THE COMEBACK KID-Everything Old is New Again when Neil Sedaka Performs at Bergen PAC in December 12th, 2014

By Sally Deering

River View Observer Color_Neil_2012_Publicity_Shot_#1 (2)“Love Will Keep Us Together”, “Where the Boys Are”, “Breaking Up is Hard to Do” “Laughter in the Rain” – back in the day these songs swept teens off their feet and into the world of Grammy-winning singer/songwriter and international legend, Neil Sedaka.

Accompanying himself at the piano, Sedaka wrote and sang soulful love songs that made teen girls cry and filled teen boys with youthful longing for that special sweetheart. With a voice like buttercream frosting on a 7-layer cake, Sedaka’s sweet vocals keep on going and at 75, Sedaka will be back at the piano crooning his oldies and most recent recordings on Fri, Dec. 12 at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood.

Sedaka will be in the spotlight for one night only to give the audience a chance to hear a master songwriter in an intimate setting. With a look back, Sedaka will sing songs that made him famous and those he wrote that were performed by legends like Elvis, Connie Francis and the Captain and Tennille. During his 50-year career, Sedaka has sold millions of records and penned hundreds of tunes with lyricists Howard Greenfield and Phil Cody.

On Sat, Oct. 18th, from 10 am to 4 pm, New Jersey City University (NJCU) and the Hudson County History Advocates team up for an all-day birthday bash to celebrate New Jersey’s 350th (1664-2014) with displays from over 50 Hudson County organizations and cultural groups, documentary films by local filmmakers, talks by authors who penned books about New Jersey’s Who’s Who and ‘Who Was’, vintage photos and postcards, antique appraisals (just like “Antiques Roadshow” on PBS) and a treasure hunt and goody bags for kids. To Bean or Not to Bean

  By Sally Deering

To the chili-lover, there’s nothing tastier than a bowl of kidney beans, onions, and peppers simmering in a bath of spicy tomato sauce. Add in beef, pork or other meats and they may soon wax poetic on the art of a good bowl of chili.

Last year, more than 1,000 chili-lovers descended on Grove Street Plaza in Jersey City to taste a bounty of varieties of the hearty concoction created by local chefs and home-cooks vying for chili titles like Spiciest and Best Vegetarian. On Saturday, May 3rd, the plaza will once again be a hub of hungry chili-lovers salivating for some super chili samplings at the 5th annual 4th Street Arts Chili Cook-off and Fiesta Fundraiser. And while cook-off attendees chow down on some tasty chili, a panel of judges will taste-test and award Golden Spoons (wooden spoons painted gold) Golden Skillets and other prizes in several best chili categories. Early on in his amateur career Muhammad Ali won the title of Golden Gloves Heavyweight Champion of the World with champs like Sugar Ray Leonard, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Floyd Mayweather following in Ali’s footsteps. The Golden Gloves was their training ground, the place where they learned to “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee”.

The Golden Gloves is still training future champs and its franchise, the NJ Golden Gloves continues to provide amateur boxers the opportunity to shine in the ring and take home the title. This year, Jersey City became the first city to host all NJ Golden Gloves tournaments on its turf, and the tournaments, which began on Saturday, March 1 will be held every Saturday at Dickinson and Ferris High Schools and Elementary Schools No. 7 and 17. The location for the championship bout on April 12 is still to be decided.

“With a brand new boxing program and a progressive agenda to promote health and fitness, we couldn’t think of a better partner for the Golden Gloves than Jersey City,” Dan Doyle, President of the NJ Golden Gloves says.  “With its great location and many outstanding amenities for visitors, Jersey City is the perfect place to host the tournament. Golden Gloves boxing has found a home in Jersey City, which has a rich history in boxing.”
