All Saints Catholic Academy takes the win over the undefeated Nicholas Oresko Jaguars at the Bayonne City Grammar School Championship on Tuesday night in front of a packed house at Bayonne High School.
Dionna Lenardo lead the scoring for All Saints with 8 points, along with Gabby Ogbin scoring 6, to help All Saints, No.2 in the City , earn a 20-19 victory against Oresko No. 1 .
According to John Ricard League Coordinator both the All Saints Panthers and Nicholas Oresko Jaguars have been in the championship for the past 5 years and the Championship has always gone to Bayonne. “The rivalry of these two teams has made for some wonderful basketball.”
The first quarter started with Gabby Ogbin and Stephanie Peters giving All Saints an early lead followed by Nicholas Oresko’s Katie Boyle and Sophia Polycheck to take the lead for Oresko. Alyssa Reynold scored on a fast break in the second quarter to keep it close.
The half time score stood at 7-6, with Nicholas Oresko in the lead. Lenardo comes back in the game to score two quick baskets with Gabby Pellicio, getting one from the foul line at the beginning of the third quarter, allowing All Saints to take back the lead.
In the fourth quarter, Nicholas Oresko tied the score at 17-17 when Jesse Semeniak scored 2 and Katie Boyle hit a 3 point shot with two minutes left to tie it. Then Dionna Lenardo went to the foul line and made two key free throws; followed by Ogbin who made one. The Panthers never looked back.
Scoring for the All Saint’s Panthers were Dionna Lenardo with 8 points, Gabby Ogbin with 6 points, Alyssa Reynolds with 2 points, Stephanie Peters with 2 points and Gabby Pellicio with 2 points.
Katie Boyle led the Nicholas Oresko Jaguars with 10 points, followed by Sofia Polishchuk with 7 points and Jesse Semeniak with 2 points.
