Jersey City, NJ (2/17/2016) —Liberty Humane Society reports that 93 animals were adopted during its first adoption promotion of 2016 between February 1 and February 14. Of those, 54 adult cats were adopted and 19 adult dogs.  One of the cats to find a home during the promotion had been in residence at the shelter for 340 days.  The cat, Barry, came from a hoarding situation in Bayonne in early 2015 along with 52 other cats. He was the last from the group still left at the shelter. Another cat, a tortoiseshell named Pumpkin, had been waiting to find a home for over 600 days.
Irene Borngraeber, Executive Director of LHS, says: “Thanks to the support of our community 93 local animals—the vast majority adult dogs and cats—are now celebrating adoption in loving homes. We are so grateful to our adopters who recognize that each and every pet is deserving of a family. Your actions help us save countless more lives throughout the year.â€
Still in residence at the shelter are Braveheart and Faithful, the two dogs that survived the blizzard and a gunshot together in Liberty State Park in late January. A week and a half after having surgery to seal the wound, Braveheart returned to the shelter and was reunited with his companion. LHS is still looking for someone to adopt both dogs. Borngraeber says: “Braveheart and Faithful have made it this far by remaining together. In honor of everything these two brothers have been through and our commitment to seeing them adopted into one home, we will continue to waive Braveheart and Faithful’s adoption fees.â€
Braveheart and Faithful are approximately 60 pounds and 2 years old. They are housebroken, understand basic obedience commands, and are learning tricks.
