COVID-19 UPDATE 5/23/2020

Mayor Davis has directed OEM to keep residents informed on all the latest information related to this health emergency.

Mayor Davis has informed us a 64yr old female Bayonne resident passed away due to Coronavirus-related illness.  This passing marks the 69th since the beginning of the health emergency.  Mayor Davis expresses his deepest sympathy, on behalf of all Bayonne, to the family of the deceased.

Bayonne Residents CURRENTLY Positive – 723*

  • The number above reflects only the Bayonne residents that are CURRENTLY COVID-19 Positive.  We have 300 Bayonne residents that are considered recovered.  Recovered patients, according to the CDC, no longer have to isolate or be reported.   

TESTING:  The Bayonne Medical Center continues to perform testing for COVID-19 at Veterans Stadium each weekday.  Your physician can make you an appointment for this testing.  Rite-Aid at 1097 Broadway is also performing COVID-19 testing.  This testing is free and is open to anyone (regardless if you have symptoms or not).  Go to riteaid.com to make an appointment.  CityMD is doing Antibody testing.

RECYCLING:  Alternating Recycling will continue this coming week beginning on 5/25.  On your normal recycle pick up day, please put out only CARDBOARD/PAPER this week.  This will be last week of alternating recycling, as we return to normal pickups on the week of June 1st.

PARKING REGULATIONS: ALL parking regulations that have been suspended for the last two months, will come back this week.  Summonses will be issued for meters, pay lots on Tuesday 5/26/20. UPDATE: RESIDENTIAL ZONE PARKING WILL NOT BE ENFORCED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

GOVERNOR DIRECTIVES: There have been many updates to the Governor’s directives, as they relate to the RE-OPENING of New Jersey.  ALL non-essential businesses are reopened (with restrictions), as well as numerous other changes.  Please go to covid19.nj.gov for full information.

bAYONNE COVID-19 UPDATE 5/22/2020

Mayor Davis has directed OEM to keep residents informed on all the latest information related to this health emergency.

Mayor Davis has informed us that two more Bayonne residents have passed away due to Coronavirus-related illness.  A 78yr old male and a 50yr old female passed away, bringing our total to 68 fatalities.  Mayor Davis expresses his deepest sympathy, on behalf of all Bayonne, to the families of these two neighbors.

Bayonne Residents CURRENTLY Positive – 719*

  • The number above reflects only the Bayonne residents that are CURRENTLY COVID-19 Positive.  We have 298 Bayonne residents that are considered recovered.  Recovered patients, according to the CDC, no longer have to isolate or be reported.   This is another day over day reduction in current positive cases in Bayonne.

Jersey City Begins Implementing Re-Opening Plans To Help Local Businesses Bounce Back

Will Provide Testing for All Employees of Local Businesses; Will Provide PPE Re-Opening Packages once Business is Tested; Will Facilitate Easy Access to Outdoor Seating for Restaurants

 Mayor Steven M. Fulop announced today that the city will be taking aggressive steps to help local small businesses prepare to re-open their doors once Governor Murphy lifts restrictions. The plan includes testing for all employees of local businesses, providing each local business a re-opening package that will include PPE and sanitizer once the business is tested, and a process for restaurants to easily expand outdoor seating to offset loss of indoor seating.

“After two months of these businesses being closed, we want to do our part to make sure that local businesses have the ability to re-engage their customers and build trust. We think customers knowing that all the employees have recently tested negative and are equipped with PPEs will allow this to happen. For restaurants specifically, we want to offset any reduction that the Governor may implement with indoor restriction by allowing restaurants to have more seating outdoor,” Mayor Fulop said. 

Over the last few weeks, leadership within the Departments of Public Safety, Health and Human Services, and Housing & Economic Development have been doing large focus group Zoom meetings with local business owners to solicit feedback and better understand the resources they will need. 

In addition to testing and PPE, the city has set an easy to use application for any business looking to expand outdoor seating for their business. 

“This pandemic has challenged everyone in many ways, and business owners have also had the additional burden of trying to survive the pandemic in their business capacity as well,” said Annisia Cialone, Director of HEDC.  â€œThe future of local business will not immediately return to the way it was, so we’re working to help them recover and get to that point.”

The city will provide owners and employees both COVID-19 and Antibody Testing, in addition to a safety kit which will include face coverings, gloves, and sanitizers based on the number of employees at each business. 

“We have been building a reserve of PPE for our employees, but after listening to local businesses say they are having challenges obtaining PPE we feel that using our supply to help local businesses is a good use of our current supply so that these businesses can open quickly,” said Public Safety Director James Shea.

Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes

Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Newark will join thousands of Catholic cemeteries nationwide with the premiere of its annual Memorial Day Program “Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes.”

This year’s Memorial Day Mass will be celebrated by Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, via a video that was pre-recorded at Holy Cross Cemetery (in Mausoleum Chapel II) in North Arlington. The Mass will be available for viewing beginning at 11 a.m. EDT on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, on the Archdiocesan website, www.rcan.org, and the Catholic Cemeteries website www.rcancem.org.

Hoboken announces expanded composting drop-off locations for residents

Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla announced today an expansion of Hoboken’s free residential composting options for residents. As of June 15, the City of Hoboken and Community Compost Company will offer residential compost drop off to four sites:

  • City Hall, 94 Washington Street (near patio behind City Hall on Bloomfield Street between Newark and First Streets)
  • Church Square Park, 400 Garden Street (near restrooms in the center of the park)
  • Elysian Park, 1100 Hudson Street (near restrooms on the north side of the park)
  • 7th & Jackson Plaza (near Portland Loo restroom on 7th Street between Monroe and Jackson Streets)

CARDINAL JOSEPH TOBIN TO CELEBRATE SUNDAY NOON MASS VIA LIVESTREAM IN OBSERVANCE OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD

On Sunday, May 24, at noon, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, will celebrate Mass in observance of the Ascension of the Lord via livestream from the Lady Chapel in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. Parishioners are encouraged to join via livestream by going to www.rcan.org/parishsupport. Local parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Newark are also livestreaming Mass, and a full guide can be found at www.rcan.org/parish-mass-livestreams-and-more.

Although the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days has been suspended, there is an understandable urgency to livestream liturgies for the faithful. To ease the pastoral work of livestreaming during this difficult time, Cardinal Tobin has transferred the observance of the Ascension of the Lord from Thursday, May 21, to Sunday, May 24, 2020. Hudson County Community College Reboots to prepare for students staying close to home

College builds upon students’ benefits by establishing the ‘Return to Campus’ Task Force, and planning for students and teachers to thrive in a safe and healthy educational environment.

Hudson County Community College (HCCC) President Dr. Chris Reber understands everyone’s concerns for today and the future. “The COVID-19 pandemic has left us all with uncertainty about aspects of our everyday life, and what we will encounter in the days, months and years ahead,” he said.

However, he states that the one thing COVID-19 has underscored is the value of education, especially a college education. “With the re-engineering of the American economy there will be new challenges and opportunities, and we intend to prepare students for those new realities,” Dr. Reber said.

Mayor Davis has informed us that two more Bayonne residents have passed away due to Coronavirus-related illness.  The two men, ages 66 and 68 are our 65th and 66th deaths since the pandemic started.  Mayor Davis expresses his deepest sympathy, on behalf of all Bayonne, to the families of these two men.
