Hudson County Community College Responds to Executive Orders on DACA and Undocumented Students
October 4, 2017, Jersey City, NJ – Hudson County Community College (HCCC) has established clear guidelines as to what it will – and will not do – with regard to the White House’s executive order to rescind the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program instituted under executive order in 2012.
Last week, at a Senate hearing on Capitol Hill, California Senator Kamala Harris questioned Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke about the concern that the personal information of undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children could be turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the agency tasked with removals. Acting Secretary Duke stated that she could not guarantee that the information of young immigrants who applied for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program would not be turned over to immigration and customs authorities.
HCCC President Glen Gabert, Ph.D. said the College wants to reassure students protected under DACA. “At Hudson County Community College, we are dedicated to assisting and caring for all of our students. We will continue to counsel and advocate on behalf of our DACA students,†he said.
Shortly after the executive order was issued, Hudson County Community College issued the following statement to define how the College is responding to executive orders concerning DACA and undocumented students:
Hudson County Community College will provide support on immigration-related concerns.
Hudson County Community College will counsel those impacted with resources for educational and living expenses for which they are legally eligible.
Hudson County Community College will vigorously investigate and prosecute anyone who threatens, intimidates or harasses any member of our community.
Hudson County Community College will intensify its long-standing advocacy for expanded access to higher education for all our students.
Hudson County Community College will not voluntarily disclose immigration and/or citizenship status to federal authorities absent a court-issued subpoena.
Hudson County Community College will not ask questions regarding immigration and/or citizenship status except when relevant to the service being provided.
Hudson County Community College will not voluntarily disclose immigration and/or citizenship status information to federal authorities unless necessary to comply with a federal regulation or to protect a person’s safety.
Dr. Gabert reminded that Hudson County is the most ethnically diverse area of the United States. “Our students represent more than 90 different nationalities and 58% of them speak a language other than English in their homes. More than 50% of our students identify as being of Hispanic heritage (can we get most recent figures for the other students?). Our students are the future of this area and our country. They are industrious, dedicated men and women who are working to create better lives for themselves, their families and our community,†he said.

October 4, 2017, Jersey City, NJ – Hudson County Community College (HCCC) has announced the lineup for its 2017-2018 Lecture Series. The featured lecturers include animatronics engineering expert and former host of Discovery’s MythBusters Grant Imahara; ABC News Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent and co-anchor of This Week Martha Raddatz; and actor and activist BD Wong.
The events will be held the College’s Culinary Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City – just two blocks from the Journal Square Transportation Center. All are open to the general public and there is no charge for admission. Tickets for the events are available on a first-come-first-served basis, and may be obtained by visiting www.hccc.edu/tickets.
The first lecture on Wednesday, November 29 at 11 a.m. will feature Grant Imahara, who was also a model-maker and animatronics engineer at George Lucas’s Industrial Light and Magic. While there, he worked in special effects on eleven feature films – Star Wars: Episodes 1 – 3, Artificial Intelligence: AI, and The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
Martha Raddatz will appear in the second segment of the series on Thursday, March 8 at 6 p.m. Ms. Raddatz has served as ABC News’ chief White House correspondent during the last term of President George W. Bush’s administration, and received Peabody and Emmy awards for her coverage of presidential campaigns and the September 11 attacks.
The final lecture will take place on Thursday, April 5 at 6 p.m. and will feature BD Wong, the award-winning actor who has appeared on Law& Order: SVU, Oz, Mr. Robot, Gotham, Jurassic Park, and Jurassic World. Mr. Wong also appeared in the Broadway production of M. Butterfly, for which he earned a Tony Award, Theatre World
Award, Clarence Derwent Award, and Drama Desk Award.

Port Authority warns of Severe Congestion Issues Gridlock Alert
Holland Tunnel Due to Lane Closures on Route 139
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has issued the following press release:
Motorists strongly urged to use mass transit and consider alternate routes; PATH rail to add extra trains during peak hours on all lines
Drivers who typically commute through the Holland Tunnel are urged to use mass transit –particularly during the morning and evening rush hours — due to fire damage to the nearby Route 139 ramp in Jersey City that is maintained by the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
The extensive structural damage to the ramp has resulted in closures to three of five lanes nearly back to the tunnel, with the 60-percent capacity reduction expected to cause significant delays for westbound traffic in Jersey City and Hoboken. Lower Manhattan also can expect backups on local streets accessing the tunnel entrance to New Jersey, particularly if one of the tunnel’s two westbound lanes must be closed if gridlock occurs on the New Jersey side.
Drivers should use mass transit, consider alternate work hours or telecommute if possible since other crossing like the Lincoln Tunnel may face delays due to the diverted traffic.
The Port Authority and NJ DOT have activated their Offices of Emergency Management to continuously monitor the situation and streamline communications with other state and local officials. Agency officials are working on traffic management plans to lessen potential congestion impacts and will coordinate implementation with counterparts at NJ DOT, NJ Transit, New Jersey State Police, Jersey City, Hoboken and Manhattan, New York City officials, as well as New York Waterways ferry service.
PATH rail is poised to add two extra trains hourly during the morning and evening rush hours on each of its three lines: Newark to World Trade Center, Hoboken to World Trade Center and Journal Square to 33rd Street starting Monday morning.
Travelers to Newark Liberty International Airport are encouraged to use NJ Transit rail service from New York Penn Station to access the Newark AirTrain to the airport’s terminals.
Along with urging drivers to use mass transit options and seeking ways to increase rail, bus and ferry capacity, the Port Authority is taking other significant steps to help its state and local partners alleviate the anticipated problems. Ongoing construction work on the Bayonne Bridge, for example, has been suspended to help ease regional traffic.
“The Port Authority is urging travelers to use mass transit and consider alternate work hours and telecommuting to help minimize the anticipated gridlock at the Holland Tunnel until repairs are made to New Jersey’s nearby Route 139 ramp,’’ said Diannae Ehler, the Port Authority’s Director of Tunnels, Bridges & Terminals. “The agency will assist our transportation partners to help minimize congestion around the tunnel, and we have offered engineering help if needed to evaluate and speed repairs on the state’s ramp.â€
Agency, state and local officials are conferring on opening a third lane before the Monday morning rush along the Holland Tunnel’s westbound exit lanes if feasible, while also adding additional police officers, closing certain side roads and adjusting traffic light patterns to help move traffic more efficiently.
On average, more than 2,600 vehicles per rush hour and 46,000 vehicles daily travel from Manhattan to New Jersey via the Holland Tunnel.
Port Authority Police are currently staffing intersections to optimize and balance traffic flow on both westbound 14th street and the local north/south roadways. This presence will be maintained through the weekend, with needs reassessed for the start of Monday’s weekday travel patterns.
The Port Authority’s Engineering Department has offered the support of staff and its resources to assess the extent of ramp damage and assist with implementation of a repair strategy.

NY Waterway has morning and evening rush-hour service between Port Liberty and Liberty Harbor in Jersey City and Manhattan. Both terminals are accessible from the New Jersey Turnpike and have parking.
Ferry terminals at Paulus Hook and Harborside in Jersey City and the Hoboken Rail/Ferry Terminal all are served but the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail.
