrity Interview- Hitting High Notes with Jay Black

BAYONNE-The Broadway Shopping District – Shopping, Dining, & Fun

Starting this past July 1st, the Bayonne Urban Enterprise Zone Board has assumed the management of the Bayonne Special Improvement District (Bayonne SID), which extends from 17th to 30th Streets on Broadway. This change in management occurred as part of Mayor Mark A. Smith’s effort to make government more efficient and accountable. By moving the management of the Bayonne SID to the UEZ Board, more of the tax monies that are assessed on the businesses in the district will be spent on efforts to improve the district as opposed to office expenses and overhead. Mayor Smith recognizes the importance of a thriving downtown shopping district and is committed to working towards the goal of making Broadway a destination for families to shop and dine.

The district already has a nine-hole miniature golf course that has recently been upgraded. With special thanks to Lauren Dellabella, a successful farmer’s market has been added to the district every Tuesday from 2pm to 7pm until the end of October. The farmer’s market continues to grow and attracts over 600 people each Tuesday.
