Three Is the Magic Number for JC Library Renovation

By Ricardo Kaulessar

The Main Library of the Jersey City Free Public Library was first built in 1899 and it opened in 1901. That makes this grand building on Jersey Avenue in downtown Jersey City historic yet antiquated.

The powers-that-be for the library are moving forward with raising $3 million to finance, in part, a much-needed three-part renovation of the building located in downtown Jersey City to bring it into the 21st century as well as allow it to retain much of its early 20th century charm. The renovation was in the spotlight at the “Wine, Renovations and Song” fundraiser held in the main branch on June 24.

The event offered a platform for

JC PUBLIC LIBRARY
Jersey City Public Library
Main branch
the architect overseeing the renovation Helena Ruman, and members of the library’s board and its foundation to impress upon distinguished guests the importance of the renovation project and of opening their wallets for a good cause. WORLD PREMIERE OF THE JERSEY DEVIL HITS JERSEY CITY

Comedy film presented by the Jersey City International Television and Film Festival.

Jersey Devil Jersey City, NJ – The Jersey City International Television and Film Festival, Humanity Pride Productions, Green Light Films and Diamond Jesus Productions have announced that the World Premiere of the comedy film The Jersey Devil will be Wednesday, September 24th at the Loews Landmark in Jersey City. For tickets, please visit: http://thejerseydevil.brownpapertickets.com/

With the support of the Film Office of Jersey City and the Mayor’s Office, The Jersey Devil was shot throughout Jersey City earlier in 2014. One of the filming locations used was the Landmark Loews, which opened in 1929. This legendary theater continues to hold events today and will bring this Hollywood-style premiere to Journal Square, almost 85 years to the day of its opening. In keeping with Mayor Fulop’s vision of making Jersey City a “mecca” for film production, the creators of The Jersey Devil also utilized diverse neighborhoods throughout the city, including the Brightside Tavern in the Paulus Hook neighborhood, New Jersey City University in Greenville and City Hall. In addition to using NJCU as a location in the film, students attending NJCU were also involved in various aspects of the production. The cast and crew dined throughout the shoot on delicious food supplied entirely by Jersey City food vendors and many Jersey City residents from the surrounding location communities were used as extras in the film. Conceived by Jersey City resident Liz Morrill, North River Sing will be directed by Meg Zervoulis,, currently resident music director and arranger at Paper Mill Playhouse.” The name “North River Sing” derives from an old nautical moniker for the part of the Hudson River that lies between New York City and New Jersey.
