For National Library Week (April 11-17):Jersey City Free Public Library Conducts Postcard Campaign to Save NJ Libraries!

Have you visited a library recently?  170,000 people use NJ libraries every day. New Bill A-2555  could eliminate certain programs and cause Libraries in NJ to close.

Read how you can help keep them open.

library-logo-jc  JERSEY CITY, NJ  April 8, 2010 – With a postcard geared to the NJ State Assembly, residents and library supporters in Jersey City can make their voices heard regarding the Draconian cuts proposed for the New Jersey State Library, and learn how local funding for all public libraries may be eliminated forever. Postcards are available now at the Main Library, 10 branches and the Bookmobile. The postcard reads: The Governor’s proposed budget cuts library funding by 74%.  This cut: ELIMINATES Internet access and electronic journals in hundreds of libraries ELIMINATES the delivery of materials from other libraries to you – more than 3 million items in 2009  ELIMINATES 50% of State Aid to public libraries  Loss of these programs will put more pressure on local property taxes. Proposed legislation A2555 will ELIMINATE minimum funding for libraries and will result in fewer books, fewer hours and fewer services and will cause some libraries to close.  More than 170,000 people in NJ use libraries every day.  I’m one of them.  Restore $10.4 million in library funding and oppose A2555.    Continue reading For National Library Week (April 11-17):Jersey City Free Public Library Conducts Postcard Campaign to Save NJ Libraries!

Ten East – Hibachi, Fusion and Sushi Bar Lounge

James Bond Cool with a Side of Sexy!

by Sally Deering

ten-east-inside

Tucked away in the back of South Cove Commons, a waterfront mall in Bayonne where fast-food places gratify customers on the run, Ten East – Hibachi, Fusion and Sushi Bar Lounge is an intoxicating oasis at the end of an asphalt parking lot. An exotic restaurant where the cocktails, cuisine and atmosphere are so divinely cool, you can practically picture Secret Agent 007 ordering a Jade martini (vodka and melon-pear juice) shaken, not stirred.

The alluring atmosphere at Ten East whispers James Bond cool as you step inside the sleek and sexy restaurant bathed in red lighting with two stylish dining rooms and the sleek curves of an inviting bar. The lounge serves as the central focal point between the Asian Fusion dining room and the Hibachi dining area where nimble-fingered chefs prepare your meal right at your table juggling cutlery in a dramatic display of culinary “martial arts.”

Ten East is the dream child of brothers Anthony and Patrick Franconeri, who grew up in Bayonne the sons of hard-working parents who ran their own local eatery. The boys, who attended Marist High School, decided they would someday design their own restaurant in Bayonne that would reflect their personal tastes. The result:  a sexy, sultry restaurant and club that serves sophisticated Asian cuisine in a sensual atmosphere and perfect location for appetizing adventures. new-canco-loftsJERSEY CITY, N.J. (March 26, 2010) – Though cabin fever might have been a problem for some during the recent winter storms, Shawn and Mayura Norville, residents at CANCOlofts in Jersey City, N.J., dealt with their need to get out by simply going downstairs, where they could take advantage of CANCO’s wealth of amenities, including a basketball court, billiard room and media center.

And even when they were at home in their two-bedroom condominium, the soaring 14-foot ceilings, 8-foot entry and interior doors, dramatic mushroom-capped columns and abundant light from the 9-foot window walls conveyed a sense of openness and space that helped counteract the winter blues, as well as reminding the Norvilles that they are living in a piece of history. Johnny Maestro Passes Away

johnny-maestroA singing career that has lasted over 5 decades ended last night when Johnny Maestro 71 died from cancer. The lead singer of the Crests had one of the most successful integrated doo wop groups in the 1950s, the Crests waxed the classic ballad “16 Candles” in 1959. Formed in 1956, Johnny Maestro’s (b. May 7, 1939) warm tenor made “16 Candles” a national smash, and pop/R&B hybrids like “The Angels Listened In” and “Step by Step” also did well. Maestro  went solo in 1960, scoring the next year with “Model Girl” on Coed, while the Crests attempted to survive on their own. Maestro  eventually reclaimed stardom as leader of Brooklyn Bridge,, an 11-piece aggregation that hit with “Worst That Could Happen” in 1968. source Bill Dahl, All Music Guide

I knew Johnny Maestro having first met him in 1982 when our singing group the Heartaches opened for him at Richard Nader’s Doo-Wop show at the New Yorks’ Felt Forum. He was very kind to us, a group of unkowns and made us feel very welcomed at such a large venue. Our group went on to play several other venues with Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge througout the 1980s.

In the music world Johnny Maestro will be missed for his talent and friendship.

such notable hits as “The Angels Listened In”  and also he was lead singer of the the Brooklyn Bridge with hits throughout the 1960s with songs “The Worst that Could Happen”
