Bayonne Mayor and Port Authority Work Expeditiously to Repair Damaged Sewer Main on 5th Street

Mayor Mark A. Smith announced that contractors working on the Port Authority’s “Raise the Bridge Project” damaged a sewer main on West 5th Street, west of Kennedy Boulevard last week. A Port Authority contractor cut into an active sewer line by accident, because the sewer line was designated as “abandoned” and not in service on their contract plans.

Heavy rains on Thursday evening caused some basements to flood with sewage, due to the inability of the severed sewer main to drain water from the area.

NEW CITY KIDS PRESENTS: CITY SAIL REGATTA 2013

CitySailRegatta2013September 2013 – Jersey City, NJ – Over 15,000 teens in Jersey City live within 5 miles of a world-class sailing community. Few of these teens ever set foot on a boat. In 2013 City Sail provided 28 of these teens with the sailing experience of a lifetime. During the six-week program, each teen received 12 hours of classroom instruction on sailing, 27 hours of on-the-water sailing instruction,and 17 hours of swimming. Beyond the regular programming, City Sail offered fved sailing-related field trips around the state and the top participants in the program went on a three-day trip into Long Island Sound. The entire City Sail experience was free for the 28 teens who participated in 2013, only requiring a commitment from them to attend for the entirety of the six weeks.

On September 17th, the City Sail Regatta will raise  funds for the 2014 City Sail teens through an exciting afternoon event. Local professionals and businesses  will sponsor  nine boats and experienced the joy of City Sail through an afternoon of sailing instruction on the Hudson River, followed by dinner at Liberty House Restaurant. Participants will  sail with teens from City Sail and raced against each other on a beautiful fall afternoon. The event raised over $14,000, sponsoring 14 places for next year’s City Sailors.

City Sail is New Jersey’s only free sailing school, providing at-risk teens with a unique chance to learn to sail, swim, and race sailboats. City Sail was founded in 2005 with a vision for opening the waterways of New Jersey to the kids who live there. Since then, the school has expanded to include 30 teens, 10 volunteer instructors, and partnerships with both Offshore and Halcyon sailing schools. An Evening of Blues at the Monroe Center September 22nd

MusicThe Monroe Center in conjunction with the Jersey Shore Jazz and Blues Foundation will present ‘An Evening Of Blues’ on Sunday, September 22 from 5pm to 8pm. This Blues event will take place on the second floor in The Monroe Center Theater Space at 720 Monroe Street, Hoboken N.J. Blues virtuoso Gary Wright, Roots and Blues  will perform the music of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Mississippi Fred McDowell and many more influential Blues artists. An educational multi media presentation will be screened documenting the history of Blues artists and their influence on popular music.

Blues artists who bring their instruments and wish to jam with the band, will be admitted free.

Parking is free. Tickets: $ 40.00.

ae-sandThe Attic Ensemble, Theater for a New Jersey City, announces auditions for Detective Story by Sidney Kingsley. The play will be directed by Billy Mitchell. Auditions are Monday, September 30 and Wednesday October 2 at 7:30 pm at the Historic Barrow Mansion, 83 Wayne Street, Jersey City. Callbacks will be held on Wednesday October 3rd, if needed.

HARD GROVE CAFÉ IN JERSEY CITY RAISES THE BAR

   Delicious Cuban/Latin Cuisine Ranks High Above the Norm

Jersey City's Hard Grove Cafe  When the Hard Grove Café’s original owner Domenic Santana opened the Jersey City restaurant  on Grove Street in the early 1990s, the neighborhood was not as affluent as it is today and Santana offered locals more of a diner menu where you could get a peanut butter & jelly sandwich for a buck ninety-nine.

Times have changed and the restaurant has changed hands a couple times. In 2005, Evelyn Padin and Carmen Mendiola—two practicing lawyers and Jersey City residents – decided to try their hand at running a restaurant and purchased the Hard Grove Café. They kept on Chef Rafael Valdespino and the trio created a menu of Modern Latin Cuisine that is refined and delicious. Instead of the soupy beans and sticky yellow rice typically found at many local eateries, the Hard Grove Café’s beans are light, the rice is fluffy and both dishes are seasoned gently.

“Carmen is Cuban-American and I’m Puerto Rican and we were looking for something,” Padin says. “When we saw this place, Carmen didn’t want it closing down. Inside Barcade in Jersey City  Barcade is a welcoming Night Spot because it can be a relaxing place if you’re alone, or a pumped up night competing with friends.  If you are going to unwind grab a game machine, a comfy seat, and order up a tasty treat…don’t forget the cash.

The place looks very casual, and the ambiance reflects it.  The wooden bar is the focal point where you can have your drinks, and meet new people, or just hang out with old ones exchanging who has the best scores.

New Jersey Golf Foundation Golf Classic Raises Record Setting $218,000 to Benefit Youth Golf Programming Throughout Garden State

 PISCATAWAY, N.J., September 6, 2013…The New Jersey Golf Foundation (NJGF), the charitable arm of the New Jersey Section, PGA of America (NJPGA), today announced that the 7th Annual New Jersey Golf Foundation Golf Classic, the signature event on the Foundation’s calendar, raised more than $218,000 to support youth golf programming throughout the Garden State. The NJGF Golf Classic, which took place at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield Township, N.J., on Monday, August 5, 2013, hosted nearly 300 participants who came together in support of the Foundation’s breadth of programs. Additionally, Dean T. Criares, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Drew University and a partner at Sound Harbor Partners, was presented with The Chairman’s Award — given annually to an individual who works tirelessly behind the scenes to support the NJGF’s programs and initiatives. BAYONNE Blood Drive and Bone Marrow Registry Drive at 27th Street Bayonne Fire House On Monday, September 9

            Your help is needed!!!

           There will be a blood drive on Monday, September 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the City Hall Fire House, at 27th Street and Avenue C. The drive is co-sponsored by the Bayonne Fire Department and the Bayonne Police Department, and is taking place to respond to the critically low blood supply.  Area blood banks are short of all blood types, so all blood types are welcome in this drive.  Supplies of the following blood types are especially low: O negative, O positive, A negative, and B negative. Health officials  ask prospective blood donors to bring signed or photo identification and to know their Social Security numbers.
