“In a culture obsessed with the new, the efficient, and the flawless, what we discard is often deemed to have lost its value. What if the overlooked holds possibilities we have forgotten how to see? Robert Bohn has an answer to this question in his new body of work, Urban Decay.

This exhibition explores abandonment and discovery, where discarded materials shed their former identities and take on new life. His work embraces imperfection and he uses his intuition, to challenge our need to define, and control.

“At a time when so much of our experience is manufactured, this practice becomes an act of resistance. It asks us to look beyond an object’s purpose and rediscover the unpredictable power of imagination,” says Gallery Director, Andrea McKenna.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

As urban renewal strips neighborhoods of their character and culture in favor of sterile, “smart” living, we find ourselves increasingly shaped by a world that seeks to eliminate imperfection. AIdriven systems promise efficiency, while social media feeds us an endless stream of predictable entertainment. Imagination becomes unnecessary, and convenience transforms choice into an expectation. This is our decay. Through surrealist methods of automatism, and an observational practice of pareidolia, I extract subconscious visions, characters, narratives, and environments from discarded materials. I am drawn to the forms, histories, and possibilities embedded within objects that have been discarded or overlooked. My work seeks to reveal the character and memory held within these objects, uncovering what might otherwise remain unseen. By reimagining their fragments, I give new life from what has been discarded, allowing the forgotten to become a vessel for imagination, transformation, and renewed meaning. – Robert Bohn ABOUT THE ARTIST
