Hudson County Genealogical Society’s “Meet the Greatest Generation” event Secaucus Library April 14

It is universally agreed that 1939 was the greatest year in the history of the American Cinema. The year saw the release of a number of movies which are today considered true Classics.

The Academy Award Ceremony for 1939 was held on February 29, 1940 and was hosted by Bob Hope. The nominees for Best Picture were:

Bring the name of the winner for Best Picture that evening to the Hudson County Genealogical Society’s “Meet the Greatest Generation” event on April 14 at the Secaucus Public Library at 11 am and win a slice of their famous “Census Cake”.

The event will feature a talk, “Counting Heads – The History of the Census and How to Use it to Unlock Your Family History”; live 1940 Music preformed by Mark Wright; free “Census Cake” and coffee; and access to the media center with fourteen workstations where they will show you tips to find your 1940 families.

Admission is Free but space for the media center session is limited. Advance registration is suggested if you would like to take part in the media center research portion of the program.

Construction Progresses, Employment Available at Bayonne Off-Track Wagering Facility

New Meadowlands Racetrack LLC’s (NMRLLC) first off-track wagering (OTW) facility, Winners, is on target for a July opening in Bayonne. The 25,000 square-foot venue will boast two large simulcast viewing areas, a VIP room, and a 40-seat bar. The venue is expected to operate generally seven days a week from 11:00 a.m. until the end of racing and sports. McLoone’s will operate a custom-designed restaurant that emphasizes race and sports-viewing capabilities. With more than 150 television screens, plenty of on-site parking, and outdoor smoking lounges, the facility aims to please racing enthusiasts and sports fans alike. Healy, members of the Municipal Council, the Department of Health & Human Services/Division of Health are proud to present Jersey City’s Third Annual Pet Owner’s Day Clinics, beginning Sunday, April 22nd, 2012, and running weekends through Saturday, June 16th, 2012. On Sunday, April 1st at The Hudson School in Hoboken, N.J, pianist Pamela Ross and cellist Adrian Daurov take the stage to present, “An April Fool’s Day concert of “pop-sical” music and we’re not kidding!” Ross and Daurov will bring to life the works of Marvin Hamlisch and classical composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Shostakovich. Covenant House NJ recently launched Jersey City outreach program

Asking the Public to Learn About its Services and How You Can Help!

Many children in Jersey City are brought up in communities ruled by gangs, violence and drugs. These kids fall victim to street life, mainly because they aren’t given the opportunity to explore their dreams and see what else is out there. Covenant House New Jersey (CHNJ) recently launched an innovative program to help change these patterns and bring hope to the lives of Jersey City teens.
From September 2009 through March 2010, an exploratory study of Jersey City was conducted by CHNJ to identify the challenges faced by the homeless and at-risk youth in this city. The goals of the study were to determine if there was a need for Covenant House services in Jersey City and to examine level of services provided to youth up through the age of 21. The findings showed that there weren’t any agencies in the city that conducted street and community outreach with the purpose of connecting at-risk youth to stable housing and critical support services.

In 2011 CHNJ started its Jersey City outreach program with grant funding from the W.E. Simon Foundation. This grant allowed Covenant House to hire outreach workers, purchase a vehicle and secure office space on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Jersey City. The outreach employees work tirelessly to infiltrate Jersey City’s poverty stricken communities, develop trusting relationships with the citizens and help prevent youth from turning to gangs, prostitution and crime to survive. Covenant House’s Jersey City outreach is a unique program; there aren’t any other non-profit organizations or services that infiltrate the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods on a daily basis. Palisades Medical Center will offer a Free Seminar on Balance and Vestibular Rehabilitation. 

 The event on April 19 at 7 pm at Palisades’ Auditorium will feature physical therapist Diane Matlick, vestibular rehab specialist, as the guest speaker.  Free transportation is available.

1. Clear the clutter: To reduce the paperwork pileup, sign-up for online statements and bill pay. And if the receipts and paper statements you have in your filing cabinet are more than three years old, you should sort and shred them.

2. Consolidate accounts: Instead of juggling multiple credit card bills and statements from several checking and savings accounts, see which ones can be closed or consolidated. It makes it easier to monitor activity and it could bump you up to a higher interest rate. The Simpson Baber Foundation seeks Hand to Hand participants during Autism Awareness Month.

 April is National Autism Awareness Month. In preparation of this annual event, The Simpson Baber Foundation for the Autistic is reaching out to the business community and asking for participation in its most aggressive fundraising campaign of the year, the Hand to Hand campaign.

 Along with dedicated Hand to Hand sponsors, BCB Bank and the Bayonne Board of Education, participating businesses will be supplied with “Caring Hands Cards” to display your customers’ name when they make a donation to the Simpson Baber Foundation.  Join the growing list of participating businesses committed to making a difference in the lives of those affected by autism.

Not Yo Mama’s Fair Organizers, LLC (NYM) is an event planning company which coordinates craft fairs, based out of Jersey City, NJ. NYM was started in 2009 with the idea of bringing high end crafting into the mainstream and helping develop the business of thousands of artisan crafters. Not Yo Mama’s Fair Organizers, LLC partner with local community and art organizations to set up fairs and ultimately donate a portion of the proceeds to the partnering organization. Not Yo Mama’s Fair vendors create a wide range of handmade goods; jewelry, handcrafted leather, stationary, original artwork, home goods as well as furniture. Currently run by artists Megan Gulick and Michelle Mumoli, NYM has 15 fairs scheduled from April through December of 2012, with as far a reach as Newark and Asbury Park.
