The Films of Frank Sinatra
Frank Sinatra was one of the biggest show business stars of the 20th century. In addition to his phenomenal success and influence as a recording artist, he was also a prolific star in movies and television. In August and September, Museum of the Moving Image and the Paley Center for Media will join forces to celebrate Sinatra’s legacy as a performer on the big screen and on television. From the 1940s to the 1980s, he made more than 60 films. After his early success for MGM in a number of lightweight musicals, he lobbied for the substantial dramatic role of Maggio in From Here to Eternity, and won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. He then showed his range in a surprising variety of roles—in comedies, melodramas, gangster films, action movies—revealing surprising depth and ambition as an actor. In September, The Paley Center for Media will present a number of television specials, focusing on Sinatra’s collaboration with the Count Basie Band. For more information, visit paleycenter.org.

Everybody’s Irish on St. Paddy’s Day
 By Sally Deering
Â
Saint Patrick’s Day is a celebration of Ireland’s rich culture, a nod to its heritage and a deep reverence for an Irish missionary who loved his country and became Ireland’s Patron Saint in the 7th Century. Fast forward 14 centuries to 2011. Parade and party revelers are preparing for March 17th, shopping for shamrock-speckled ties, pointy Leprechaun hats and green lipstick while bars everywhere are stocking brewskies for those who regard St. Paddy’s Day as the perfect excuse to get hammered, plastered, clobbered, blotto, juiced, loaded and obliterated. You don’t have to be Irish to get jiggy at your local watering hole; everybody’s Irish on St. Paddy’s Day.
Â
But is that the only way to celebrate the Emerald Isle?
Â
Not here in Hudson. Towns like Hoboken, Jersey City and Bayonne which mirror New York City on New Jersey’s waterfront join the Big Apple and other cities with celebratory parades, corned beef and cabbage dinners and other ‘green’ events in honor of Ireland’s beloved St. Patrick and the country that brought James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett, Sean O’Casey, WB Yates, Spencer Tracy, Liam Neeson, Maureen O’Hara and the Celtic Women, into our lives.  Continue reading Hudson County Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with Parades and Parties

Arthur’s Tavern Serves Delmonico Steaks with Old Hoboken Charm
by Sally Deering
In a town where almost every doorway on Washington Street leads to an eatery, Arthur’s Tavern on the corner of 3rd Street stands out as a Hoboken treasure – a throwback to the way the town looked back in the day with prices that are more than reasonable (a Delmonico hamburger for $5.95) and steaks and sides as yummy and comforting as your favorite dish on grandma’s table.
Â
The tables decked out in red-checkered tablecloths first catch your attention as soon as you walk in the door. Then you notice the stained-glass lamps hanging from the hammered-tin ceiling. Add to that the mouth-watering aroma of sizzling Delmonico steaks and you immediately relax a little, ready to settle in for some hearty and delicious fare. Hudson County residents only have to take a 20 minute subway ride and arrive in the greatest city in the world- New York. According to Newser a new restaurant is going to open who’s main theme is Pop Tarts. Pop Tarts World, Yes, those very same treats we all enjoy for breakfast and ran home to have after school.
But this restaurant will have some variations: serving 30 kinds - like Ants on the Log for one, a combination made up of celery, peanut butter, and chunks of, whatelse, Pop-Tarts and according to Newser Pop-Tarts sushi—three kinds of tarts minced and wrapped in a fruit roll-up.
Can’t get enough of the Pop Tarts theme this restaurant will also have a six-story billboard above the store, light Shows, Pop Tart merchandise.
When I heard that Dennis Hopper had died, my first thought was, “We won’t see his likes again.”
Much has been written about Dennis (meet him for five minutes and he insists on first names), but what hasn’t been said is how genuine and kind he was.
It was early 2004 and we had met, unexpectedly, at Ago, the trendy restaurant on L.A.’s Melrose Avenue.  The restaurant was crowded, noisy, and vibrating with energy of the celebrities, who were at home in the place owned by a consortium which included Robert DeNiro.
Suddenly, I recognized a familiar voice. I turned and there was Dennis Hopper at the next table, close enough to touch. “Hey Dennis,” I said. “How’s it going?” I had spoken to him at many Hollywood events and he always greeted me as if he remembered every time.
