Ice Theater of New York Hits the Ice in Jersey City: Star-Studded Performance at Newport Skates

A special presentation at Newport Skates by Ice Theater New YorkOn Monday, 1/19 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), Newport Skates will be hosting an exclusive figure skating performance by world-renowned skaters including Jessica Huot and Christian Erwin. At 3:30 pm Jessica Huot, six-time Finnish National Ice Dance champion, and Christian Erwin, three-time USA Nationals competitor, will perform a specially choreographed duet to “Feeling Good” by Michael Bublé.  The duo will also perform alongside a group of figure skating champions from Ice Theatre of New York.

First grader from Jersey City Public School #17 wins statewide grand prize in New Jersey Agricultural Society poster contest

Learning Through Gardening The New Jersey Agricultural Society recently announced that Varsha Gireesh, a student at Jersey City Public School #17, won the statewide grand prize for first grade in the annual Farm-City Week Poster Contest.

This year’s theme for the poster contest was “Eat A Rainbow.” The students were asked to show why it is important to “eat a rainbow” of different-colored fruits and vegetables for their different vitamins and nutrients. They were also asked to show how they could “eat a rainbow” of fruits and vegetables in one week. Bayonne New Jersey’s First Female Firefighter in 108 Year Fire Department History

Cailin Brodel, has become Bayonne, New Jersey’s first female fire figher in the Fire Departments 108 year History.

Firefighter Brodel was on hand today at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of Bayonne New Jersey’s first new firehouse in over 40 years a 3.5 million dollar state of the art firehouse which will service and protect the Bayonne community for years to come.

Bayonne Bridge Update  

Bayonne  Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has advised the City of Bayonne concerning the latest developments in the Bayonne Bridge construction project.

The assembly of the gantry is 90% complete.  This gantry will carry the pre-cast roadway slabs to the new piers.  The piers are the columns that will hold up the roadway.  The crane height will start at 120 feet and then grow to 300 feet once it gets closer to the Kill Van Kull.  The gantry base is at 6th Street and travels the entire length of the bridge.  Sometime this fall, another crane will be in service working on the south end of Bayonne near 1st Street.

Bayonne’s “Feet to the Street” September 21st Event Aims to Keep Bayonne Clean

Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis’ performance as well as of his city council slate in the June 10 election were described by some political pundits as achieving a “clean sweep.”

On September 21, Davis and other city residents plan to do it for real.

Bayonne’s Feet To The Street Clean-up Event, sponsored by Davis and City Hall, will begin at City Hall Park (26th Street and Avenue C) at 9 am and will finish up at Gorman Field (1st Street and Humphrey Avenue) with a celebratory picnic with music and games. Jersey City Home to New Community Chorus North Jersey Residents Invited to Celebrate the Great American Songbook

Beginning this fall, Jersey City will feature a new community chorus, “North River Sing,” the first chorus in New Jersey dedicated to American musical theatre. Conceived by Jersey City resident Liz Morrill, North River Sing will be directed by Meg Zervoulis,, currently resident music director and arranger at Paper Mill Playhouse.” The name “North River Sing” derives from an old nautical moniker for the part of the Hudson River that lies between New York City and New Jersey.

Area Street Closures Take Effect Tuesday, August 19th

JERSEY CITY – Mayor Steven M. Fulop and the Municipal Council announced today that street closures as part of the plan to convert a portion of Newark Avenue into a pedestrian plaza to enhance the City’s vibrant downtown commercial and cultural district will go into effect next week.

Beginning Tuesday, August 19, 2014, Newark Avenue from Grove Street to Barrow Street and Erie Street from Newark Avenue to Bay Street will be closed from 3 p.m. to midnight, Monday through Friday and between 12 a.m. and midnight, Saturday and Sunday for the preservation of the public’s safety and welfare at the newly created pedestrian plaza. Senator Bob Menendez announces Federal grant to the Bayonne Fire Department:

Newly elected Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis accepts check 

Davis menendez fema River View Observer  U.S. Senator Robert Menendez visited the Bayonne Fire Department to announce a federal grant in the amount of $295,000.  The funding will enable the Fire Department to purchase new turnout gear and to handle high-angle rescues at tall buildings and industrial sites.  Mayor Jimmy Davis and Fire Chief Gregory Rogers joined Senator Menendez for the check presentation.

Officer Melvin Santiago on Friday offered a somber pause, a reflective respite from a very tense week for law enforcement and the public at large.

The 23-year-old was laid to rest at St. Aloysius Church on West Side Avenue, mourned by grieving family and friends, his fellow officers, and elected officials. Also, hundreds of officers from locations as far away as Philadelphia lined the street outside when his casket was brought into the church.
