Jersey City OEM Calls for Evacuation Shelters Activated, Schools Closed Parking Suspended for Hurricane Sandy

JERSEY CITY – Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy, in conjunction the Office of Emergency Management, has issued a mandatory evacuation of residents for 7 a.m. Monday morning for designated flood zones and low-lying regions due to the anticipated severe flooding associated with Hurricane Sandy.

 Residents in traditional flood zones and low lying areas of the city are urged to relocate to higher ground and or shelter with family and friends as soon as possible prior to the mandatory evacuation Monday morning,  Healy said.  Accordingly, emergency shelters across the city will be open by 8 p.m. (Sunday night) to residents of flood zones who had not already relocated with family. THE CITY OF BAYONNE HAS ISSUED THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ABOUT HURRICANE SANDY:

MAYOR MARK A. SMITH HAS DECLARED A STATE OF EMERGENCY IN THE CITY OF BAYONNE, EFFECTIVE AT 6:00 P.M. SUNDAY NIGHT. WE ASK THAT ALL NON-ESSENTIAL VEHICLES STAY OFF THE ROADS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. HIGH WINDS AND HEAVY RAINS ARE EXPECTED. THE CITY OF BAYONNE IS ASKING RESIDENTS TO AVOID PARKING IN AREAS THAT HAVE FLOODED IN THE PAST. WE SUGGEST THAT RESIDENTS IN FLOOD-PRONE AREAS MOVE THEIR VEHICLES TO PUBLIC SCHOOL PARKING LOTS. ALL PUBLIC SCHOOL PARKING LOTS WILL BE OPEN FOR PUBLIC PARKING DURING THE EMERGENCY, BEGINNING AT 6:00 P.M. SUNDAY. Jersey City OEM Announces Emergency Preparedness Plans for Hurricane Sandy

– Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy, in conjunction the Office of Emergency Management , announced today that city officials have been meeting and are closely monitoring Hurricane Sandy , which has the potential to impact the entire East Coast beginning early Monday into Halloween.

Current forecasts from the National Weather Service indicate Hurricane Sandy, which will likely return to tropical storm status as it makes its way north, could bring more than 5 inches of rain wind gusts from 50 to 70 mph to our area. Hudson County Community College Celebrates Kick-Off of Second Phase of Construction of New Learning Resource Center & Academic Building

JERSEY CITY, N.J. / October 26, 2012 — On Tuesday, Oct. 23, Hudson County Community College (HCCC) hosted a ceremony marking the beginning of the second phase of construction of its new Learning Resource Center & Academic Building Ground was broken for the new Learning Resources Center & Academic Building in November of 2011, and since then the site has been excavated and the foundation constructed.

Halloween Pet Parade in Newport, Jersey City

 Canis Minor, a premier dog and cat boutique, invites pet owners and pet lovers alike to kick off Halloween in Jersey City’s Newport with the area’s 7th annual Pet Parade. Dress your furry best friend in the most creative costume you can dream up and get your camera ready for one of the can’t miss events of the season.

There will be treats for both humans and pets to enjoy and a costume parade through Newport that’s wilder than the animal kingdom itself. Best-in-show and runner-up costumes will be selected and honored with exciting prizes.

The pet parade is open to all and FREE to enter or attend. In addition, 10% of sales that day at Canis Minor will be donated to Jersey City’s Liberty Humane Society.
