This week’s Top 10 homes spotlight at www.toptenrealestatedeals.com/ includes a beautiful old Victorian on Staten Island that some people say is haunted. Balthasar Kreischer owned a brick factory on Staten Island in the 1800s. He built two large identical mansions for his sons, Edward and Charles, but Edward later committed suicide and both the family business and one of the mansions burned down. In 2005, the surviving mansion was the site of a mafia killing ground where then-caretaker, Joseph (Joe Black) Young, was charged with the slaying of Robert McKelvey and sawing the body into pieces before throwing them into the furnace. Some say you can still hear Edward’s widow weeping in this mansion along with scratching sounds in a spot where children were punished, and a man and a woman ghost slamming doors. The home has been completely restored.

More Mitt Romney home news with details leaking about his La Jolla, California beachfront home scheduled to undergo an expensive renovation after the 2012 presidential election. The news that is getting a lot of late-night TV jokes is that Mitt’s new garage includes a car elevator, or as his campaign people described it to the New York Times: “a mechanism for storing cars in tight spaces.” The existing structure will be replaced by a new 11,062sf estate which will include a 3,600sf finished basement.

Hudson County Genealogical Society’s “Meet the Greatest Generation” event Secaucus Library April 14

It is universally agreed that 1939 was the greatest year in the history of the American Cinema. The year saw the release of a number of movies which are today considered true Classics.

The Academy Award Ceremony for 1939 was held on February 29, 1940 and was hosted by Bob Hope. The nominees for Best Picture were:

The event will feature a talk, “Counting Heads – The History of the Census and How to Use it to Unlock Your Family History”; live 1940 Music preformed by Mark Wright; free “Census Cake” and coffee; and access to the media center with fourteen workstations where they will show you tips to find your 1940 families.

Admission is Free but space for the media center session is limited. Advance registration is suggested if you would like to take part in the media center research portion of the program.

Construction Progresses, Employment Available at Bayonne Off-Track Wagering Facility

New Meadowlands Racetrack LLC’s (NMRLLC) first off-track wagering (OTW) facility, Winners, is on target for a July opening in Bayonne. The 25,000 square-foot venue will boast two large simulcast viewing areas, a VIP room, and a 40-seat bar. The venue is expected to operate generally seven days a week from 11:00 a.m. until the end of racing and sports. McLoone’s will operate a custom-designed restaurant that emphasizes race and sports-viewing capabilities. With more than 150 television screens, plenty of on-site parking, and outdoor smoking lounges, the facility aims to please racing enthusiasts and sports fans alike. Covenant House NJ recently launched Jersey City outreach program

Asking the Public to Learn About its Services and How You Can Help!

Many children in Jersey City are brought up in communities ruled by gangs, violence and drugs. These kids fall victim to street life, mainly because they aren’t given the opportunity to explore their dreams and see what else is out there. Covenant House New Jersey (CHNJ) recently launched an innovative program to help change these patterns and bring hope to the lives of Jersey City teens.
From September 2009 through March 2010, an exploratory study of Jersey City was conducted by CHNJ to identify the challenges faced by the homeless and at-risk youth in this city. The goals of the study were to determine if there was a need for Covenant House services in Jersey City and to examine level of services provided to youth up through the age of 21. The findings showed that there weren’t any agencies in the city that conducted street and community outreach with the purpose of connecting at-risk youth to stable housing and critical support services.

In 2011 CHNJ started its Jersey City outreach program with grant funding from the W.E. Simon Foundation. This grant allowed Covenant House to hire outreach workers, purchase a vehicle and secure office space on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Jersey City. The outreach employees work tirelessly to infiltrate Jersey City’s poverty stricken communities, develop trusting relationships with the citizens and help prevent youth from turning to gangs, prostitution and crime to survive. Covenant House’s Jersey City outreach is a unique program; there aren’t any other non-profit organizations or services that infiltrate the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods on a daily basis. It makes it easier to monitor activity and it could bump you up to a higher interest rate. All-Saints Catholic Academy Bayonne to Host Annual Gala Honoring Notable Bayonne Residents

 Bayonne, NJ – All Saints Catholic Academy will host its’ annual dinner gala on March 31st honoring notable Bayonne residents Matthew Dorans, Cynthia Macon, Dr. Ellen O’Connor, Sr. Joan Sullivan and John J. Gillespie. The event will benefit the students of Bayonne’s only Catholic grammar school.

 “We are very excited this year to be honoring a fine group of people who truly demonstrate a commitment to our community and advancing Catholic education”, says Fr. Paul Schetelick, parochial vicar of All Saints.

 Matthew Dorans is the past president and current 2nd vice-president of the Bayonne Chamber of Commerce, as well as the current vice-president of In-Line Air-Conditioning.

 

 

 

Cynthia Macon is the president of the Altar Society of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the director of fraternalism for the Royal Arcanum Fraternal Benefit Society, an international volunteer organization.

 

 

 

 

Hellen O'connorDr. Ellen O’Connor recently retired after dedicating her career to childhood literacy. She is the former Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction at the Bayonne Board of Education.

 

 

Sr. Joan Sullivan is an adjunct ESL instructor at Passaic County Community College. She previously served as the Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Newark.

 

 

 

 

John J. Gillespie was a special agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration of the U.S. Department of Justice for 31 years until 2003. He then went on to work for Pamrapo Savings and Loan in Bayonne until 2010.

 The dinner gala will take place at Mayfair Farms in West Orange, NJ. Cocktail hour begins at 7pm followed by dinner at 8pm. Guests can expect an evening of fine dining, dancing, networking and fun.
