POTHOLE HOTLINE ESTABLISHED FOR BAYONNE

Pothole hotline established for Bayonne A Pothole Hotline has been established for Bayonne,  Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that Bayonne residents and business owners are encouraged to report potholes to the City’s Department of Public Works (DPW). Residents can call the potholes in to the Department of Public Works at 201- 858- 6070.  Potholes may also be reported via e-mail at publicworks@baynj.org. Messages should contain a specific location for each pothole reported. All potholes reported by the public will be addressed within forty-eight hours, weather permitting.

            Mayor Davis has directed the DPW to dedicate crews to address the citywide problem of potholes. During 2016, Public Works employees filled 2,444 potholes around Bayonne.  Potholes develop each year as a result of the stresses that changing weather causes in street surfaces.

            “I would like to thank our residents and local business owners for their help in identifying the locations of potholes.  By working together, we can improve the quality of our streets,” Mayor Davis concluded.

Bayonne Library Switching to Free, Open-Source Software

Recycling and Garbage collection bayonneMayor Jimmy Davis announced that the Bayonne Public Library is switching to open-source software, effective March 1.  Open-source software is free. The server will be hosted free of charge by Jersey Connect, which is provided by the New Jersey State Library.  Hardware maintenance and back-ups will also be the responsibility of the State Library. Mayor Davis said, “This is a major step forward for the library.  I would like to thank Library Director Sneh Bains for preparing the library for the technology of the future.”

                The new software license means the Bayonne Public Library and other participating institutional users will have the freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change, and improve the software.

                ByWater Solutions has facilitated the library’s migration to the Integrated Library System, which is called “Koha.” That word means “gift” in Maori, the native language of New Zealand.  Koha is used by libraries around the world. After five years, the library will not be paying any license fee to any company.  Up till now, the library has been paying thousands of dollars each year in license fees. In the future, the library will own its data, and data will also be shared with other participating libraries. 

Financial aid from the State of New Jersey has been covering the $15,000 cost of migrating the library’s data.

Ward C Address Focuses on Revitalizing Journal Square and Moving the Neighborhood Toward Becoming the Most Important Arts Community in New Jersey

JERSEY CITY – Mayor Steven M. Fulop will continue the series of 2017 State of the City Addresses today in Ward C, taking the message directly to the residents to emphasize the important role each community and individual plays in the progress Jersey City is making. A total of six speeches, one in each ward, will be delivered over the course of the next several weeks.

Monday’s speech will highlight the development occurring in the Journal Square neighborhood with the focus on arts and culture, including:

 

●      Announcing new RFP with the Friends of Loew’s for the Loew’s Theater management and renovations to be released this Spring

 

●      New museum in Journal Square to open in the Pathside Building; Purchase of land from County underway

 

●      Revisiting zoning changes for both Journal Square 2060 and the Journal Square Arts District

 

●      Finalize plans for the Apple Tree House re-opening

 

While the speech will address results citywide, new development and social service outreach to the homeless community in Journal Square will also be major focuses for Ward C in the upcoming year.

“We have seen incredible growth begin to occur within this neighborhood, and our hope is that Journal Square will once again become the economic heart of our city,” said Mayor Fulop. “Through investing in arts and culture, improving neighborhood infrastructure, and collaborating with community groups, we are making incredible progress in building a dynamic and inclusive Journal Square.”

The State of the City Addresses will take place at 6:30 p.m. on each of the following dates:

●      Ward D, Thursday, March 2, Christa McAuliffe School P.S. 28, 167 Hancock Avenue

Bridges Art Gallery Expressive Creative Soul Art Exhibition Celebrating Black History Month

Bridges Art Gallery in Bayonne, New Jersey recently held an Art Exhibition at the Bayonne Museum entitled Expressive Creative Soul. The event was held over a 3-day period and featured many black artists from the Bayonne and Jersey City area.

New Jersey Turnpike 14A Interchange Construction Updates

New Jersey Turnpike 14A Interchange Construction updates.The following work is scheduled over the next three weeks:

14A constuction project

Toll Plaza

  • East side (entering 14A): renovation of existing Toll Utility Building continues.
  • Reconstruction of Toll Lanes 8-10 continues.
  • A new traffic pattern was implemented at the Toll Plaza on 2/10/17. Please CLICK HERE for graphic.

Ramps between the Toll Plaza and the Hudson County Extension (HCE)

  • Widening construction on the ramps to and from the westbound and eastbound HCE is complete to the extent possible and the final alignment has been implemented. Asphalt resurfacing of the ramps will be performed in 2017.
  • Local street level work at Garfield, Avenue C and JFK Boulevard bridges will resume in the Spring of 2017. This work will be supported by Jersey City and Bayonne Police as needed.

Avenue E / Proposed Roundabout

  • Continue new roadway construction on Avenue E near 53rd Street. 
  • Continue deep bridge foundation construction in dedicated work zones. This work will be supported by Bayonne Police as needed.
  • On 03/08/17, a daytime detour of northbound Avenue E will be used, 10:00AM to 2:00PM. During this period, northbound Avenue E traffic, between 50th Street and 51st Street, will be diverted to Broadway to accommodate bridge structural steel erection. The expected duration of the detour is four (4) hours.  This work will be supported by Bayonne Police.

Connector Bridge (Bridge from the Toll Plaza to Port Jersey Boulevard)

  • Traffic was shifted onto the new Connector Bridge in a two-way temporary traffic pattern. Please CLICK HERE for graphic.
  • Pedestrian usage of the bridge for access to and from Port Jersey Boulevard continues to be prohibited. Please CLICK HERE for shuttle bus pamphlet.

Route 440 and Pulaski Street Intersection / Jughandle

  • Ramp roadway construction continues.
  • Continue new bridge pier construction for the new structure to southbound Route 440.

Ramp Area East of Route 440

  • New ramp construction continues.
  • Retaining wall construction continues.
  • Bridge deck construction on the bridge structure over Pulaski Street continues.
  • During the evenings of 03/09 and 03/10/17, nighttime detours of northbound Route 440 will be required immediately north of Pulaski Street, 8:00PM to 4:00AM, for bridge structural steel erection. Work will be supported by Bayonne and Jersey City PD.

Provident Banks Go Red Women Fundraising Campaign

Employees of Provident Bank recently took part in a Go Red for Women fundraising campaign at the bank’s administrative office and branch locations throughout New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania to benefit the American Heart Association. 

Employees were encouraged to show their support for the campaign and raise awareness of women’s heart disease by wearing red and making a contribution to the American Heart Association.  Employees who supported the campaign were able to wear jeans to work for the day.

 Provident Bank employees raised more than $3,600, all of which was donated to the American Heart Association.

Downtown Jersey City, on the corner where Jersey and Newark Avenues meet, Galleria Hudson frame shop just got a little more interesting. John and MaryJean Frohling and MaryJean’s son Henry Greenfield took over Galleria Hudson just a few months ago and made some changes. Along with framing services, and large-format photo-printing, Galleria Hudson now offers local artists a venue to show their work.

Art Matters February is Black History Month, and the Frohlings and Greenfield are spotlighting local photographer Mickey Mathis, a Jersey City resident who can be seen, camera in hand, strolling through local neighborhoods capturing light as it spills onto buildings, and freeze-framing moments in time. Mathis has been chronicling Jersey City’s neighborhoods for more than 20 years. He made his mark as a New York photographer taking pictures of celebrities and big events like the Ali-Frasier fight. INVESTIGATION BEGINS DOWNED PIPER PA-28 PLANE BAYONNE NEW JERSEY

Small plane crashes on Avenue E BayonneThe Piper PA-28 singe-engine plane that  crashed on Sunday, February 19th, 2017 on Bayonne’s Avenue E is now being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The many parts of the downed plane that spread over the 2 block area between 40th and 42nd street in Bayonne  have been collected for examination and the investigation has begun on what caused the single -engine plane to crash.

The pilot Geroge Pettaway 56, of Wheatley Heights, Long Island recuperating in  Jersey City’s Medical Center is scheduled to be released on Wednesday, February 22nd.

The crash occurred after Pettaway began experiencing problems with the plane near the Statue of Liberty and had hoped to land the small plane in New Jersey then crashing  on Avenue E.

Pettaway’s plane landed upside down not before hitting power lines, and damaging four cars.

Bayonne Medical Center BAYONNE, NJ – CarePoint Health invites area residents to a free Diabetes  program offered for those with type 1 or type 2 diabetes on Thursday, April 6 at CarePoint Health at Bayonne Medical Center. There will not be a program in March.

The CarePoint diabetes program is comprised of monthly seminars to help attendees manage their diabetes. Meetings are usually held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. the first Thursday of each month at Bayonne Medical Center, 29th Street and Avenue E. Dinner is included.
